Closed Captain Latanica didn't drop Black Essence

Problem: I just killed Capt. Latanica, but he only dropped Soul Lantern when he should also drop Black Essence.
I saw in a vid once that he does around 1.5k damage, yet he's done 4k damage to me. does that have anything to do with my char defense stat?
Details: ^^ Can you please refund me 1 Black Essence?
