Providing some additional details for clarity as I am kinda involved in this. 1) Two players approached me via Discord DMs about the casino idea, which I explained wasn't against the rules after confirming the gambling/casino details (on the 17th and 22nd of February). 2) One of the individuals promoted the casino on megaphone (17th of February) that the casino was "GM Approved." He likely didn't realize I am a "Moderator" based on my Discord role. 3) He was subsequently approached by one of the GMs to cease using the term "GM Approved," as at that time, I had only mentioned to him that "this type of gambling is allowed (not against the rules)." 4) Later on, some GMs provided their input on the matter, and the Staff discussed the positives and negatives of such gambling (casino). 5) However, amidst the discussion, one of the individuals associated with the casino was discovered to be ban-evading and holding multiple forum accounts (the other individual might also be involved). My thoughts on the matter: Although I personally don't endorse gambling or similar activities (including drop games), there are no provisions in the Terms & Conditions that prohibit such in-game gambling behaviors, Staff would have further discussions on the matter. However, given that one of the individuals involved in the creation of the "casino" was found to be evading a ban, which suggests potentially illicit activities such as money laundering of the meso (probably gained illegally), the Staff will need to exercise additional caution regarding the idea of players running an unofficial casino. Hope this can clarify the current situation.
I appreciate the transparency Dave. This sort of information is always welcomed. I had a feeling that "GM Approved" comment might have had something to do with it. Cynn's previous post along with the 'meso laundering' complications make it pretty difficult to navigate this type of activity without players relying on 'trusted and well known' players in the community to host the Casino. I can't speak for others but I know when Asamu hosted the Casino I did think ' why haven't I seen this player before? '
It being a whole number doesn't really matter, the expected return for book services is higher than 10% on the investment, for the casino it was 10%. Insurances (e.g. book services) buy risk from their clients, casinos sell risk to their clients. Maybe it's worthwhile to say a bit more about book service math here. The expected return from a 70% book service charging 1.6x market price really is just about 1.6 - 1.43 = 17%, the 1.6 charged minus the 100/70 = 1.43 times the book price value that a 100% chance has. The best way to see the math behind the service is to tabulate the probability distribution. It starts with 70% chance to pass the first book, and if it fails (30% chance), then 70% to pass the next book and so on. You compound the probabilities and you get that the probably to need n books is going to be (0.7)(0.3^(n-1)). You can summarize things in a table like this which says things like "you get 60% of MW20 price as profit if the first book passes, this possibility accounts for an expected return of 42% of the book price" or "the possibility of passing at the third book accounts for a return of -8.82% of MW20 price". And if you sum all the weighted returns you get the total expected return of 17.14% and can calculate things like "the possibility of 3+ books failing accounts for an expected return of 0.1714 - 0.42 + 0.084 + 0.0882 = -0.0764 = -7.64% of book price". I think the idea of "potential 100%" that you are using is a bit blurry, I suppose the number of books used exceed the expected number of books to pass at that point, but I don't think that says much about the actual probability of passing. For 70% with two books it's 91%, for 50% with two books it's 75%... tldr the expected return of book services is 17% of book price for 1.6x 70% and 50% of book price for 2.5x 50%, i.e. 12% and 20% of service Anyway another cheater eats the dust, who's gonna run the next gambling venture???
I think mathematically you are correct. Considering other factors such as demand and supply for both services, I still think Casino is more profitable tho.
Make a map for pig racing and a portal in FM to get into the map. Make another NPC on the racing map for betting. There will be a timer for betting before the race starts and a timer during the race. If the timer for the race is up and no pig reaches the endpoint, everyone loses. Once the race starts, no one can bet until the race ends. The payout is 2x.
Building on this, you could make it a pure money sink, and have people buy tokens, and do betting with these tokens, and then these tokens could be traded for a special shop (Similar to Teamwork tokens) Especially if you include gimmicky 'chance items', scrolls, etc. Hell if you built a Casino map. There's some maps you could make around it with some basic spawns like. Slot Machine, Pachi Balrog, Some of the coke monsters (That aren't as obvious like Coketump Lite & Coke Golem which you could rename to be the drinks in a casino and the bouncers) https://strategywiki.org/wiki/MapleStory/Event_monsters
hell yeah henny derby. also omok tourney npc in the lounge (ty again @Inugami). all in-game winnings should be taxed IMO
Currently we do not plan to add a casino style content. If we do in the future we will reconsider this thread. Until then, thanks for your feedback!
