GM’s need to stop letting a few people ban anyone they can. When browsing the report abuse section of the forum I noticed that there are a few people with many posts there and yet 90%+ of the community has none. So are these people just hate-magnets randomly being harassed by everyone they come by? Obviously not. These people find an enjoyment out of getting others banned, it makes them feel powerful in a way. That isn’t right and I want it to stop happening.

They’ll catch someone using the n word or the f word and they’ll think “ha, I get to ban this guy now”. They won’t even be offended; they just know that if they report that person, they’ll be banned. Sometimes they even try to start a fight with someone just to try and make that person say the wrong thing. Then they’ll take their ss and happily prance on down to forum so that they can get another reasonable player banned because they decided to interact with one of these ban-baitors (or hate-bait, I like that too).

I think that GMs should require increasingly strong evidence for abuse reports from people who have made multiple ones in the past. Don’t allow these players to continue making weak reports that get people banned just because they think it’s fun. Save bans are for the true abusers.

You do know that all GMs act on the server rules?
Break them and you get banned.

GM's don't need to stop doing anything. It's quite simple. The T&C is agreed upon by every person playing this game when they create their accounts. If someone is violating that rule, and there is evidence they violated the rule, they're going to receive a punishment as deemed appropriate.

I have the best solution to fix this problem: don't use the words that could get you banned. The English language has SO many words that can be used instead of the ones we don't tolerate on this server. Use those all the time and you won't have to worry about being reported by anyone and risk being banned. It's not that difficult to do.

I know but I still don't think its right that some players enjoy getting others banned. If you enjoy being harassed then well you're not really being harassed and I don't think a ban should be given.

Did he or did he not break the ToS isn't the only thing that should be considered imo. Was someone wronged? do they really deserve punishment? are questions that are more important.

If people really feel like they're being baited into getting banned, take a screenshot of the entire conversion or at least as much as you can. Worst case scenario, you both get banned. Best case scenario? GMs will let you handle the situation

The people that get banned don't know to ss because they don't know that a report is coming. The cases that caused me to make this post were very petty reports and understandably weren't foreseen by those who got banned because of them.

If you're using one of those words that are not allowed (and you should know what they are, because you agreed to the ToC) then expect a report to be coming. While the report abuse section makes my eyes bleed every time I look at it, responsibility rests on the players in this case, not the staff.

THANK YOU. While all the people who are getting banned did break the T and C, I think the problem is the kind of people your were talking about take any opportunity they can to get someone banned. Most people can discern real harassment towards them vs. playful shit talking, even though both violate the T&C, if you KNOW the person is kidding around and isn't serious shouldn't get reported because that's just being a dick...
On the other hand if you truly feel you've been harassed by all means report it.

And it's not just harassment vs. playful shit talking. One report I saw was of someone who said n***a. Not as an insult, or even directed at anyone. Something like "Any n***as want to buy some scrolls?". And he got banned because some opportunistic sadist happened to be in the same room.

Honestly no one has the balls to call out the terms and conditions because they're scared of a downvote brigade, but that's the fundamental problem here... people who game online are aware of the possibility of hearing the n-word, and f-word, everyone who interacts with people online are prepared to hear it, and, it's really not a big deal unless you make it a big deal. Obviously the staff of Royals disagree but the argument shouldn't be whether saying the n-word should be allowed or not, it should be: Is it truly the responsibility of the staff to regulate these words, and is it necessary? I don't think so. An average mapler is used to using, or hearing these terms. It doesn't save anyone from persecution by banning everyone who uses these words which in most cultures is commonly used in everyday conversation (n-word). The fact that a small percentage of people take genuine offense to it is something that we should just accept and not try to white knight by disallowing every player from using a word which is simply common in most peoples lives.
And if the staff were to lift the ban of these words, it doesn't mean that they've stopped caring about peoples feelings getting hurt by the words. It just means they've set a limitation on their involvement in regulating our game experience and freedom inside the game.

BassControl, I hope you realize this is a private server. A private server can do whatever the owner of the private server wants. Think of private universities as an example. Just because a state (let's say California because this has been happening recently) says schools (this refers to public state schools) need to lower tuition rates does not mean every single university in California has to lower their tuition. The privately owned companies can do what they please. What follows is determined by the company's consumers.

I totally agree. And I'll add that I have to believe 95%+ of the bans that come from usage of the word are made just because the word isn't allowed, rather than to protect people possibly being abused by the word. If I were to maliciously insult someone without a lot of cursing I'd stand a much better chance at not being banned than if I were to use the n-word even in a playful way.

