If that's your intention, maybe you should remove the "Stop leeching at its source!" part of the title, LOL.

Actually, when I read your original post now, I realize it's not about "stop leeching at its source". It's about making leech more balanced ...

Recept they're not as @Evan stated. Multiclient FTW

Lol @ comparing leeching with hacking
Exactly. Allow mages to do their job

Todays reference that bossing is lucrative. More than leeching. Quoted veteran player and GM:

    @Rimfrost
If you're not afk then what I'm saying doesn't even apply to you. Did you forget my original post?
Leeching is very comparable to hacking. Both allow you to skip parts of the game, both undermine people who play normally, both allow you to "play" while away from your computer. Yeah leeching costs mesos, but so do hacked items and it's still bannable to knowingly buy items from hackers.
I never said bossing wasn't more lucrative so idk what that screenshot is trying to prove.
    @Evan
I never said mages shouldn't be able to farm. My original suggestion was to stop leeching "at its source" by cutting off party exp for afk players. I just think it's absurd that in a video game people are able to gain exp points and level up without even being present or participating. To say what I said earlier: Leveling up should be an achievement you gain through playing the game.
Washing is definitely a related issue. There's the common myth that you can't level a washed character without leeching. I got my gunslinger to 3rd job while washing without leeching. Even though I couldn't hit, I was still welcomed into pqs just for taking a spot in the party and actively participating.
I definitely think a washing solution is important though, and I've talked about it a lot in other threads. I hope solving that problem will allow more people to pick the class they prefer, and that it would impact the amount of people leeching, but I don't think it will. Too many people realize the speed and low effort nature of leeching completely obliterates traditional gameplay.

I think the best way to stop leeching is to nerf exp by 90% to party members that haven't killed a mob in ~1 minute.

Remove ToT quest telelock and make obv4 leech viable, this way archmages will have something to work toward gearwise.

And as for all you “leech is not how this game is played pq is the way to go ppl”, pre bb maple is all about leeching- thats why a CD was introduced on “ultimates” after big bang patch. There wasn’t any high level pq content, the only one I recall was unwelcome guest pq and cwkpq- none of which are like lpq/lmpq/ppq/opq. Poor people that were unable to afford leech did newties party grind, but grinding during 3rd job is only viable for nonwashing people that can actually deal damage. Looking forward to next patch for the 2k total hp increase but I feel it is still not enough; maybe 3~3.5k is more fitting.

What should be fixed is ppq here. Either buff the exp obtained or make it 55+. The current exp from ppq is absolute crap for 70-100 and there is no incentive to do it.

Yet it is not bannable to leech. So stop comparing the two. Besides you don't know whether or not the buyer is AFK. 90% of the time I'm not. I multiclient on another account. You don't sit by the computer 100% of the time when you're logged in @Raflos. Correct me if I'm wrong

Leechers don't undermine people who play "normally".
Boss at HT > Get a book > Sell the book > Buy leech and/or equips for the hard earned Mesos >
New players sell leech > Get money > fund a new char > Boss at HT

If you don't like this approach then you should find another version of MapleStory
    [IMG]
(don't take this too seriously. Lol. Sorry)

When I first joined this server like you I started off slow. As I made another character I could afford some leech. This is the cycle
You're not forced to buy or sell leech. You're still able boss early on. You should do so if you desire. Don't force your kind of gameplay on others

But that's not true. I played pre-bb maple from 07-09, never saw anyone leech. Even if there were people leeching it was not to the extreme that it is here.

The fact that it isn't bannable doesn't change the aspects of it that resemble hacking that I mentioned before, such as the fast and easy nature that make traditional gameplay obsolete. Leeching and hacking both remove certain gameplay limitations that make the game challenging, but leeching has been around for so long that seemingly everyone has forgotten that there's an entire half of the game that still exists.
Afk out of the house, afk playing another game, even afk playing royals on another client while earning exp is breaking gameplay limitations too much. NOT because of the dual-clienting aspect of it- I have no problem with dual clienting, or with being afk in general. But if you are afk, there is no reason you should gain exp on the afk characters. This is game-breaking, because this means your meso count is the only thing limiting you from training an indefinite number of characters simultaneously.
By people who play "normally" I meant people who play without buying or selling leech. They're stuck waiting in pq lobbies, and watching their friends dominate them in the race to 4th job. The only "solutions" are to jump on the band wagon and join in on the leeching craze or to "focus on self-achievements" as people say. Which at that point you might as well just play an offline rpg. And to say "This is the cycle" is the same as saying "This is just how things are done around here". True, but that doesn't mean it's good.
"Find another version of MapleStory" - My interest for maple is fading slowly, so you might not have to worry about that one for long lol. My friend who I started on this server with already quit, so I'm just lingering around waiting for the update and cwkpq...

