Is there a specific reason that SMegas are limited to English speakers only? Is it because there aren't moderators fluent in other languages?

I was already aware of the rule before I joined, but didn't think much about it until I saw some messages while playing today. A user SMega'd looking for other Spanish-speaking players, and immediately got jumped on by other users for breaking the rule, even though it was a harmless question.

If English weren't my native language, I imagine I'd really appreciate finding other users like me to chat and party with. But SMega-ing and posting on the forum in anything other than English is prohibited, so I'd have difficulty going about that.

There are rules against racial slurs and general harassment, yet there is discrimination on the basis of language? You can find several English-speaking private MS servers in a matter of seconds, but the same can't be said for say a Spanish or Portuguese server. MapleRoyals is a wonderful Classic MS server from what I've experienced so far, with fair rules, welcoming attitude towards new players, and a fairly large userbase. So it's understandable why folks would play here compared to a smaller server with less to offer. I don't see the harm in SMega-ing to look for certain language-speaking users and then taking the conversation elsewhere afterwards, to whisper/private chatrooms/etc..

Sorry it's a bit of a rant. I have some primarily Spanish-speaking friends, and they've expressed how speaking in English online is generally the only way to expand their following. I doubt this rule is disputable, I'm just curious and want some feedback and explanation for it.

Smegas are not limited to anyone. Everyone is allowed to use a Smega but these are supposed to be written in english so everyone can understand it.
The public speaks english so why use a smega when its not in english?

If someone can't speak english and still wants to use a Smega then he/she should either learn some basics or use the Google Translator.

There is a sub-forum for those that feel more comfortable speaking in another language. I like to think that counts for something(?):

Well the reason for English smegas only is because there's no way of knowing if someone said a racial or derogatory term in another language. So by only allowing English smegas it makes it easier for GMs and everyone else to moderate (obviously). I'm confused though, I'm assuming he was asking if anyone else speaks Spanish in Spanish in the smega, if that's the case then yea he shouldn't have done it, as harmless as it may have been. There's a special place on the forum for people who speak other languages titled "other languages", if he wants to find other Spanish speaking people that's one way he can without getting jumped on by other people. I get what you're saying though, if English wasn't my native language of course I would want to find other people who speak the same language I do, but maybe in the future the person should use a translator? Same goes for everyone else of course.

Aah crap, I didn't notice that sub-board! The official game terms & conditions post has a bit about only posting ban appeals on the forums in English. I'm terribly sorry that I misread that as not being able to generally post anywhere. Feeling really stupid right now!

I thought the GM bit might have much to do with it. Thanks for clearing it up.

As for the translator bit, try popping every bit of text back and forth in a translator and getting broken translations. I've seen some people get really rude and entitled when a less fluent English-speaker messes up their grammar/syntax, auto-translated or not. I know not all users are like this, but it's irritating to see those speakers being made less welcome for it. It's just clear why anyone would be offended by being silenced in their main language or to be told to "learn the basics"??? Really? I'm not even going to begin with that suggestion rofl.

If you don't know what he's talking about.. then you won't be offended..? *If a tree falls in a forest with no one around does it make a sound?*

I didn't know Smegaing in non-English languages wasn't allowed. It really feels like discrimination.
We have a fairly large user base of Spanish and Portuguese speaking folk in this server, so not allowing to try to find other people that speak their language through smegas is plain silly.

I'd be fine with the rules about English-only smegas being relaxed a bit, for the benefit of the large number of Spanish/Portugese-speaking players we have.

Considering we used to have a HUGE BR following and we still enforced this rule then, I don't see why we would relax it now. While I dislike that the rule is there, it is there for a reason. To balance it out they should be given at least one warning in their native tongue by a GM before any action is taken.

So then it's okay for people who speak other languages to say obscenities, racial terms, and derogatory terms since we can't understand them, but it's not okay to say those things in English? By that logic I can go curse people out in Italian since they can't understand me. There are other ways to meet other who speak your language and if you really wanted to reach everyone with a Smega, then get someone who can speak English to do it for you and you should be fine. English smegas only makes it easier to moderate things...
