It's a very nice feature to be able to buy smega for just 3m mesos. It really makes trading, training, inquiries; almost everything that has to do with communication a lot easier. At the same time, however, it also results in spamming. I'm all up for light jokes and memes, but sometimes it become plain annoying, especially when someone decided they needed extra attention from the online community and started spamming smega 5-10 in a row, either singing or writing nonsense stuff to their buddies (because apparently their buddy chat is broken, somehow). Worse case is when a group of people started spamming these smega! I don't know if they watched too much Fairy Tail or something, but they want to show to the world how "funny" and strong their "friendships" are by spamming "I LOVE YOU [name] LOLOL", "WHISPER [name] FOR FREE WS AND CS", or something similar that has no apparent content but just plain spam. Less than 10 seconds and the entire chat box would be filled with their smega. And no, I am not jelly of their friendships (forever alone sobz). I'm just irritated. ~togglesmegas is a feature that completely get rid of this problem, but at the same time it also block those smega that I might want to pay attention to, such as trades or training related messages. I'm fine if they decided they want to poke fun at their friend with smega prank once in a while, but spamming it like the above is just plain annoying. I think a small cooldown like 2 or 3 minutes per smega usage is highly appropriate. People still can use the smega endlessly; but in a controlled time interval.
I second this idea! The constant smegas are quite annoying. Especially in maps like GS2 and ULU2 where it blocks the bottom of the game. I have turned off smegas and am disappointed that I have to miss out on the useful smegas such as people wanting to buy leech or selling maps, but it just got to be too annoying having the smegas all the time.
While I agree that they are annoying, I would rather them use their time to more useful stuff. Minimize your chat if it's blocking your map. People were punished for making idiotic "useless smegas" in the previous private server that I played if it got too bad, idk how I felt about that though.
If you're having a chat with someone on the smegas, you might as well be using the chat box. It's there for a reason. The whole server doesn't need to hear you having a conversation with someone/group, unless you're asking for feedback on something, etc. Having a cooldown on smegas would be great.
Hehe, fun times in Extalia man. Though I don't think "useless smegas" would really be an issue, I think it would be possible/good to adopt the 'no more than 3 smegas within 5 minutes' rule that the server had, that way people would still be able to advertise leech/recruitment within 3 smegas while keeping spam to a minimal. Still, the only downside I can see as you probably noticed back then, is the petty reports of people made all the time.
For reference I do want to mention that we have had this discussion before on the MapleRoyals forums and the opinions on adding a cooldown were kind of mixed. The previous discussion about this subject can be found here: https://royals.ms/forum/threads/cooldown-period-on-smegas.23789/ At that time Staff had decided they would rather monitor smegas themselves and mute or ban those who purposely spam or send inappropriate messages, rather than forcing everyone to become restricted in the amount of smegas they can use just because a few players have spammed in the past. My opinion on this subject hasn't really changed, and I still am to believe that spamming by a single player does not happen very often and that it isn't worth limiting everyone else because of a handful of players. Even if this time around the majority would be in favor of adding a cooldown, I don't really see it becoming useful as the average player has 1-4 game clients open and with that could easily bypass this cooldown.
So why not implement the cooldown? Just 2 minutes. I see no situation at all where a person feel the need to use a smega continuously in less than 2 minutes, other than to spam. I believe nobody is going to be put at a disadvantage if there's a cooldown in using smega, unless they are the spammer and they want to spam, lol. I mean, really, what's the downside in this? I can't think of any situation where continuous smega is actually needed, other than to spam. If people are bypassing the cooldown, then they are the ones that the Staff should be muting or banning.
From personal experience the most common reason for the average player to use a second smega right after the first one, is when the message you want to broadcast is slightly longer than what fits in a single smega. If we were to apply a cooldown of 2 minutes, it means a player has to wait 2 minutes just to finish his sentence. In the situation of trying to recruit for a bossfight, buying or selling items or similar activities I can imagine it being quite annoying and frustrating if this would be the case. For that reason alone I would already vote no to having a cooldown on smegas, and would rather see us at Staff continue to filter out the few spammers there are. You mention that if a player was to bypass this cooldown you've suggested, we should ban or mute those players. However in that scenario we would have to check if all of these characters that are writing smegas in a spammy situation are connected, which sounds like a lot of extra unnecessary work. I understand that some players find certain types of smegas annoying and would rather not see them at all in the smega environment, but I don't feel like adding a cooldown to smegas is the way to go. If a player wants to send a message like for example 'I love xguild' or 'Shoutout to xplayer', he will still find a way to do so whether there is a cooldown or not. Those are just a few downsides that come to my mind whenever I think about adding a cooldown to smegas, there are probably more that I haven't thought of at all. I'm not here to shoot the suggestion down into the ground, but I do want you to weigh the upsides and the downsides of a suggestion and then see if it's still worth it or not.