His argument was that they shouldn't not that they couldn't. Totally different.

I don't think you understood my point. I acknowledge that they can do whatever they want because its their server, they made it, and if the owner feels the n-word should be banned, then it will. But don't you think the opinions of their player base should be heard, and considered? As a university grows students push for reform in different aspects of the college. If the majority dislikes a rule then this is what usually happens, and from the short time playing this server I feel like the general consensus among the players is that the banishment of the n-word and f-word is unnecessary. You agree with me in your last sentence that the company's consumers determine the future. As should we as the players of this server, shape what the rules are based on what the majority wants. Of course, the majority doesn't always win, but I believe it does in this case.

If you get banned for saying something that is a bannable offense, reread the terms and conditions, take the three day punishment, learn from your mistake and avoid that person that reported you. No use in elaborating to this extent.

It's as if you didn't read anything I said. I'm saying the terms and conditions necessarily need change, based on the majority of players objecting to the rules. Obviously, the staff doesn't HAVE to do anything the players suggest, but it's in their best interest. If no one ever objects to rules that they think are unjustified, (banishment of n-word & f-word for example), and just blindly accepts them without question, we would probably live in a dictatorship. I know I'm going a bit broad here, but revising the T & C shouldn't be out of the question.

who's this "majority" you're talking about? just based on this thread it seems only you and @Tigerxxx have expressed your displeasure with the T&Cs.

I have to say that the staff here SHOULD be able to determine the T&Cs and act based on their own discretion and understanding of these T&Cs simply because they are providing us the service of having this private server to play in the first place, and we should be thankful they don't exploit this privilege they have to ban people they merely have a personal issue with, for instance.

you can't (come up with an impeccable set of T&Cs to) please everyone, no one can. and the existing rules seem reasonable to me, without me having to be overly cautious of what I do or how I act as a player in the game. I don't like to involve myself too much in potentially fuelled threads like this, but I just see a lot of unnecessary butthurt here so here's my two cents.

I'm not referring to you specifically. I'm referring to everyone that has this issue. Don't go on a tangent and make this problem seem way bigger than what it is and blowing it out of proportion with colorful analogies.

There's two issues being addressed in this thread, the policy on the n/f words being too strict and the fact that some players enjoy banning others. As to the policy on the n/f words being too strict, at least let us discuss whether or not this is the case. You've said that using the words is against the rules and can get you banned, we know this, we are discussing if that is the way it should be.

No I don't think these are huge problems in need of fixing. But after what I noticed in the forum, and after a person I knew happily told me he got another person banned, I thought about this, thought it wasn't right and decided to make this thread to see what others thought. This is for discussion, and your posts of "These are the rules, follow them" don't address the topic at hand.

Once again, I'm not objecting to the staff being able to determine the rules based on their beliefs, and values of what is right and wrong. I am in no way saying they have an obligation to comply with requests of their players. But the approach you take is a very dangerous one. Essentially, and correct me if I'm wrong, you're saying the players shouldn't have any influence on what the rules are, simply because the staff members are entitled to make their own, since its their server. I disagree and I'll tell you why. When organizations get bigger, and more customers buy their product, or in this case play their server, customers influence a gradual change in business operations, or, terms and conditions.

An analogy I can give is there are many fast food restaurants, just like there are many maplestory private servers, each restaurant has their own terms and conditions and standards they use for their customers, for example, selling BBQ sauce separately for 11 cent even if you buy a burger, which compares to MapleRoyals T and C, for example, their dis-allowance of players use of certain words. The more customers McDonalds gets, the more feedback the staff receives from their customers. In turn, the staff takes this information from their customers and decides on what to implement into their rules and standards. The mindset shouldn't be " Oh, were so lucky to even be given the opportunity to eat here at McDonalds, they don't have to serve us food, so we as customers don't have the right to say what they should and shouldn't do." The mindset should be, in the case of MapleRoyals, " I'm grateful to be able to play this great server and am contempt with disagreeing with the rules, but that shouldn't stop me from opposing the rules, and pushing to change them. Just because the server is free to play doesn't mean all of its members opinions about what the rules should be deemed irrelevant.

Also, the majority I talk about is based on my interaction with other players in the game, in which the majority of them objected to the banishment of the n and f word. I'm low level so the majority of higher level players may in fact agree with the banishment of the n and f word, I don't know. Regardless, our ability as players to try and reform the terms and conditions shouldn't be tossed out the window, especially since the server accepts donations from its players.(YES ITS OPTIONAL BUT THEY STILL ACCEPT THEM)
