About the newly appointed GMs

Could you maybe open a thread in which you explain WHY you picked a certain player to be a GM?

Because I've noticed a lot of players (myself included) who seem to think it's pretty much a popularity contest.

For example: After Sybe got 'promoted' to GM, I told several of my friends 'it's only a matter of time before kaizoku gets GM aswell'.

Not trying to bash the new GMs or anything, I was just wondering if maybe the staff could explain why they pick a certain person, instead of just appointing them without giving the community their reasons.

There is correlation between high level/high popularity players and GM acquisition, but it's more that they have played for a long time, and been active members of the community above and beyond that of other GM applicants. It's really a show of commitment and engagement with the game and the players.

I would guess it's pretty difficult to pick GMs solely based off of their application, if not impossible. I think it comes pretty natural that these players who have been actively involved in the community and the server for a long time are more likely to be suitable for the task.

Exactly. Basing the decision solely on the application is difficult, so I'm curious what else they base it on.

Being actively involved in the community is obviously a good thing, but that applies to a lot of players. What sets the people who are 'hired' apart from the others?

I am not part of the hiring process nor will I pretend to be, however, I have been a GM here for a fairly long time (since before the wipe) and I have seen many many GMs and admins come and go. Sometimes nothing sets the people who are 'hired' apart from people who are not. Sometimes there just aren't enough positions open for the amount of qualified people that apply. Sure, all the things mentioned before will help your case but if three people who have been here a long time, are active in the community, and have a good reputation apply to be a GM but they're only hiring one person then two qualified people will not make it. It sucks, but that's just how life is whether it's a job IRL or a job GMing for a maplestory private server.

Okay so let's hear it from someone who is involved in the hiring process.

We don't need to explain the reasonings for hiring each time we hire somebody. But like Daniel said - It is based on a wide-variety of factors.

You don't need to, no. But I think the community would appreciate it.. It's not like it's a huge effort.

So every time the admins hire somebody they need to explain exactly why they hired said person? Do they also need to give a reason why they didn't hire somebody? If you apply for a job in real life and you didn't get it the employer doesn't call you and tell you why you didn't get it, you just have to assume the more qualified person got the job. The community has no business knowing the reasoning behind the staffs hiring decisions. Yes, I sound harsh but explaining every little decision we make is a waste of time.

You just said those aren't decisions you make.

A waste of time? Typing down a few lines of text every once in a while (it's not like you hire a new GM every other day) would take what, a minute? Two?

Considering how many people I've seen complaining about the recent additions to the staff (not just 'regular' players either), I don't think that would be a waste at all.

And the community has no business knowing the reasoning behind the staff's hiring decisions? That doesn't sound harsh as much as it does condescending.

Frankly, the opinion of the community doesn't matter in this case, so there's no reason the staff should have to explain themselves. Beyond that, I've heard nothing but positive opinions about the new GMs, with the exception of people who have been banned, and from you in this thread.

I don't know. Would you guys rather have the staff to take people they completely trust or GM's they don't know as much that has a chance to abuse powers and cause damage (that can go up to rollbacks)? *looks at a 0.62 server starting with a O*

MapleRoyals is a very big server with a lot of responsibility, and with this you can't (or almost can't) depend on just applications. Yes, applications shows a TINY bit of what the person can, but I can easily write an application (or even copy) but act much different in-game. With this big responsibility its best for the staff to pick people that they are either very close with or are even their IRL friends. With this you can stay best in contact and have a very, very tiny chance of abuse, ever... I am pretty sure MapleRoyals Administrators knows who they pick.. as I've never really heard of staff abuse from Royals, unless I am not lurking enough ;)

This. When a real company is hiring staff members they don't reveal either when someone is hired, nor explain their users why the person got hired. While MapleRoyals reveal the person they hired, they don't explain why they got hired outside of the job they received, which in this case is Game Moderator (I hate call it Master, its stupid).

I am pretty sure that if you've got a problem with a specific staff member that you can PM @John or @Matt about your/their complain.

If you or anyone you know has an issue with any of the recent additions to staff, I urge the players in question to voice their concerns directly with the member of staff they are most comfortable with. The last time I heard someone had a problem with a member of staff, their only opinion when I spoke to them privately was "I don't think GM _______ should have been hired because I just don't like them."
