Will N*xon declare war?

Not that one. Two months ago, NX unveiled their development plans for a Maplestory Classic server to be released in late 2025. This comes after the success of fanmade classic servers on Maplestory Worlds, answering a longstanding fan request. However it begs the question: will Royals survive it?

Private servers exist by the good graces of NX's otherwise territorial chokehold on their intellectual property. Maple servers have been shut down left and right over the years, including huge ones like Extalia and Arcane. They've practically banned all publicity of private servers through DMCA notices on YouTube and Twitch, and blacklisted servers from Google search results. There was just another wipe of YouTube videos upon deliverance of the announcement, making it pretty evident that they view servers as competition business-wise.

Here's what makes this scary - Jagex were (among) the firsts to initiate this classic server trend with Old School Runescape in 2013. Jagex, a famously creator-friendly company, shut down the largest private server for Runescape, 2006Scape, shortly prior to releasing their own server. Blizzard held the same attitude by shutting down one of the largest private servers to ever exist, Nostalrius, a classic World of Warcraft server, when their classic server had been greenlit.

NX has a far more tyrannical attitude than most of these companies. Not too long ago, they sued former developers under their employ and prompted a police raid on their office, for purported copyright infringement and "using trade secrets they had learned through NX" (not kidding). This blatant abuse of the Korean legal system by the multibillion dollar company shows how little consideration they have towards potential business threats. Ergo, it stands to reason that Royals and other major servers could end up in their crosshairs.

Currently this is all speculative, but as much as we want to be optimistic that NX will keep the peace, it's hard to imagine that the oldhead conservative lawyers who run the show will turn the other cheek. How do we collectively feel about the longevity of private servers in the wake of this announcement?

 

To sum up, Nexon has already tried to shut down this server several times, but due of how is hosted, it wasnt possible for them to succed. Idk if even some of the Ddos atacks could be paid by them. Maybe now that royals will be a direct competence theyll try even harder, but for now, its not certain that they have chances to actually turn royals down.

Now , the only certain danger is how much ppl they can take from our population, and thats directly related of how hard p2w their classic server is gonna be.

 

I won’t lie and say I won’t check it out but base on the info we do have about that official nexon classic server base on the trailer and etc. I saw that they’re using the old world map which is blehk meaning no leafre. And if no leafre, means no fourth job. I also noticed there was no pirates. Just no 4th job, leafre, and no pirates is already enough for me to go no thanks on that game. But i sound like a hater and negative Nancy and it’ll probably do okay or better than ok but royals will be just fine if anything maybe better because the old school noobs are gonna be like where’s 4th job or where pirate blah blah blah and stumble upon royals but who knows? 12th anniversary just came out and irl work is taking my time away from the game

 

Nexons osms will be no doubt a p2w game. They are allocating resources and developers to build it and they will be expecting to make a huge profit out of it, maybe even more then gms.

 

To be honest, the deal breaker that I hear rumors about is that if HP washing will still be a thing or not. Go look at any thread here about HP washing, see how much it costs, then convert it to USD. Then you have lack of moderation regarding kill stealing, let alone exploits regarding packets. I'm not confident at all the game will have longevity, people also forget how unreasonable the grind was back then. Mapleroyals at worse will feel it for maybe 1-3 months max.

Although there is great debate whether mapleroyals is truly the same exp as old MS, in many ways we'll re-experience why we should be glad it isn't.

 

I don't think Nexon can force a shut down of royals - it's not Old school classic MapleStory any more, it's a rebrand/remake of MapleStory, renamed as royals ms

even the source code are tweaked into the new source patch, for example

DMCA would fail against it

 

Oh without a doubt, thats why I say "how hard the p2w is gonna be" cs theres 0%chance of no p2w stuff. Like I told a group of friends recently: "If the "must" items are less than 100 USD a year I might consider try it, if theyre more then they can sck my ·$%6·$%"

P.D. Artale showed that just letting ppl sell nx stuff, with the hughe amount of ppl wanting to play classic MS, you dont need to charge that much to make millions, even more, if they get too greedy from the scratch , that will be their doom
