FOR NO “failed in finding proper screen mode for gr2d” ERROR, READ ON. YOU DON’T HAVE TO SWITCH USERS ANY LONGER MY FRIENDS. Hey y’all, so I played Mapleroyals a little bit earlier this year but had to quit and blah blah blah I know you don’t care. So I wanted to start playing again and I wanted to play a bishop, so I figured I might as well make a second account in care I ever wanted to hs myself sometime in the future, but see the problem was I’m on windows 8.1 on my brand new laptop now. I looked around the forum to see if multiclient-ing was first of all still allowed and, I’m pretty sure it is, but just to see if it’s possible on the new windows. The consensus seemed to be that was not possible, and for the first 9 or so hours of my attempts that seemed to be true. After spending so long trying to make it work I became hell-bent on figuring it out so that my time wasn’t wasted, and here are the yields of my efforts: 1. Overview So what we’re going to do is open a virtual machine, and I’m going to explain how to acquire everything and set up everything. This is all free and legal, the only thing that I guess is questionable is the infinite use of the 30 day unregistered windows version. You don’t have to download anything sketchy or pirated operating systems or anything. (This is my first experience with VMs and it seems like most tutorials don’t walk you through the ENTIRE process, and for the inexperienced user I didn’t see it as intuitive) We’re going to use VMWare Workstation, the newest version. I initially tried to use Virtual Box because it was free, and I set up windows XP, Vista, windows 7, and even tried Ubuntu (don’t ask) to try to get the server to load. Every time I tried except for once I received the “failed in finding proper screen mode for gr2d” error, which is apparently the biggest problem for Windows 8 users. I was actually able to get the client to load on windows XP after extensive settings edits, but it was a black screen with sound and the setup.exe was unable to help. I’ve tried sandboxing, changing every setting available, and even using archived methods for fixing the gr2d error that have worked for real MS in the past. It looks like this method that I finally came up with is the only way. TLDR: So yeah, basic process is VMWare Workstation -> Windows 7 -> Setting it up for MapleRoyals 2. Getting VMWare Workstation First, you’re gonna download the VMWare workstation program. http://www.vmware.com/products/workstation/workstation-evaluation Download the first option, VMware Workstation 10 for Windows. Install it (which I don’t want to redo so I can’t walk you through completely but it’s quite straightforward, sorry guys). 3. Creating your Virtual Machine(s) So I just play Mapleroyals off of one of my virtual machines now since running it on windows 8.1 has been inconvenient and buggy in general, and when I’m going to multilog and just bring up 2 virtual machines. If you want to create more than one, all you have to do is this replicate this process. You can use the same OS and everything as much as you want and run as many as your computer can handle (I think?). First you’re going to need an operating system for your VM. We’re going to use Windows 7 because that was the first .iso I was able to find, and when I converted a windows XP .vhd to work for VMWare it didn’t run Mapleroyals anyway. Download the Windows 7 32-bit Ultimate x86 English .iso here: http://www.techverse.net/download-windows-7-iso-x86-x64-microsofts-official-servers/ (Techverse is a pretty reputable site imo, the whole article is about NOT downloading pirated OS’ because of viruses and illegality and stuff, this is safe. These .isos are taken from Microsoft.) Now we can run VMWare and set up a Virtual Machine, so click File > New Virtual Machine. You can choose typical or custom setup, if you know what you’re doing you can go ahead and customize but if you’re just following along you can go for typical. Choose the second option, Installer disc image file, and navigate to your X17-58996.iso. Now you can hit “next” through everything until you get to finish. Hit “edit virtual machine settings,” you don’t have to change anything except possibly memory, although for Windows 7 it should default to 1024mb. Go all the way down to display and make sure “Accelerate 3D graphics is checked. Now you should be good to go! Start up your virtual machine (default name Windows 7) by clicking “power on this virtual machine.” Your Windows 7 operating system will begin to install, let it do its thing and follow any prompts…I can’t remember there being very many but you can always just say that you’ll register windows later. I chose “work” for my internet settings but I don’t think it matters. Your VM will restart a couple of times before it’s a functioning computer. 