    Hi Royallers!

It’s been almost a month since Update 54 hit MapleRoyals; and now that most of the issues that arrived with this major release have been ironed out, we figured now would be a good time to give you a progress update, as well as ask for some feedback regarding the recent update.

As most of you probably know, update 54 had taken a very long time for us to release, and this was mostly due to the major revamp of the login server, and changes to how each server (login, world, channels, and cash shop) communicates with one another. And now, after seeing things working in the live environment, we are very pleased to say that the update has largely exceeded our expectations in regards to stability and significantly so for performance - even so with our very high online player counts this month! This has been a major milestone for us in being able to provide a stable and easily maintainable environment for our players.

We will continue to monitor the game for further issues, persevering to fix older bugs and issues that remain in the game, as well as providing new content and events for players to enjoy.

With us leaving update 54 behind, there are a few things that we would like to highlight for the coming updates which you can read about below.

    Control Panel Progress:

The new control panel is currently our main priority. It has taken us much more time than expected, in large this is due to the old age of our website; our original plan was to just make modifications to the current website to support all the new control panel features, but it is very outdated and doesn’t hold up to the high standard we have a need for, and as such a complete overhaul has been required. Visually we expect to make further changes to it down the line when we start to tackle the complete website overhaul, even so - it will be different from what we currently have.

The internals of the control panel is the most exciting part, it will give us the ability to much easier maintain, and extend what features are available, the most significant ones coming at first are of course the PIC opt out, and being able to retrieve lost PIN/PIC’s. It will also serve as the foundation from which the new website will be built on.

    Website/Forum Revamp:

This one we haven’t discussed before, in the coming months we will be launching a new overhauled website, complete with new design. This will complete the update towards the websites internals, update its performance, and of course visually improve a dated design.

The forum will not receive an overhaul, however we will be updating the forum software we use, which should improve your experience interacting with it, it will also finally mark the return of the forum search bar, we will also be releasing our in-house built shout box add-on, which will improve performance and fix some annoying legacy problems that exist today.

    Coming Updates:

We would like to specifically address the next two updates update 55 and 56, which if you remember (LINK) will be Crimsonwood Keep PQ, and Guild PQ.

Since update 54 was released and our focus shifted ahead towards the coming update; we noticed that there were some items missing from the files which would be obtained from CWKPQ, as well as a small addition that we plan to introduce for the PQ. Unfortunately this will result in a new files being required for before we can release it.

Since it will take us a couple of weeks to prepare the new files for release, coupled with the fact that players have been waiting for a very long time to obtain certain skills such as Assassinate 30 from GPQ (and Airstrike from a separate quest being released with GPQ); we feel the most appropriate decision is to swap these two updates around, meaning the next update being released will be GPQ, followed shortly by the release of CWKPQ.

    Update 54 Feedback:

With everything else we wanted to bring up said, we would very much like to hear your thoughts about some of the changes and additions from update 54, in particular:
    • What are your thoughts on the new Mastery Books, and should they be kept?
    • What do you think about the increased experience gained from Papulatus, should this also remain in the game?
    • What are your thoughts about the newly released boss in Shaolin Temple, Wulin Yaoseng?

As well as the above, we are also happy to hear any other feedback you may have about any of the other changes made in update 54, whether it be the slightly increased ETC rates, to something as little as the added transparency to the in-game timers. We’d love to hear any feedback you have to offer.

I really like this new idea since they can be stacked with the same book, but its there's a chance to change it from maybe the picture of the skills and the number of this (20 & 30)? Since its kinda confused at the moment when i see them at my inventory.

    Example

Oh, new website! Loving the work you've done for us thus far and can't wait for more updates in the future!

EDIT: Not sure how many times this has been brought up before, but I'll ask anyway. Have you guys ever considered making some sort of auto-updater? I mean, I'm sure some people kinda do not want to re-download the client every time an update/bugfix/whatever comes out. Plus it cuts down on work for you work, since you don't have to ban people for using older client as you've done in the past.

Seems unnecessary honestly, leave it closer to how it was unless it's a huge QoL fix imo (much like being able to stack Mastery Books).

(Just to preface this, we're looking for feedback directly related to Update 54 in this thread - while I'm happy to answer this question, we'd rather this thread not turn into a AMA.)

@Auto-updater: Actually, yes! There's already been a tremendous amount of work in the background in regards to this. Generally, the idea goes like this: The WZ format is a somewhat complex and generally unfriendly format to work with; creating a patcher for it isn't impossible, but there are a ton of possible issues that may arise (stuff like misinterpreting WZ file format logic thus creating bugs within the file itself (no matter how small), amongst many other potential issues that stem from not being the author of the format you're attempting to modify). Ideally, we'd like our auto-updater to use delta patches - instead of redownload entire files, you'd just download the parts of files that have changed, and the WZ format has proven that going that route won't be all that pretty (which is largely why updates would fail very often back in the day on retail versions of the game and would require a full redownload to fix).

Instead, I've developed a new system for storing MapleStory game data - we call it 'MR', or .mr. This file format takes what the WZ format accomplished and builds on top of it - files are very quick to load and save, they're significantly smaller in size compared to their WZ equivalent, and delta updates are a piece of cake to create and apply. Along with that, I needed to build the necessary tooling (an editor, and the WZ to MR converter) needed to be able to properly interact with the new format, make the server use the format for anything related to game data, and lastly, as we can't simply take the new .mr files and have the game client understand how to use them, we'll also need to create a custom-made client. The format itself is in place (and has been used in the server since before 2017!), the tooling is functional and has undergone hundreds of hours of usage already, which means the last part needed to bring .mr and all of it's benefits to the community is the custom client itself, and once that's close to being released, the auto-patcher. As you could imagine, none of this is easy work - the amount done is already tremendous, and rebuilding the client from scratch is no easy feat either. We absolutely want to get this functionality into users hands as soon as possible - I can definitely say that progress has been moving forward in this regard! Obviously there's way more benefits that are to be had by having a custom-made client, with the auto-patcher being just one of them. I can't give a definitive timeline as to when to expect more news on the client, but we soon as we have any exciting news to share, we will.

-The new books is very convenient and Papalatus new exp makes it easier to find people to boss with since it's more appealing to go. I like both changes.
-New maps to explore are always great and we ended up getting 2 in this patch. The boss is very unique with his difficulty relying on time limit and high hp summons.

I really like that GPQ is taking priority over CWKPQ even though most people would rather have CWKPQ. There are a lot of unattainable, subpar, and bugged skills that I think should get full attention.

Honestly I’m glad the staff team decided to implement GPQ before CWKPQ. Understandably most players would prefer cwk because who plays shadowers in this NLstory meta anyways ;) but the game is essentially incomplete without all available skillbooks for all classes. Good job there !

Could the Tachions or w/e Papulatus drops be made to do something worthwhile? I think you can currently take them to the cave area before Zakum and get exp for them but the amount is pretty sad. Could it be raised? Or used for anything else? I still don't see many people looking to do Pap, whether that be because they solo it or not.

    • I personally love the New Mastery books and think that they should definitely be kept! It's so much easier to differentiate them within your inventory and the fact that they can stack as well is just great.
    • I can't comment on Papulatus because I haven't killed it since the update.
    • I was disappointed to see that it doesn't have any unique drops so it left me wondering what its purpose is. I'm a big fan of the boss itself since it's a fun challenge due to the 10 minute timer but even though it has no unique drops I feel that its exp a bit too rewarding for what it is, especially considering that certain classes can solo it. If it were up to me I'd cut its experience in half and allow players to fight it twice per day instead of once.
Thanks for the update! Looking forward to everything that's still to come. :D

Well done Mr. Karven. Or should I say karven.mr? This sounds amazing!

I can't comment much on the updates yet because I haven't had the opportunity to try them out :(
Both Papulatus EXP and Skill Book redesign seems cool though!
I'm looking forward to the time when I can try out all the new features of #54 and the coming updates as well.

I'm also curious what all the Marksmen think of their big buff.

It was good in the sense that the buff was a huge improvement on the perception of Marksmen amongst the community. However, the actual buff was "okay"; The damage increase on strafe was blown out of proportion.

Edit: Skill book stacking is great, please don't revert it!
I kill pap everyday and while the exp buff is welcome, it isn't a big deal.
The minimum HP to fight Yaoseng is too much, most ranged people can never kill it unless insanely washed, or fairly washed with HB.

You think Marksmen are perfect in balance now or still need a rework? I was actually hoping for a raised damage cap since it benefits all the weaker classes.

I think they're at a decent spot. In my opinion, they are only weak because people perceived them as weak. I personally never actually have any trouble keeping up with other BM's when I party with them. Marksmen is a good class for the unfunded to above average, but falls behind to the godly funded BM.

Side note: If you increase the damage cap by more than 100k, I think that would make them far too strong for the unfunded. They would do too much damage without having to actually buy items.

I'm disappointed with no bucc/shadower buff, and the paladin's buff was kinda useless too (hammer still got the same cd at max lvl and total crash isn't really better than power crash cause nobody cares about magic cancel usually).
Bucc is currently the weakest attacker class in the game yet there are no plans to buff it, not to mention that unlike other classes new source actually nerfed this class (even with the several buffs it got) due to SI being much less useful (not working on mages anymore) and TL no longer allowing you to do infinite transform

You mean to raise the damage cap but keep snipe at 199k? (likewise for similar skills)

    1. I love the mastery book update! Made my life way easier and create a ton more space on my storage mule. It was definitely a great QoL upgrade.

    2. Can't comment on the papulatus buff as I haven't done it. But from what I heard, it's exp is quite competitive for the time spent, which is great.

    3.
Had lots of fun on this boss. Initially my Hb mule wasn't LV 120 so it couldn't do the prequest to get in the boss. Since I didn't have enough hp without hb to deal with yaoseng, it would mean my party had to buff Hb before entering and kill this in 4-5mins. We made some strategies to deal with the clones to speed up the kill and I can say, it is way better than mindlessly dealing dps to other bosses (hint: bishops/fp can be useful on the clones too). Also love the fact that warriors have an advantage against the NL meta in this boss due to the clones.

Others: MM might have been seen as a important and necessary buff but after doing the math on the various classes dps, I feel that it is more important to look at buccaneers, which have far and below dps compared to other classes. Pallies' have become much better imo. Total crash is a really useful skill and if there were more type effective bosses, paladins would be pretty good. Bucc, on the other hand, have atrocious dps. SI, imo, does not justify its low dps since the highest dps classes do not benefit (NL, BM) or benefit minimally from it (Corsair).

I agree with this. Although I personally benefited from the Marksmen buff, I felt that Paladins, Buccs and even Shadowers needed a buff much more.

I didn't know that could be done that way, but I wouldn't mind. I know Buccaneers would get a tiny buff from it and Shadower's a pretty huge one at times, but if Heaven's Hammer were to get a damage cap raise that may get in the way of a Blast/acb buff I want.

yeah they're undeniably stronger than Bowmaster's in the early game so if they were to get 399k Snipe they would have to lose their current buff.
