Why does Staff do all of this for us? what do they get?

Now this question is open to everyone cuz I want to hear facts as well as conspiracy theories. If this is against rules please delete but I think others are curious about this too, and would be nice to have a short public "press release statement" about Staff's motives for all the work they put in.

A lot of people have told me it's just because they love the server so much, but can love really go this deep? also heard they put it on their resume. okay like I can imagine doing all of the for 6 months, but if you're gonna torture yourself anymore I think there's some sort of reward? LOL

Just an example of stuff I can't imagine dealing with daily:
- Ban appeals
- Moderating forum / discord
- New content
- Taking the initiative to do stuff, being a self starter
- Bug fixes
- Monitoring hacking in game
- Looking out of harassment
- Looking out for RWT
- Hosting events
- Interacting with players

and a lot more

I know some of them may be owners/co-owners so they probably get $$, but what about the rest? do they get a share of the RP money? are there hidden secret rewards? or is it just fun? let me know your theories

Well being a GM or any other staff position can give you a feeling of power so some people want to get that, you have influence over the game and some reputation. Another thing is that you can see some of the secrets of royals/updates in advance so it works for curious people.

You also get the ability to modify content and suggest new things which is nice and can help your own character and your friends/guild etc. You also become a part of the staff community and some made friends there which is an important reason.
You also get something to do when you're bored lmao


I don't know if these are the exact reasons here but when I was an admin in some forums for example these were the main reasons, though eventually I quit due to a lack of time.

on a side note: being on staff is a thankless voluntarily job, only people that genuinely want the server to be in a better place should apply...

They're secretly alien grad students trying to write their PhD thesis on human behavior in online games. The server is actually in a UFO sitting in low earth orbit.

 

Personally, I would like them to earn money, it doesn't seem fair to me that they are in charge of something very big for so long, in addition to reducing their hours of fun, they are forced to deal with all of us, in the long term it could become something of a job paid by them, but if they do it voluntarily as they say, that is absolutely awesome

 

Why does Staff do all of this for us?
I've been on staff for almost two years now, and to be frankly honest, I don't have a good answer to your question. I saw your question this morning and spent my driving time, and some of my working time on self-reflection, and decided to share some thoughts with you, others, and myself.

Doing staff duties just became natural to me, and became part of my routine. I check the team chat and forum often daily, to the point that made my girlfriend think that I am dating someone online.

What do they get?
Materially, nothing (except a small amount of RP I got to make my character look cuter uwu).

Spirituality, I feel pride in being a staff member, and I know that I am making a difference. I am happy to see staff as a team releasing content, developing fun stuff, considering community feedback carefully, reverting unpopular gameplay changes when changes don't meet our expectations, and making players' experiences better.

In addition, I feel pride in "justice being served", especially in removing those who purposely gain an unfair advantage over others. I've seen many great games ruined by hackers/rwter and I truly don't want royals to be one of them. I feel pride in overturning a ban (when appropriate) in the appeal section because I know that I just retain another player and probably made his/her day. The last thing I want is to see someone remain banned without sufficient evidence, and I know that feeling suck!

Personally, I am happy that I get to learn about the inner workings of game development and contribute to the creation of something that I am passionate about. Also unexpectedly, I get to sharpen my skills. Occasionally, I need to learn more about some new package/method/approach in order to achieve what I wanted, and sometimes I can apply the new skillsets to my 9-to-5 job. The same goes another way!

At what cost?
Time

Although I don't regret spending my time on staff duties, I am inevitably losing my gameplay time. It's sad to see the people on my buddylist/guild slowly going gray one by one, and I don't have the time to meet new people. Sometimes it could feel a little lonely in this game. Log in on my legits, stare at the screen, check out kerning city, and logoff. Luckily, I was able to join Tenacity and Rogue last year, and both guilds have some of the most wonderful people on the server. tho I sometimes still feel bad that I don't have enough time to chat with them

Therefore, the longer I am on the team, the more I appreciate how much time and energy Matt/Karven/Tim/Joong spent on this game. I guess their consistency and dedication are one of the reasons motiving me, and I want to be as impactful as them in making this game a better place

 

Why does anyone want to apply for something in the first place? They want it. But why?
You'll never know until the truth shows itself.
Like every game server, game itself or other, in most cases you need staff members to keep control and balance in the game.

