Anyways, what's wrong with our old system? If somebody is offended by anyone just make a post at forum and some GM will judge about it. It worked fine didn't it?

 

Didn't the original v62 have a filth filter that turned offensive words into ****?

Did it get turned off? Could it be turned back on and edited to include variations of spellings?

It serves the same purpose without the threat of punishment/bans/taking up an inordinate amount of GM time trying to figure out who said penis in all chat.

 

The problem with the cursing filter is that it also asterisked out (or just blocked) completely clean content too because perfectly acceptable words or combinations of words contained specific combinations of letters. Not sure about v.62 specifically, but when I was playing GMS, we couldn't say "document" "whisper me" or "you can always..." I have no idea if the filter could be programmed so that it *only* blocked specific whole words, but I'd hate to go back to the days where you couldn't have a normal conversation in Maple without the filter eating huge chunks of it.

 

Yeah I remember the whisper me thing. It was kind of like playing "find the swear words in what I just typed."

Still I prefer that to bans.

There are words that offend me that aren't on the bannable list (one specifically that was used in this thread). If someone uses them and it bothers me, I whisper or private message them and say something. Or I move on and don't worry about it.

 

You want to ban us for racist slurs? Fine. But for the love of God, WHY IS SEXUAL LANGUAGE BANNABLE WHEN IT'S NOT EVEN IN A SMEGA? Remember when the server was falling to pieces because the 100+ people online couldn't handle the word penis? Oh wait... Jesus Christ, you're gonna wanna go delete the whole "S*** Royalers Say" thread, even though it was one of the funniest threads we had. This is absurd.

 

The main issue I can see with this rule clarification is that a lot of people find it unacceptable, particularly the crackdown on sexual content.

I'm fine with keeping things clean in smega and all-chat, but what I'm not fine with is the server losing more players, and from a personal perspective, more of my friends quitting. If a move like this is going to drive a substantial amount of players away from the server, then I would far rather see a discussion and a poll on the subject and that we go with something that the majority can agree on.

Also, please can we have some clarification as to whether or not the crackdown on certain content also applies to forum posts?

I'm starting to wonder who this server is for. A lot of stuff is being implemented despite the players being against it.

Also this "clarification" is basically really vague word shitting. No offense John but I didn't understand half of it to be honest.

And OH THE IRONY giving GMs that broke the rule a clean slate.

Stop implementing things the majority of the people here are against!

 

I still think, banning should be done on context.
Context is all.
Otherwise there are so many other things that are potentially bannable.
Why stop at the N-word? What about swearing? Imagine if I just failed like 10x scrolls- and I go "FUCK YOU (at my item)", and some random person happens to be there and assumes I'm swearing at him- does that constitute as harassment?

IMO, they're all just words-it's the context that counts. I could go around calling someone a stupid black slave retardhead and be harassing them without the n word.

I feel like we're implementing a black and white rule because a minority of the players (who also happen to be the GMs) are offended by a word and its connotations- which is a personal POV.

There are offenses that have morally bad implications which merit punishment, and then there is being offended due to a personal belief. I personally think the two should not be conflated since
a) it doesn't help the community as well (I mean people were having fun..)
b)logically it doesn't really seem professional: it's equivalent to someone banning people who say the word fat because one is personally against its connotations.

Like Tobi said it's all about context, we can all replace penis with sausage an sooner or later you will be banned because of similar intent. And POV.

The thing with the n word is that the intent is actually GOOD. I can see it being offensive if people find it offensive, which is why report abuse is lovely. But the problem occurs when people use it as revenge, hence why you should just ask people to just stop. Whisper them "I dont like you using that word" and report them if they continue.

Why is everything in this server INSTA ban. Also sexual content is just absolutely rubbish. I've seen matt get humped by a freakin hog before. All of us can be immature sometimes, this is a kids game! We are in here to have fun, and fun usually comes intertwined with immaturity. We are not playing this game to be completely mature. I can see this as a problem if people are offended, but GMs are just snooping on conversations and banning.