4. Setting up for some Mapling We’re almost there. The first thing I did was download Firefox because IE8 or whatever hurts my soul, but it also really struggles to load even the most basic of webpages. I strongly recommend this even though I’m not going to browse the internet on my VM, because it makes royals.ms much easier. Then just go to royals.ms and download and run the setup. *You’re not done yet, you will still get the gr2d error* Install mapleroyals. Right click mapleroyals.exe and select properties. Go to the compatibility tab and select “Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3.” I also went ahead and checked “run this program as administrator.” I’m not sure if these are both necessary. Now in your VMWare window, go up to the tab that says VM>Install VMWare tools. This is from memory but install every additional option you can (I can’t remember if VMWare has the “experimental” 3D option or if that’s just Virtualbox, if someone can confirm that’d be great) and allow everything. Your computer will need to reboot. *This is totally necessary* ~Your mouse will lock into the VM when you load Mapleroyals. Pressing Ctrl+Alt will let your mouse pop out again, and alternatively you can just play in windowed mode. 5. You’re done! You should now be able to run Mapleroyals on this virtual machine. If you want to play like I do, just follow the steps again to create another VM and open two windows of VMWare in order to play. Be aware that some computers may not be able to handle this (if you’re on windows 8.x in the first place chances are you’re good) and in this case just open once instance of VMWare and load the other Mapleroyals client off of your windows 8 machine. This is still much easier than switching users. FAQ None yet and I think this is pretty straightforward. Hopefully I will be able to clarify any questions and if something doesn’t make sense or needs to be explained in greater detail, please let me know. Thanks for reading, I hope I helped!
Oracle virtual box is free and is easy to set up. If you know what youre doing go with VMware workstation it's a great product.
Did you try it with the virtual box? I tried it and got the same “failed in finding proper screen mode for gr2d”-error like for Win8. Even if the VM I used was a Win7 or WinXP. With VMware i used the same VM and everything worked perfectly.
Windows 8 has been out for quite a while and I thought VirtualBox would be 100% compatible with windows 8 host by now ... The error I used to get was "Host Critical Structure Corruption". Maybe you don't have latest VirtualBox version. You can try to google your error. If you have VMware I don't know why you even try to work with VB Edit: Maybe VB is still not compatible with Windows8 Host.
Worked fine for me the same way he showed us how to do it. Also you only have to run 1 virtual box to dual client, you can have royals open like regular on win8 then 1 open in the virtual box. If you want to use more then 2 royals at a time then yes more virtual machines are required.
You may have missunderstood me. Virtual Box works fine for me on Win8. My problem is starting MapleRoyals on the VM doesn't work. Even if the VM is Win7/XP starting Maple on my VB causes the same error message as if i would start Maple on Win8 (the failed in proper...-error), so I used the same VM iso on VMWare and had no problem starting Maple. You could be right I might be having an old version. I downloaded it like 6 months ago. And well i have VMWare because i got it for free from my univerity. But my friend won't get it and doesn't want to torrent it (many people get busted these days here in our region), so I tried finding out if VB works. With VMWare you won't need more then 1 VMs. Sandboxie works fine there, so you could run 1 client on host and like 2 clients on 1 VM via Sandboxie. (I tried it) Well assuming your hardware can take it all.
@MoX23 Did you install VM Tools ? If your win7/xp is running fine then the problem might not be VM related.
I actually didn't. I will try it later and report how it went. I totally forgot about it, because on VMWare everything worked fine, without VM Tools.
Sorry for the missunderstanding, I'm using VMware now and i thought your error was related to host. My bad ahah
Ah okay. Well I only have problems starting MapleRoyals on VirtualBox. On VMWare everything is working fine. But starting Maple in the VirtualBox causes, the same error message I get sometimes, when starting Maple on my Win8-host without comaptibility-mode. (failed finding proper...)
1. Install VM Tools 2. Make sure you have all drivers installed ( Video card driver as you are getting “failed in finding proper screen mode for gr2d” error. Lastest version if possible). 3.You might want to check DirectX version.
I cant connect to the game server, I login all right, but after I select my character the screen freezes and then I dc, anyone else?
Do any other programs work? VMware Workstation freezes whenever I try to start it up now and I can't figure out how to fix it >.<
http://www.techverse.net/download-windows-7-iso-x86-x64-microsofts-official-servers/ the links that are shown there are expired.. is there another site where i can download it ?
So uh, just fyi I tried this on a VM (Oracle) running Win7 and I still get the GR2D error.. Yuuup. Just in case anyone was thinking of using Oracle. Lol.
