Did you also kill the wolves spawned? Read the text carefully, what the NPC is saying to you. He will clearly tell you whether or not you will get a reward
I think you were right; I asked people about it. The first time I did it while the server just opened, they didnt let me out unless I killed all the spawn, but I think they changed that. I must've missed one
