I speak from experience as someone who's played MapleStory in many of its iterations and from someone who's played MMOs in general. Tutorials... kind of stink after the first or second time you make a character. Now in Maple Story's case, you have people who LOVE Maple Island and even make Islander characters, and I do enjoy the tutorial... the first time. Its way of teaching controls is both simple and intuitive. But for the most part I'm the type of person who is already well and familiar with the game, its controls, etc. and would like to skip straight to Victoria Island, especially when rolling a caster. Doing quests there as one is far too painful (killing anything other than a Snail is...tough, even just to collect Shells for the Three Shells atk, which IIRC scales off of INT) and I'd also like to get my new character's gear on them and be useful as soon as I can. This would also be great for those who want to join the server but also don't want to have to go through the bore-'n'-chore of Maple Island if they already have most of the game ingrained in their head. How it could work is like this: When you make a new character and you get to the Generic NPC with the maple leaf on her, she can ask: "Would you like to play through Maple Island (the tutorial)? >Yes >No" If you pick Yes, you're sent off to Maple Island as normal. If you pick No, you're booted to Victoria Island at Level 8, given the Knife and a Hat to work with and told to grind the last 2 levels yourself if you want to be anything other than a Magician. I mean, you can go to the Island without needing the letter recommendation from Stan, so why not just... cut the middleman out for those who want to do so?
As someone with more than 20 characters that have made it through the island, I don't think this is a big enough concern to warrant the work that it would take to implement. It takes around fifteen minutes to get to level 7 and get off the island if you're being slow/lazy about it. There are bigger fish to fry out there.
I'm against this. Part of the reason Mages get an advancement two levels early is because Maple Island (and consequent areas) is such a struggle without any STR or DEX. Also, there are much worse things to deal with when making a new character than Maple Island. It really doesn't take too much time if you know what you're doing - and you obviously will if it isn't your first character.
Just like you gotta work for any other levels in the game, you should have to work for 1-10. Suck it up. It takes, at most, half an hour.
If leveling up is a huge issue, create an islander, farm up some Red Snail Shells and MP potions and it's a breeze. Although, having the option is nice as well. It's people's loss if they don't want HP Wash early if they don't put Int in first and it's always better to have options in this have for the most part. I'm for the change.
GUYS don't take out maple island! it's where the nostalgias at! plus you get your first chair there. It's useful i love maple island and the quests there it reminds me of my 3rd grade experience
I actually really like this idea better! That's really one of my only two beefs with MapleStory in the first place (the other being "just playing through the island in the first place"). If I could just dump my points into STR for the sake of getting past all the quests and getting to Victoria with a free reset–because I do like finishing the ones on Maple Island so I can go straight to a job trainer–making non-Warriors or -Thieves would be so much easier.
Although I'm ok with things the way they are, I do like the suggestion of optional 1x exp on Maple Island for those who want to rush through the Island rather than do all the quests. I prefer the 1x exp myself for getting characters off Maple Island, as I don't have to be so cautious about accidentally overlevelling.
That's not really the case. Personally, I make new accounts all the time and whenever I get transported to Maple Island, I yell at the screen and say, "I'm a veteran! I don't need this!". More options never hurt anyone.
I would not like to see this implemented. I don't think MapleRoyals should encourage bypassing the tedious parts of the game, but rather try to recreate the game as it was back then.
One huge problem with having the option to skip Maple Island would be the ease with which vote abuse mules could get off the Island and trade AP resets for big profit.
