Does Power Guard block damage and returns it, or does it only return?

Not only that, does that mean that with Achiles, there is a chance to block 55% of touch damage received?

Adding maxed Shield Mastery, which I know weapon defense is scuffed at, but at a 100% rate, it would block at least 5% (approx.) more damage.

So, if for example, Big Foot hits for 13,000 direct physical damage, a Paladin with said maxed skills, would receive approximately 5,500 damage.

    Short Answer: No.

    Longer Answer:

Edit: Power Guard does reduce damage taken

    @ImVeryJelly

About Shield Mastery and W. or M. Def in general
The function that determines Damage Output is simply of a the form: Damage - Armor
The value of W.Def and M.Def is about 55% of Weap or Magic Defense is substracted from Input Damage.
Both Weapon and Magic Defense is capped at 999

    https://ayumilovemaple.wordpress.com/2009/09/06/maplestory-formula-compilation/

    MAX damage = (MAX before defense) * (1 - 0.01*D) - WDEF*.5
    MIN damage = (MIN before defense) * (1 - 0.01*D) - WDEF*.6

    Example:
You are fully naked except shield
Mob deals on average 10k Damage
You have shield with 100 W.Def

You now take on average 10.000-55=9945 Damage

Maxing Shield Mastery gains you +100% defense on shields, now you have 200 w.def
You now take on Average 10.000-110=9890 Damage

Assuming the thing that most people believe is true
Additional Multiplication stats goes after initial function

With max Achilles you take -15% damage
So now on average you take 9890*(1-0.15)=8406.5 Damage

    If not true

    Damage Taken = (10.000*0.85)-110=8390

Now try again with your own specific values

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am not sure what you are talking about

"....with Achiles, there is a chance to block 55% of touch damage received?"
"...but at a 100% rate, it would block at least...."

Achiles reduces damage taken by 15%, Shield Mastery increases Defense, that's it.

If you are actually talking about Guardian according to the following link it functions the same as Shadow Shifter. Athough in practice has some issues.
    https://royals.ms/forum/threads/issue-with-guardian-skill-for-hero-pally-in-boss.200087/

If hit -> x% chance to not get hit instead. It has nothing to do with how much damage you are taking. Only if you are taking it at all.

    Thanks for the detailed answer.

My initial question arose given the fact that someone else affirmed that Power Guard reduced touch damage taken and redirected a % back at a monster, it redirected 40% of damage taken and blocked 20% damage.

Wasn't sure how weapon defense worked in touch damage taken, so I just added percentages from each skill, I initially thought Guardian blocked a percentage of touch damage taken, but now I've been told it's just a % of blocking 1 instance of touch damage.

So in summary, the only defensive skill that actually is meaningful with a shield is Guardian, and Achilles without a shield.

Refer to this thread simply for premade comparison photos https://royals.ms/forum/threads/power-guard-bugged-on-bosses.178473/.

Powerguard reduced touch damage by 40% for regular mobs and 20% for bosses. TOUCH DAMAGE. (You receive 60% damage, reflect 40% damage up to 10% of mob's hp, or 80% damage and reflect 20% for boss).

Guardian allows you to block/avoid ANY attack (magic, ranged, touch) at 25% with the exception of DOT area attacks like poison mist.

Kheb explained everything else about achilles and shield mastery (useless skill).

i thought shield mastery was meant to double all stats on a shield, including attack. Is that not the case?

unfortunately no, the skill description also states only improvement to the weapon defence of shields.