Imo, similar to spamming in fm, one can ask the spammer to stop via whisper or by smega a line "please stop spamming" (if his whisper chat is disabled, i believe you wont mind paying for 1smega i supposed), and if the spammer ignored the warning, take a screenshot and a report can be filed. When smega spam flood my chatbox, i usually type a few lines to clear it , e.g "clear1", "clear2"... and those pink colour messages are gone
I have yet to see anyone actually doing that since joining. Most of the time, they could get whatever their intended message to fit in just one smega. The continuous use of smega I've seen so far are Spam Fixing an error in previous smega, eg typo Flaming (staff usually intervene on this, so no problem there) As for the second point go, I'm pretty sure the person can fix the error after waiting for the 1 or 2 minute cooldown. In fact, that's how it was few days ago. A person was selling PGC and accidentally typed something like "S>PGC 4slots 5 slots 900m", then he/she fixed the mega after roughly 1 minute, "S>PGC 4 ATT* 5 slots 900m". You say it might frustrate players to have to wait the cooldown in similar cases, but how many are actually going to be affected by it? Because I'm almost certainly sure most would try to fit it in one smega, rather than splitting it in two. Again, like I said, I'm fine if they do these kind of things from time to time. I'm totally fine with people expressing their love for their friends and guilds. The content isn't the problem here; the spamming is. Less than 5 minutes and the entire chatbox is filled with 4 to 5 different person spamming smega. There's absolutely no control over here. And I don't think any normal person would go to the length of bypassing a 1 or 2 minute cooldown (if it is implemented) on smega just to express their love for their friends and guilds. If they do, then they warrant to be muted. Also, if I may ask, is it difficult to implement this system? Is the code for it complex? Or just the opposite? If it isn't, why not do a test run for, say, 1 or 2 weeks and see how it goes?
I've seen it happen thousands of times since I've joined, but I joined in 2014 and you joined 2-3 weeks ago. With that said I'd like to believe I have a fair idea of what happens on MapleRoyals on a daily basis all year around and that I have reasons to believe that the suggestion of just adding a cooldown to smegas could have unintentional negative side effects. I am also to believe that certain types of smegas being a tad annoying to some players, should not be a reason to force restrictions on the entire community. You play a game with over 1000 other players, you're bound to love and hate certain aspects of the game. But please remember that for every 1 player that hates a certain aspect of the game there's likely also going to be 1 player who loves that aspect, and if we take away this aspect from the game you do 1 player a favor and ruin the experience for the other. Based on that and the thread I've linked before in one of my earlier posts, I do feel like adding a cooldown to smegas would influence the gaming experience of some players in a negative way which makes it sound less feasible than the way you think it would work out. The answer to this question can be found in the thread I linked in my first post in this thread.
Then I guess this suggestion is still a no- go then. Guess I just have to bear with it. Muh chat experience!
Like I've mentioned before, my intentions with these posts are not to show a complete opposition to the idea of stopping spammers by adding a cooldown to smegas. But I do want to raise awareness for the fact that there could be negative effects to suggestions such as these as well, and that I'd like to see how you would deal with those in your suggestion. If the suggestion sounds feasible, it would definitely be worth considering trying it out.
what about a certain amount of smegas allowed per minute? idk i really hated when people smega their conversations
How do people get annoyed by smegas? It's just a harmless line of pixels on your computer screen, not a full screen pop up that triggers each time you click or move. You're not pushed against your will to read it nor are you obligated to, if you don't like it then ignore it. If something as trivial as smegas bother you then I honestly don't know how you get through your day, do you like cover your ears everywhere you go so you don't hear other people's conversations on the streets? This "issue" is only as big of a deal as you make it out to be, the sooner you learn to ignore them the sooner it'll get resolved.
When I see a large volume of smegas, it's rarely because of a single person or few people spamming. When it is, it's not often enough to justify slapping a cooldown on smegas. I don't think this kind of change is necessary nor would it accomplish much.
Amazing command called ~togglesmegas. We already lost the ability to obtain them as drops. If people are going to pay 3mil for an smega, we should be able to sue them as much as we want.