Personally, things like "Penis" and "vagina" shouldn't be bannable, I'm pretty sure most of the people here are all 16+ and if there is anyone younger than 13 then they shouldn't be playing this game... like many people have said, they aren't offensive to anyone, although if some people spam sexually explicit words for no reason whatsoever then jail them till they realize how stupid they were being.

On the other hand, people should still be banned for racial slurs and such, but they should only be banned till after people talk to them and tell them to stop using such words in a polite manner. If those people still use the words after they've been talked too, then they still should be banned. That's why I never reported some people for saying the word "gay" or "***" even though I am, because 1) they were my friends 2) they didn't know that I was and 3) I never asked them to stop. This is just my two cents, I realize that most of this is pretty much a regurgitation of what many people have said, but please take this into consideration.

 

So if I'm sitting in FM with my fellow black nigerien friend, talking about the river Niger in the Republic of Niger, will we get banned?

CONTEXT​

 

For context and abuse reports- I'd say specialization- allocate GMs to deal with this specifically (that is, HR). I can think of three scenarios:
Scenario 1
Person A is taking to friend and says the n word
Person B is offended and reports Person A out of revenge

Solution: If the friend can provide an SS, person A gets off. If it's in a public place (like the fm) maybe a warning to be more discrete. Person B gets a warning to stop being an ass.

Scenario 2:
Person A is talking to friend and says the n word
Person B gets offended by the word and reports

Solution: Person B gets told to be more tolerant since the word wasn't directed at him. Also, as above: If it's in a public place (like the fm) maybe a warning to be more discrete.

Scenario 3
Person A is insulting Person B with the n word.
Person B gets offended by the insult and reports.

Solution: Three day ban for Person A due to harassment and the rules as stated

I think there should simply be a harrasement section on the forums if someone is stupid enough to harass someone to the point they report it on here then they should get that 3 days ban

I dont get it, why bring so much negative upon a server which is lacking something already, players are FM whoring so much already, Chris just quit because this was like too much of bad things happening ,we need to have moral boosts not the other way around..
Maplestory has always been a social game, most of us are playing because we met awesome people on this server or the previous server, and most of us will also stick to their friends and back them up..

First one leaves, then someone else follows.. Soon everyone will take off..
These aren't medieval times, you aren't gaining any respect by cutting off someones head, you just demotivate them and their companions...

 

Mentioning the n word

Okay, basically GM's should ONLY reply to report abuse threads, they should not be banning people themselves unless IT IS DIRECTED AT THEM. Then maybe they can file their own report abuse thread.

i.e. no stalking people and banning someone when they see the n-word being mentioned.

When someone says the N word there are four scenarios for all chat.

1) The person whom it was directed to is chill.
2) The person is offended, straight away reports. This should be dealt with a 1 day chat ban. However, should not be encouraged.
3) Person tells the N-word user he is offended and to stop.
3.1) N-word user apologises -> no issue.
3.2) N-word says something similar to "fuck off n-word"

During 3.2, the offended player should SS that he asked him to stop with that response, this should end up in a 3 day ban.

For Smegas, I think the n-word should be frowned upon, and result in a 1 day chat ban.

Agressive use of the n-word, like FUCK OFF N-WORD. Should result in a 3 day ban, if it is used as a word to harass people. In a SS with clear intent.

Sexual things, I think they should be exactly the same, besides point 2. You should not straight away report someone for saying "blowjob or penis".

Policing by context is easy on MapleStory. If there is no context to go off of, let them off with a general warning about how we prefer not to express that kind of language.

Understand how bad this is on the P.R. side of this server, and how the players, the thing this server is made for, the only reason it is still up, are really f**king annoyed with this bulls**t.

 

Personally, I don't like the use of racial or homophobic slurs in any context for any reason, and I will openly express my distaste to people who choose to use them even in casual ways.

That being said, the majority of the community seems to be ok with using these words and hearing them, so allow them (except perhaps in smegas).

Not making a big deal out of it will probably deter people from wanting to use them as much anyway, since the human instinct when told you cannot do something is to do it more.

And to add to this, I have never personally been offended by "normal" swear words or annoyed at usage of "sexual" terms unless it's extremely graphic...and in those instances I will either say something to change the subject, or simply leave.
