Why is KSing a bannable offense?

Just wondering, if kind of counters the old ms nostalgic feeling of intense ks wars and blacklisted people, now you just get banned.

In my opinion KS-ing may be a nostalgic factor but is it a good one?
Almost nobody likes getting KS-ed. It's not fun, it's time draining and pointless.

It's a form of harassment. I'm sure in GMS if they had the resources to track and ban it they would have. This server is much smaller so cases like ksing do not flood the gm's as much as it would have on the live game.

I personally enjoyed a good ks war back in the day, it was fun,
but I guess people take this game too seriously to be able to handle it.

I think it's also frustrating for people who don't want a KS war. Quite frankly, if you and your buddies want to do a KS war, be our guest. However, if one decides to report the other, with the defense being "We were doing a KS war" that isn't going to make a difference.

I think your throwing the word harassment around far too easily. If I'm playing an mmo with pvp and go out of my way to kill the same person over and over? If im playing a shooter and go out of my way to kill the same person over and over is that harassment? IMO the very most you can say is it is against the rules. If someone honestly feels intimidated by someone killing the enemies they are trying to kill they need to address their mental health before playing this game.

Ksing was always fun for me, I wasn't normally the person initiating a ks-war but once someone attempted to ks me you can bet I was smiling. Even though I would love to get back to that, it would not work well on this server at this point in time. Balance issues like genesis not really having a cool down + the overabundance of bishops that came as a result would make it unfair to other classes. There is just no way anyone that isn't also a bishop would be able to compete with that in a ks war environment.

If that ever changes though, I would love for mapowner to be removed.

I've played other mmo's where you are forced to quest in zones where other players can attack you. Very annoying, but I was more then happy to deal with it. The players that are pro-ksing are willing to deal with the frustrations that may come their way, in order to have more fun later on. I'm sure most people would be annoyed if they were trying to advance their level 20 while getting ksed by a 120, but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't want ksing in the game

The question is do the majority of players here want to put up with that possibility in order to be able to potentially have fun later?
If I were to take a guess, the majority of royals players would probably say they prefer not being able to ks at all.
But I would also be willing to bet this is not the opinion of the maple community overall, and it is possible you guys are even losing players to servers that allow ksing.
Maybe more then you gain from appealing to the " I dont like ksing" crowd.

The actual numbers on that would probably be annoying to get though, so just speculating.

do you seriously believe this? if you are grinding in a crowded map during the limited play time you have in your day and somebody comes along and starts killing your mob, and you get irritated/harassed you think you need to address your mental health before playing? i'd say it's pretty normal for someone not to want this to happen to them

Harassment as defined by by a legal dictionary: "the act of systematic and/or continued unwanted and annoying actions of one party or a group" KSing is definitely considered irritating/annoying, continuous, and is therefore a form of harassment.

Okay fair. I was going by a different def but it does fit yours.
But if we accept that definition then there are a lot of occurrences in both MS and other games that tend to happen as a result of normal game play that could be considered harassment.
Like for example if another guild smack talks one time about my guild and I retaliate by repeatedly doing anything in my power to disadvantage the other guild's leader. I don't invite him to parties I run, I tell my guild not to deal with him, I attempt to get his guildies to leave his guild, I defame him daily, ect. I keep this up for like 2 weeks and he gets very irritated. That could be considered harassment under you definition. I would consider this normal gameplay.

So If we don't want to ban people who seem to just be participating in normal gameplay, we either need to collectively agree to waive our right to claim harassment when these things occur, or accept that something shouldn't be bannable just because its harassment.

When your applying that definition to a fictional universe in attempt to promote morality it just seems to me like it has a potential to make things less fun rather then more.

Fair enough though it does fit the definition.

    extra:
Damn you guys make me feel like a messed up person trying to defend this. Is it really that abnormal to like when people try to screw me over and retaliating an vice versa within a game? Maybe I'm weird in the head but I just don't want to stop people who would attempt to be mean to me or even harass me in a game from doing so.

As @John so kindly pointed out, intimidation does not necessarily have to be part of harassment. Continued annoyance and irritation, especially when someone has been told to go away, is harassment. For example, when I am walking down the street and I get continuously catcalled and spoken to in a horrendously offensive and inappropriate manner, I would not say that I feel intimidated. Even without threat of violence, I would still say that I'm being harassed, and I think most people would agree with me.

That being said, I also just don't see how ksing someone is fun — it just seems rather mean. Yes, I do remember the ks wars from old-school GMS, but I don't know, was it really that necessary? I felt like people who went back to ks "noobs" were just people who were still salty about being ks'd when they were lower level themselves, therefore just perpetuating this super unhealthy cycle of negativity. It's only funny when you're the one "winning" the KS war. It's not funny to the other person, who maybe just finally found an open map or just finally had some time to play this game. Yes, they can maybe go KS someone weaker than them, but again, that just perpetuates the cycle of resentment.

I really don't think that Royals' no KS rule is costing us as big of a player base as you're claiming.

