Tutorial: MapleRoyals on Steam Deck (Fully Working!)

Thank you so much for the time you put in figuring this all out! Got me back into the game after an 8 year hiatus. Modern Maplestory is so... ): and I've always felt like the OG version would play fine on handheld. Here we are . Got to Level 15 with no issues, the community layout for Maple.sh is great for getting you started for sure.

What's not working for you? I just tried again and it's all working, and I had a good grinding session with my steam deck yesterday. This definitely works, but I'd be willing to help with your implementation if you give some details as to what you tried and what issues you're running into.

 

It is really easy to screw up the steps. I honestly spent 1.5 hour setting up due to user error. These were my biggest issues that stopped me from playing at first.
- The quotes matter it has to be ""info""
- Make sure Maplestory is the default location when installing it on the VM
- Make sure your Bottle matches your Maple.sh directory
- If you don't have ProtonGE get the ProtonUp app on the Discover app, download the one needed for this.


If you named your Bottle anything but Maple3 and didn't change the name of Maple3 in the launch directory then the game won't start.



It's worth it. Here is some hardcore gameplay of me standing still at the FM yesterday. that is magnifier tool gameplay tho, sprites are smaller ofc.

I only play with this thing and am willingly to help anyone else get on board.

 

Nevermind, got it to work. I had a typo in the maple.sh file.

 

I cant find my maple.sh folder.. im stuck on the 4th step

 

You make the maple.sh file yourself, and the guide tells you to put it in the main /home/deck/ directory which is accessible via Dolphin file explorer by clicking the "Home" Places shortcut on the Left bar. You can also open the directory in the Dolphin file explorer by opening Konsole and running the command "dolphin ~/" without quotes.

 

Thanks this worked nearly perfect for me. The only problem I have is that I cant figure out how to type in my username and password. The virtual keyboard doesn’t want to work for some reason.

 

For me you have to click with the area where you type the password with the trackpad and then you can pull up with virtual keyboard with steam button and x button together

 

I am new to linux. I followed the steps but when I open the exe outside Steam it shows a blue screen and then crashes. Any idea what I did wrong? I tried to follow all the steps before adding it to Steam. I just wanted to see if it works before trying to add it to the library.

i have the same problem. When launching from the gaming mode i have the spinning steam logo. Any ideas? Did every step as described..

 

For anyone having trouble with this guide. Follow the initial steps - except the add non steam game part.

Instead of choosing random application - click “Browse” and search for the folder containing mapleroyals within the bottles folder. From there - select MapleRoyals.exe - add it. Load up game mode - select MapleRoyals.exe - make sure you choose Proton7-33 in the manage settings, and vola. You should have 0 issues.

No need to change properties or anything at all. Simply browsing for the folder above, and choosing MapleRoyals.exe should be all you need to do.

Initially followed the guide, and ran into so much trouble. Couldn’t open keyboard within game mode, tried desktop mode, wouldn’t register my keys. The change of step above fixed literally everything. Overall good guide, just use my tip if you’re having troubles.

 

When opening MapleRoyals on SteamOS (not linux) my track pad doesnt work and I am stuck on the log in screen but I am able to pull up the virtual keyboard. If i try to type using my finger no letters show. If I try to type using joystick and pressing A button still no letters show.

On the Steam Linux version the trackpad works to move the mouse and i can type in the username by selecting letters with joystick and press A, not clicking with finger. However, I cannot type in my password for some reason. Everytime i click the passwordbox and try typing both ways no letters are being inputted. Dont know of a way by other than maybe looking at buying a keyboard for this steam deck just to log in...

 

Hey had the same issue with keyboard not registering when in game mode. Do you have a screenshot of the ‘manage setting’ where you found 7-33 in steam? Not seeing where it’s at.


First few attempts followed original instructions and haven’t been able to get this part to work out below. It’ll open the vm but not the game. Double checked and confirmed that is the location of the exe. Wondering if I may have missed a step before hand or if there was a typo in original post for the command.

you have to download the proton version from desktop mode, in the App Store download ProtonGE I believe. That application allows you to download variety of versions.

also the hotkey of steam button + x button should bring up keyboard in the mapleroyals login screen.

 

In game mode, launch royals with my steps above. Make sure to edit game controllers in the steam menu while game is launched, and have your trackpads set to mouse inputs.

also make sure to use Proton7-33

Hey y’all, desperately need help as I tried anything, I suppose instructions are a bit unclear:
When I tried running the executable from the Maple3 Bottle, I suppose I select the installer right? I tried both WZ and IMG installers and both didn’t produce the “MapleRoyals” program to come out… also the Bottles UI has changed since the screenshots in the current post. I tried Proton 33 and it didn’t work, maybe an updated reply with the latest working version? Pls and thank you I’ve been struggling with the instructions.

 

How does this compare to installing Windows and Royals on Deck? Performance wise