It is because it ain't viable in 1x EXP.

You're probably looking for the word time. Time it takes to level up. Time it takes to do other things in game to cover the costs. Plus Minus Zero. Status quo
You can still scroll, join JQ GM events, kill bosses, being a Hene Hoe. You name it. One thing doesn't exclude the other

Let me stop you right there. I joined this server with 2 friends. They used to PQ. I used to grind. Why do you think they have Chronos in Ludi for instance? You can train w/o leech there. Ez. That is what I did mate

    Yes. Lemme paraphrase the website:

If they lowered the rates to 1x leechers would go away. Along with many others

If they removed leech less people would play as AM/BS resulting in:
    • Market crash
    • Less scrolls available in FM
    • Less items available in FM
    • Less of everything
Like I mentioned earlier in this discussion: ROI
ROI as in time invested. It doesn't matter where you started or where you're at. You do things differently
There are 3 primary sources of income that you find feeding the market:
    • Exchange Quests/Selling craftable items/Event items i.e recently envelopes etc
    • Leech
    • Bossing (books, EXP and/or items) etc
Without farming/grinding you wouldn't be able to scroll
Without farming/grinding you wouldn't be able to merch because lesser items would be available
Gaching would be pointless because people are poor now ^
    APQ People are still poor
As a result of boss runners hitting 200 they would run out of things to do because demand doesn't exist

I don't have any level 200 (yet) but I can see many people upgrade their gear once t hey do. GL w/o any market supporting you
We're a knit community. You need leechers for various reasons

My argument isn't to stop leeching but more power should be back in the hands of nonleechers that's for sure

I could think of a couple but would need to articulate it properly, it's too early int he morning for long posts haha but something along the lines of making doing PQs and making grinding more attractive imo. And also PQs could be level locked

Time is part of it, yeah. Getting ahead in a game should take an active time investment for more than just the first playthrough. Some games have "new game+" mode, but even those don't give you the ability to skip the first half of the game.

It's the party exp rate that makes it so much faster than other leveling methods, not the overall rate. The problem though with gms's low exp rate for party members, is that the last person to hit a boss would receive more exp than everyone else. I'm assuming that what happened is that the admins of this server solved that problem by raising the shared exp rate, but that created leeching as a side-effect.

Probably true, but as it stands now there's a big unusual abundance of mages because they are used so often as meso-earning tools. Especially because of hp washing it's viewed as necessity to make a mage first so you can go through the process of earning mesos to fund the ridiculously expensive gun/archer/sin.
All I want is for everyone to be able to pick their favorite class based on preference. Which is why I like your previous idea of making mages boss-worthy.

You have a good point about the supply of scrolls and items dropping if this happened, and of course people who were relying on leech for their plans or whatever would be in a bad spot. So I should say this. I would never expect the staff to implement my idea abruptly since it would be way too jarring of a change for something so embedded in the game to suddenly disappear.
Instead what I should have suggested is for afk party members to receive exp at a lower rate. Then as the months/years go by to gradually decrease that rate.

Lots of boss runners would get pissed off is this was changed.
That is why it's so good. Newer people sell leech and fund older players so they can make their chars washed. Without stuff to do people would quit anyway.

Matt is admin on Royals if you didn't know. See full post here

If you're gonna remove leech so you can make AMs boss-worthy then you have to make HEAVY alterations to the game. Either way you make them top-notch like NLs or keep them the way they are

In the end you want attackers to have fun but leave AMs in the dust

Yeah they would, thankfully my suggestion doesnt affect boss runners (as long as they aren't afk).
So you think it's better to have fewer options from when you first join the server and to have a giant hurdle of tasks to accomplish before you actually get a choice of what class to play? I don't agree with that.
People heavily discourage not hp washing and tell you things like "you'll never be accepted into a bossing party without at least 9.8k hp". At this point it's like making a mage with luk.
Buffing attacks like chain lightning to make them more useful in a boss fight doesn't sound like a heavy alteration to me.

    @Eli
You should expect that if you make a thread about leeching that people are going to discuss leeching.
I disagree with your approach because I don't think it's the "source" of leeching. I think the reason that leeching exploded was the change in the party exp rate. But changing it to 80:20 would disrupt bossing, because the person who lands the final hit would get more exp. That's why I came up with my suggestion.

    You render BF pointless etc
On other versions you get linked skills or w/e they're called. They force you to create more chars there. In comparison this is ez. You are NEVER forced to create a leech class. You can merch in FM, APQ, Scroll. LIKE YOU SAID
Boss runners prefer damage over HP
199k per Chain Lightning sure. Make it viable. But that ain't gonna happen