Granted, this is just my opinion, but don't you think that's a little excessive? In your example, the guild leader didn't even do anything — one of their guild members allegedly smack talked your guild, but you would be going out of your way to make this person (a person you've never met in game or in real life) miserable on a daily basis in the game, likely to the point of driving them away from Royals completely. Even if someone doesn't take the game very seriously in terms of boss runs, etc, would you really want to play a game where you knew someone was going out of their way to make you a social pariah? I know this is just an example (an extreme one, at that), but even if we bring this back to the KS situation, who would want to play a game where they knew every day, logging in, someone would be ksing them, stealing their map, making it impossible for them to train. That seems like a horrible way to treat someone, even if it's "just a game."

Regardless of how people have felt about the lags, maybe about GM decisions, etc., the one thing I've heard time and time again about Royals is how great of a community we're blessed with. Yes, there's some bad apples, but for the most part, one of the strongest things we have going for us is how nice of a community we have — generous, helpful, etc. It would be a shame to see that disappear in the name of preserving a part of nostalgia that in my opinion, at best is annoying and at worst can border on cyber bullying. It's fun to the ones who do it, not to the ones who are victimized.

Edit: Just to clarify, I say this as someone that just leaves when someone starts KSing my map because I honestly just don't care. Yes, I can "defend" myself with genesis but it's whatever, and I don't report it cuz honestly I'm too lazy and it's not worth it to me. So it's not that I'm getting super butt hurt about KSing or anything.

    that's royals for you lmao

Bishops selling leech taking up every channel of every hour of the day at skeles is systematic (due to how the game works), annoying and unwanted.

Godly equips are too expensive for me to afford, to me this is systematic (due to how the game works), annoying and unwanted.

With this definition, you can basically use harassment as a buzzword for just about anything you don't like.

This is going to come down to opinion but no I dont think that is excessive. There are some things I would consider harassment that are worth bannable. If they are spamming insults at you, If they are threatening to harm you outside of game, there are probably more I'm not thinking of but I think these are pretty reasonable. People that will actually cause harm to others shouldn't be on the game.

    BUT.

I don't think having enemies in games is a bad thing. Every great story has an antagonist. Movies,Books, any type of story would not be as interesting without them. Games are more enjoyable with them as well. Having someone try to ks me is a roadblock in the way that makes the journey more exciting. The more effort they are putting in to doing so, the better it will feel when I overcome their efforts.

IMO if they are actually harmful to someones IRL health do away with em.
    Anything below that... naah.

Can we reasonably say that ksing the average person would be harmful enough to their irl health to be worth doing away with em?
If anything its makes the journey more interesting for them, even if in the moment they are annoyed.

The community is the best here of all the private servers. Your complimenting people on the fact they are nice but does it really mean anything when the alternative to being nice is being banned? If the could act the opposite way and not be banned would they still continue being nice? It's a similar situation to a person who believes if he doesn't behave appropriately some god will punish him for all of eternity. Yes on the outside his actions are that of a kindhearted good person, but you will never know if hes doing it for the right reasons. I would rather know what kind of people are amongst me. If someone wants to call me the n-word I would rather him say it right away so I know instead of secretly hating me so he doesn't get banned.

buddy, you're putting way too much thought into this and wasting your time. "legalizing KSing" is pretty far down anyone's list of priorities.

There's a difference between having an enemy in a game and harassing them. I'm sure there are a number of people who dislike a number of others on this server; players who wouldn't take them on boss runs, would leave a party if they found the other in it, would simply log off if forced to spend time in the vicinity of them. There are a number of others who would call them hurtful things, who would go out of their way to make those people miserable. Those are two separate groups of people that we treat in different manners, with the overlap being that both groups intensely dislike another individual who also plays this game.

The reason people get banned for things like KSing (or any other form of harassment) is because no matter how much you might hate someone, that doesn't give you the right to ruin their experience while playing our server. That's what we stand for here, and that's what we try to uphold when we make a decision on a ban. A three day ban for harassment isn't meant to be us punishing you for saying something rude or offensive (maybe trivially so, depending on who you are), it's meant to be us punishing you for not being respectful of the people around you. That's the message here.

To answer the question of the OP; KSing is bannable because it breaks the principle above. While you may remember KS wars fondly from GMS, a lot of us don't; we want to use our map by ourselves, or with the people we've chosen to be there. That being said, nobody is forcing you to report anyone who KSes you. If you are one of the people who enjoy a good old-fashioned KS war, be our guest. Just make sure the one who has map ownership is okay with it, lest you end up being reported yourself.

There are pro's and con's to both sides of the argument,
and you have to keep in mind that the days of the glorious KS War were before the release of 4th job and the ultimate abilities.
As it stands it would cause much aggravation

Since nobody has mentioned it, KSing has always been against Nexon ToS, they just didn't enforce it very strictly.

    Source: http://www.nexon.net/legal/code-of-conduct/

GL legalizing KSing though, it would make the game much more interesting than people constantly ccing waiting for some person to dc for more than 3 minutes then stealing and holding the map to sell the map for 10m.