The applications aren't always 100% accurate for sure, else the issues amongst/between or by a specific staff member against the server or people in community, wouldn't happen.

As for the rewards, my opinion is that normal players at least will never know fully, besides the information given by the staff.

I've come across staff, who I would not want to see or even hear about again or at least until they changed. (not speaking about MapleRoyals specifically)

But I've come across as well, staff who are just the most adorable people ever, and do their job for the love for the server, the game itself, the people. Probably a lot of other good reasons why they went for that application in the first place


I don't doubt though that, of all old school servers. This has been the best one. As far as old school maple servers go, I've definitely spent the most time in this one.

In the end, this is just my mere opinion. Just words basically, take it as you will.

You may be right, I only like half of the GMs, and there are others that I personally don't even want to see, reason, they are very closed to explanations, on the other hand, those that I admire is for their work, love and understanding, you can even talk with them. !!! cuak

If people got along with everyone on planet earth, earth would be a lovely paradise already. But I do feel like, there is never a stopping point for a person to defend themselves if they are not in the wrong.
Even if the responses and the actions have been done by the highest position staff members, and it seems logically unfair/misunderstood or even worse, just simply wrong. Don't feel helpless or hopeless.

I'm gonna be 29 this spring and I've only now realized that what other people say about me, think about me or decide to do about me in any scenario really.
It is not their belief that makes their "actions/words/ or ignorance right.

Might be something I might of added to "let it off your chest" but, i'm lucky to be alive after christmas/new year. And I feel like, from now on, I am the most important human in my life.

Heal myself, grow, become a better person and if bad things get in my way. Deal with them, move on, and if not possible, then those people just don't exist for me until possible again (insinuating more towards toxic people in our lives). My, yours and everyone's health and mental health is more important than anything we're even talking about.

Why do I do what I do?
-I genuinely do care for the well-being of this server and all of the community within it. When I see that something I have done has helped someone, it brings me true satisfaction and a big smile on my face. I’ve been a permanent player of MapleStory for over 18 years now and I can say I genuinely enjoy being something other than a player for the first time. I’m actually able to utilize all of the knowledge/experience I’ve gained over the years to make beneficial suggestions for everyone. I get to have a voice towards in game changes, I get to better understand the logic/reasoning behind changes, and I’m able to vocalize/answer players concerns, which are all reasons that make the position/workload worth it to me. Additionally, being a part of staff does give me something to do in my downtime when I’m bored (lol). Having power is the least of my concerns, as the position truly is thankless, the community is quick to judge harshly on us, and you have to be careful about any/everything you say. A downside is that you can’t really tell who is your real friend, who is a fake friend, and who just wants information out of you. It’s been a learning curve for me personally, but one that is manageable. I receive no $ for the work that I do, but I’ve gained a lot of experience that I can translate into real life. Overall being apart of staff allows me to have more of an impact on the game than I’ve ever had the opportunity of doing before, and I am truly grateful for the position I have. It might all sound clichè but I swear it’s the truth. I haven’t been this happy on MapleStory in many many years, and I look forward to the many more years to come!

 

As long as all the stuff does their work well and right as we all know that they are doing it as volunteering work is really good. If they cannot handle they should step down let others do it, and not letting all the ban appeals or other work to be delayed.
Next most importantly is hope there will be more transparency in GMs work, and not like all the past GMs that got perma ban.. That's so shameful and create a bad impression to the Maple Royals community. Community can think that the past GMs can corrupt or abused the game why i as normal gamer cannot corrupt and abused that game?

Why i talked about transparency because i got attacked by 2 GMs name Kai and Muff in the past. In the end the admin clear all the wrong of my false ban in game and my forum account.. This is really unreasonable.
