Definitely interested in this contest. If we get a good amount of people joining in, I'll make a sizable contribution to the reward.

I'll be turning in a guide because writing isn't my strongest subject. It'll most likely be my Ice/Lightning Mage Guide.

Are you going to be the only one judging the results?

You might want to PM that instead.

But yes, everything is accepted as long as no forum rules are directly violated.

@Plenty no. There's one other person: A friend of mine, an English literature student, will play a decisive role in the process. And you can argue against our evaluation, if you actually come with good arguments that apply to your case, and influence your final score.

    My poetry piece.
    --

    There Can Only Be One.

I always think about how you feel about me.
I'm probably wrong, it's no surprise.
You're always raving about your knights in rusty armour,
Emerging victorious from their battles to save you.
    Slaying the dragons,
    Dousing flames,
Or simply, serenely clutching you underneath your cotton fort.
It's all flowing through, garnishing my preemptive thoughts of your saviour.

    It's alright though.
You, thinking you're some wretched old witch living in the dark depths of the forest,
Always told me that "love" is something that can be immersed in without your actual presence.
Striving to see that person smile and glow,
Even if you yourself are not really any part of it.
    I've accepted that,
But I still don't know what this thing...this enigmatic entity, Love, quite is.

Your knight, however, seems to be fulfilling his duty.
    Quite well, at that.
    Good for him!
It makes me happy to see you both happy.
(I always laugh when those around me laugh, even if I have no idea what's going on...hahaha, it's great)
He always visits you in your dark cave,
Where you think nobody will find you,
And he surmounts the guardian of your threshold.
While I'm peering through the brush,
    Making sure things go right.
    Because I'm paranoid like that.

After all of your embracing in his arms,
And dousing all the flames of horror around you,
You seem to be in bliss.
    That's good.
A shooting star glosses by, but you're too busy with him to notice.
    Or maybe you did notice.

I'm getting sleepy, and you might be too.
    So might he.
But being the knight he is, he'll probably wait for you to doze off,
Then adore your lovely face as you've faded off into the blackness.
How I wish to witness such a magical sight.
    How luc-

    Crack!
Oh dear, I've stepped on a stick.
    How silly of me.

He's noticed and sets you down carefully.

I sit and wait patiently, as he takes hold of his sword and approaches the brush.
Should I break for it, or wait for his reaction?
Surely he values the protection of his loved one more than a random creature in the brush
That, of course, threatens the safety of the princess.

    He's closer.

I slowly rise to my feet and walk out of the brush,
The canopy's shade couvering my identity.
The moonlight glistening upon his blade.

I stare into his eyes, for he only sees a black figure within the shaded area.
He has determination and a sense of loyalty in his eyes.
Good, I can check that off.

He lifts his sword, holding it firmly with both his hands.

Little does he know, that his loved one's guardian is standing before him.
Perhaps she hasn't accepted it, or even noticed,
    But I'm still there.
    Always...there.
On the sidelines, admiring the beauty and radiance of the fairy,
Being caressed by a seemingly brighter knight.

    His sword is moving downwards...

I wounder if she'll ever notice.

    ...closer...

    It's okay though.
I'm sure she'll be fine without me.

A smile made its way across my face, embracing my cheeks.

    Whoosh.

A sound like a machete moving seamlessly through silk was made in the night.

She shivered mildly in her sleep.

By the way, you should probably explain how scoring works. Or at least tell us what the score spectrum would be like.

Thanks! Is the criteria through which each category is judged on to complicated to post as well?

Just a tad extensive. lol. Most of it is probably obvious; Creativity surely won't be an aspect for guide-writers. :p

Heh, I wrote a "guide." I hope this counts ^_^'

    >>How to Truly Express<<

How to truly express? Express what? You can’t use express on its own.

Well, here’s the thing. As soon as you combine the word express with almost any other word, it suddenly holds meaning; express yourself, express an emotion, express an idea, express delivery. Isn’t it strange that the word express, on its own, seemingly holds no significance?

Ah, notice I use the word seemingly. That’s important.

Expression is a bit abstract, a bit intangible; in its general form, it exists only as a method of communication, a form of exchange. In its general form, expression holds no more weight than, say, the word “bit.” A bit airy, a bit crucial. Like a derivative, it derives its purpose from the words surrounding it, because alone it holds no significance. Unlike a derivative, the whole is not perfectly fine without it; in fact, express holds a very special purpose, devoted to filling a niche unique to the expression of expression—the “power” of expression, if you will.

For example, expression could mean communication. The very concept of conversation revolves around the exchange of ideas, carefully packaged with a handpicked selection of words and delivered through what we call language. This communication reaches new heights as a form of expression when used to communicate an inner turmoil, the gnawing on the back of mind. The epitome of expression is the realization of this inner disturbance present within every human being; the epitome of communication is the ability to eloquently express that inner turmoil. As a famous quote by F. Scott Fitzgerald goes, “Genius is the ability to put into effect what is on your mind.”

Sometimes, the language we choose to converse in fails in its duty to communicate, in which case we default to the language of art. After all, art is merely a product of that inner disturbance, a result of the attempts to cope. You can immediately tell a true piece of art when you ponder how to best dictate why it is you feel drawn to the piece, beyond the first few weak words that cannot in any way do it justice. True art has soul, it has gravity; true art encapsulates an idea to its core, and presents the very essence of its being in a way that transcends the limitations of pure conversation.

In other words, expression is impossible to define, yet universally understood. The language we choose to converse in, whether it be English, watercolor, or interpretative dance, merely constitutes the vessel. In this light, a several hundred page dissertation on social interaction is no more effective in conveying a message about humanity than, say, The Hunger Games.

This leads to a little something called self-expression; the true form of expression.

Expression is the unfiltered, visceral opening into the soul, a door in the otherwise devoid hallway of societal interaction. Expression is a conversation, an ongoing debate between two ethereal entities. Expression is the everyday struggle between a mother’s aggravated scolding and her child’s anguished shrieking. Expression is the terrified anger of the soldiers that don’t know why they have to fight, why they have to suffer gut-wrenching screams of the boys they murder as their mothers watch. Expression is the languid flailing of the Honors student as he stares helplessly at the looming exams.

Expression is, essentially, what makes us human.

//sorry, just had an idea and went with it LOL

No, don't count it as anything. I was just sharing a past conversation I had with a stranger.

    @Insanity Cow
Let's just put that under the term "expository writing"/exposition... :p Or essay, of sorts? But yes, of course, it counts. :) Thanks for your submission.

    EDIT:
I've added something to the last rule:
