This doesn't need to be in a .exe it could easily be on website. So why the .exe? How can we be sure this isn't a jewhook? Because antiviruses can't see a jewhook.
So you have checked the code and uploaded the program yourself? Or has another admin done so? Back when i played EMS a person managed to hack 2000 people using a jewhook, using a public program that had gone through virusscans and everything. But little did people know that their account info was sent to his server, when they logged into the game with the program running.
Total- Jewhook in the way that he's explaining it is not the derogatory term. We looked it up already.
What I would like to say here is that since we don't have the source for the code, if people wish to download this calculator, they may do so at their own risk. I can verify that it comes up clean on checks for viruses and spyware, but beyond that, there is no way of telling.
VirusTotal is a website that scans an application with 54 antivirus programs. The results show there is no virus/malware/PUP contained within the installer. While these files should be downloaded at the user's risk, I don't think the OP meant any harm and was trying to help people out using their coding skills. Let's not jump all over someone when they were just trying to help.
Why can't you ask for the code and then compile it yourself? I mean it's a pretty simple program, I can't see why he woulnd't mind letting you guys check it for everyones safety. If he won't send you the code, atleast take a look at the program in wireshark and check for abnormal network calls from either maplestory or the program itself. That's just what it was named, I have nothing against any religion or race, that's just what people call it.
@TotalGlamour: As I said, it's not being used in a derogatory way here. That's the actual name of the specific exploit he's talking about.
The exploit is named after the derogatory term, so in my eyes its still very offensive. Replace Jewhook with N****hook, Spichook, chinkhook.....whats the difference. Sure its the term for the exploit hes talking about but its still VERY inappropriate.
It's the name, if I called it something else people woulnd't know what the hell I was talking about. The name wouldn't make any sense if I put something else in front, we all know why it has jew in front, and we can all agree that it's racist and perhaps wrong, but it's just beside the point. It has this name to symbolize a code hook that grabs your info. Nothing more nothing less. Enough of this.
There's a teensy problem here - the three members of staff who are potentially capable of checking the code are not Windows users, and this is a Windows app. It sounds like you might know how to check the code, and if you wish to do so yourself to confirm that it is safe, you are very welcome to do so. From a lengthy discussion with Chokladkakan, I am under the impression that it would be very difficult even for a dev who is used to working with Windows to check this out. I know someone who works as a professional games dev and will be seeing him soon, so I can get his opinion, but from reading up, the exploit does not sound as though it is commonplace, and I do know that ccplz made a patch for it when it was injected into a trainer (yes, my use of hacker terminology is utterly fail - I've always been legit). In the unlikely event of this calculator containing something dubious, I'm fairly sure we could dig around for information needed to patch it. I would also like to put this discussion into perspective in terms of account security - if you take into account the risks posed by account-sharing, guessable account details, using the same login and password on other servers and people being careless about what personal information they make public, then bear in mind the likelihood of this calculator containing the work of an advanced hacker, you will hopefully see where the bigger problem lies. As for the offensive name of the exploit - how about we refer to it as a J-hook from now on?
Well, I can check the code. But I would just be another user claiming it's safe or not, since I'm no mod, and playing the game less than once a week doesn't exactly add to people's trust in me. I see your point about security, the whole thing at ccplz happened because there was a huge black market, and there where lots of real cash to be earned, I assume that isn't the case on this server. About the name, sure.
The real name is jewhook, but the mod decided we are only allowed to call it j-hook now. (This is why renaming shit is a very bad idea)
Well I googled jewhook as well and it didn't turn up anything substantial besides some anti-jewhook threads on ccplz, and of course the offensive nature of the term. From the other posts in this thread it seems that this hook is able to bypass virus scans, and sneak client information to other places unbeknownst to the client? If so it sounds dangerous and there really should be more awareness of it.
Well, I could go ahead and release the code it uses for everyone, but I'm not sure that's a good idea...
The difference would probably be that Jew is not an inherently negative term? The others you listed are all words that have immediate and obvious connotations of bigotry/vulgarity. Jew can be used in a negative context, but so can pretty much any word. To say that the word Jew is in any way equivalent to what you have listed there is just criminally negligent. OT: @Pheelo I was thinking, is there any way you could add a feature to this so that you enter a level and your current stats, and the calculator tells you your projected HP at that level for each class? Would be really useful.
Yeah, I guess it could be made, I don't have the motivation to it though, perhaps threadstarter can implement that in his program.
