I was curious, and so I did a traceroute just now myself. I am in New Zealand, so my connection to the server also goes via submarine cables under the pacific, to California, before taking a great adventure across the US, then under the Atlantic to the UK. This is pretty standard for the Asia-Pacific region. For privacy and security reasons, I have removed the data points prior to it hitting California (these are all within New Zealand). Mine is showing lag on that same hop, even though my understanding is that it is early morning in GMT+8 right now. My general feeling is that the differences in your trace routes is not enough to explain noticable lag spikes in game though. The increase in time is a bit less than 25% over when you consider it to be "not lagging". I also wonder if this is actually the full picture. I think the various security systems and DDoS protection we have might not be captured in these trace routes...? And those are what tend to cause the most grief, unfortunately. Despite having a computer science background, I never did much in computer networking though. Perhaps @Apoc_Ellipsis will have some thoughts. Honestly I've not been playing as much with personal stuff and I haven't really had any lag spikes on my side to gather data. I'm over in US West over here.
I am also on GMT +8 timezone and my friends and I have been experiencing the lag spikes. It started about 1/2 weeks ago. I don't think it is an ISP issue as we are all using different ISPs. The lag is usually bearable but lately it has been getting worse. I hope that this can be fixed soon too as it is affecting the gameplay badly T___T.
