Once upon a time, every player started out on this server fresh with nothing but the starting clothes on our backs and hope in our hearts that we can enjoy our nostalgic experience once more that is MapleStory. Over the years, we have continued to play and some of us are more veteran than others. As I'm starting to get up there in years, I see the same items being offered as end event rewards, namely rings. If you participate in an event X amount of times, you are rewarded with a one of a kind ring that grants very nice stat bonuses. Each year, hundreds, of not thousands of players participate in these events daily to get the rings. But when next year rolls around, the same item in which they already have is still being offered. Wth the exception of the items you can collect during the event, the end game rings don't provide many players who already have it incentive to participate again.

We have all stayed up late to get that extra daily event in, set alarms to wake up in the middle of the night to log on for the hourly event, and even to show up late for real life obligations to squeeze in one more run. After we all work so hard to obtain these items, that's it. There's currently nothing more to offer. This is where I believe I have an idea that can increase player incentive to stay excited and anticipate events.

May I present, upgradeable event rings! You would still need to participate in the event the same number of times as other players, but when you reach the end and are typically rewarded with the ring, loyal players to the server can instead get a buff on their existing ring. My thoughts would be +1 to every stat already on the ring, or even a +1 to a single stat of your choice.

I really think this will give older players more reason to wipe the dust off of some of their older characters and everyone a chance to strive to be that much better than the competition and give another reason, even if small, to continue being an active member of the game.

This sounds like a great idea.
I don't think it would skew the balance of the game in favor of veterans because the rewards would be fairly inconsequential given the time period it takes to upgrade your ring. MapleRoyal's been around for 4 years now? So had this event been initiated since the inception of this server you'd have a +4 all stat ring.

It would be an item unique to this server. I'm all for it.

It reminds me of the Lilin Rings and the Unwelcome rings from GMS.

So you're talking about... one of these bad boys [IMG] becoming one of these?

I like the idea, as long as it stays consistent and it's a yearly thing. Would give the people who have the ring already a reason to do the event on their mains

    The Royals Ring.
Great idea. So it starts out as +1 all stat, maybe even +1 ATT, and each time you complete the required event participation entries, it goes up 1 on everything and maybe add 50 HP more.
Like the old GMS Mark Of The Beta, but useful.

OMG YES. Old MS used to have EVO rings, but that was when it was pay to win. So maybe nerf the upgrades a little compared to GMS? But upgradable rings sounds good.

I think this would be hard to implement, although im not a programmer so I don't know for sure. Also, I think it's a bit late now for it to apply for the current event. I would love for this to happen for the next events that are upcoming like Thanksgiving and Halloween. I think input from @Andreas or @Karven would be very constructive for this discussion.

Yeah but several times a year is too often for something like an across the board stat increases ya know?

I was talking about only being able to upgrade the respective ring from that event, like the Pumpking Pie Ring being upgraded every Thanksgiving or the Zombie Ring being upgraded every Halloween. I don't think +1 all stat 3 times a year is too much. You can only have 4 rings equipped, 3 event rings and a krexel ring. Even upgrading the valentine ring with 1+att would be pretty tame since you could only do it once a year. Obviously, HP and MP bonuses should be scaled up a little since +1 is far too low. I could see +10 to each being fairly balanced.

Yeah but they shouldnt be something that if you dont have them upgraded every few months for a couple years your damage is considered bad, ya know? We want to give people who stick around a reason to do the events each year, not make them something you need to have a decent character.

3 times a year is too often, 2 would be pushing it, once a year for each ring is plenty, IMO.

I think you are misunderstanding what I meant. I meant that you would get 3 total; one each for each event ring every year when the respective event occurs.

Really not much for me to add, yes it's possible and you can do it with very little effort, so that's not a problem.
    Personally I like the idea.

Glad to know this could be hypothetically added to the game :)
    Thanks Andreas

This should seriously be considered as an addition to MapleRoyals. It's gonna be a while until the Thanksgiving event, so I hope to see this discussed among the GMs and such. Also, the Pumpkin Pie Ring sucks so it would be legit to get an upgrade lol.

I think what Evan is saying is that if you missed out on for example one year, you would lose three ring upgrades. It definitely feels bad for newer players to be permanently disadvantaged (no matter how small) with no way to make up the difference.

While I totally understand where you're coming from I have to disagree with your justification. For one, new players are always at a disadvantage in every MMO and that will never change. Someone will always be ahead of you, but the rings themselves are already not a big deal in terms of power. If you've played the game for an entire year, you get 5 all stat, +260 HP/MP, 1 att, some speed and some jump. I was only proposing that you could perhaps get +1 to stats, att, speed, jump, etc, and like +10 or so to hp/mp per ring per event. It would give long time players an incentive to continue to run events on their main accounts and not mules beside untradable event chairs. After all, events are almost exclusively targeted to existing players, yet the rewards hardly reflect that. Personally, I didn't run the current Valentine's day event on my main characters at all. I only ran it on a low level character and a character I've barely touched in a year just because they didn't have rings. It would have been nice to be able to be rewarded on my mains, which I would have greatly preferred. I hope you understand where I'm coming from now.

P.S. I never expected this thread to get necro'd lol

What if they had a slot and create a "Chaos Scroll for Rings"
That scroll could be given every year togheter with the ring itself, so people could try to scroll it, and in case it fails, they'd still have an extra ring.

I think that's problematic, since the 2 Carat Lovebirds Ring has 1 WA and MA on it. You could also ruin all the stats on the ring potentially making it useless. I think that's against the design of event rings, which are a small boost for people who participate it events year round. It not really comparable to something like the Maple Scarf (which also has 1 WA), since there are no other rings to equip unlike the pendant slot.

Question is, there are the same events, with the same rewards, every year.
So the chances would be equal for old and new players to get a godly ring.
Different than the idea above of upgrading it constantly.

I personally don't like the idea of power creeps increasing between old and new players just because they have played for more time. It gives competitive new players (and old players that create new characters to compete on) a hard time catching up to something they wouldn't be able to obtain.
I also don't like the existence of the pre-wipe rings for this reason.
