I'm of the opinion that these names should be disallowed unless there's a way to properly hide their names or block them. Even then, it's still iffy. It's not uncommon to see people in various games using vulgar names that then try to stir up drama or cause controversy. A recent example for me would be players pretending to be a certain origin/background being rude to everyone around them, intentionally directing hate towards the group. Also, I personally wouldn't want someone with an offensive name in my party, buddy, guild, alliance chat, event messengers, smegas, server notices, etc. showing up while I'm playing in a public place IRL or around children. Where would the line be drawn? A player with names like "PissOnAFlag", "IFuckYourMom", or "CutMyWrists" could trigger past traumas for people and I'd prefer to protect them over someone having fun with a stupid name. I'd also imagine it's not terribly difficult to moderate over time since the pool of options shrinks each time a player tries to come up with something new. Exceptions to this are names that are purely just brainrot that wouldn't hurt anyone. I still wouldn't enjoy interacting with these names, but they wouldn't be on my shit list. (Examples: TigOlBiddies, BitchNuggets, MyShitStinks)

I've been sitting here very neutral. I'm trying to figure out my own internal logic. Between having a place to distract/relax and censorship. (I suggest some uncomfortable names below so viewer discretion is advised) From a game perspective, it removes the sort of idea that we're roleplaying. No parent would name their kid: "Pantydroopas" But drawing the line becomes very hard to objectify and especially in the Royals community boundaries are VERY hardcore tested down to the letter. An earlier example BowJob, has a sexual connotation is that okay, it's archer coded? We can compare that to KumBucket, is this a Spongebob reference? A Sex Reference a combo? Since it isn't related to Maple should it not be allowed? What about Fetishes if we allow ISuckToes (Sorry Andy) should we allow ShitOnUrFace, HentaiHarry, MidgetMike, TimkIsSexy ? What if I change that last one to TimKissExY Now instead I'm asking why Tim would kiss his ex. Where is the line and how does it get defined. Can I claim ignorance? I think we can all agree that when it's meant to be offensive to groups or individual people it's a no go IE: There was a bunch of reports of a character someone made called KewJiller But I know I submitted a report on a character named FUUUCKYOUALL and the logic was "it's fine since it's not targeting a specific group or person" Realistically it's not always about the name, it's down to two main things. 1. Is the name meant to be shocking/provoking/Call attention away from the game significantly? 2. Does this create discomfort for other players. I don't have the right solution, who am I to take away someone's fun, but I know that I've rolled my eyes hard, and even in the timely example have referred to him as "Mr. Bucket" during a VL run. Jokingly maybe there is a reasonable alternative. The player can keep the character if they record themselves calling up their grandma and telling them their new MapleRoyals character and if she thinks it's good then they can keep it.
There is already an ign filter in place. I couldn't name my storage mule spitithrope cause it has "tit" in it, but you can name yourself something stupid like kumbucket. If you have a stupid or vulgar ign, power to you, but i don't want to party with you or call you by it. Where is the line, especially with offensive collaquialisms in other languages? Let players choose stupid names, avoid playing with them if you think theyre stupid, don't allow offensive names.

just out of curiosity, and I am specifically referring to kumbucket’s case, why cant you just call him “bucket”? In fact you can even call him “kum” because its a very commonly used word. In fact iirc its a brand somewhere in the world for stationery. And if Singaporeans/Malaysians have the surname “Gan”, is this not allowed too? Because for people in China this can arguably be offensive. Edit: I want to add in that I know he said something that crosses the line to a GM which is why he got banned. I am not disputing his ban I would just like to know what the issue is with his ign since it hurts no one and he has had it for so long.
For Kumbucket specifically, yes, I could simply call him "Bucket" instead. However, my point was never about whether a particular IGN can be shortened or worked around. Rather, I was trying to explain why I personally am not a fan of explicit sexual names in games. For example, "Kumbucket" can be shortened to "Bucket", but what about names such as "Vagina", "CumSlut", or "BigBlackDick"? At some point, it becomes less about finding alternative ways to address the player and more about whether such names contribute positively to the community environment in the first place. As for words such as "Kum" or surnames such as "Gan", I think context matters. Personally, I would look at the IGN as a whole rather than focusing on a single word. A legitimate surname or word from another language is very different from an IGN whose overall theme appears to be a sexual reference. Regarding the point that the IGN has existed for a long time, I can understand why some players may find that frustrating. However, I do not think the length of time an IGN has existed should be used as evidence that it complies with the rules. At most, it raises questions about consistency of enforcement. Ultimately, I am not saying everyone must agree with my view. I simply prefer character names to be something that can be comfortably used in everyday conversations, guild activities, screenshots, forum posts, and official interactions without having to work around explicit sexual references.

Anyway, here's my take on censorring non-English names and non-English words in general. Regardless, my point is where do we draw the line? Is it at what we find inappropriate in English? Or what we think English people find inappropriate (in English)? Or both? Can it be inappropriate in another Language? Can something completely normal in one language be censored because in another it is offensive? People will find infinite ways to write inappropriate names. How about (f.e.) phonetically latinized Russian/Mandarin/Hebrew? Are we going to ban every interpretation? Every i, I, l, 1 variation? Can I call myself GatoNegro? Or is that too close to a misspelling of Dutch "Neger"? TengereHans? RegenWolk? DieRegen (lol) Are people from Niger allowed to say they are? If so, may I name myself USAHunter DutchHunter or NigerHunter? If KankerMage is an issue Is MelkkanKerk also a problem? Kanker and the verb Kankeren are both normal Dutch words. Do you think thats offensive? Do you think we find that offensive? Do you understand the differences between "Kankercel" - "Kankercel" - "Kankeren op een cel"? (Yes, the first two are written and can be pronounced the same) Is Wakker, Wankel or Wenker a misspelling of Wanker? Is Gadverdamme ("Ew!" (With disgust emotion)) a misspelling of Godverdomme (God Damnit)? Do you think God Damnit is offensive? Can my personal name be Ciska? Can I name myself GoedeDag or are those to close phonetically to something funny in Ukrainian? Can someone think SjaalOmjeNek is potentially a reference to hanging yourself or is it the first part phonetically close enough to Hebrew that you won't notice? Is Lammerder just bad grammatica or am I hiding some French word? Btw, "Dick" used to be a common Dutch name, would it be an issue if I'd introduce myself? would you be fine with calling me by my name? They can be reported and judged by case. Sure, if someone's IGN is NegerJager. They were not directly translating the very cool IGN NigerHunter. They knew what they were doing. Sure, make them change their name. I've seen some Royals IGNs out there that would get you not just banned but vaporized anywhere outside of 4chan, so I really don't think we need to be any more permissive than we already are with this.
If you are upset by reading words on the internet to the extent you feel compelled to complain about it, I think you should just turn your computer off, unplug it, take it to the tip, and throw it away. Then go and do something else and leave the rest of us alone.
People pushing 30 or even 40 discussing igns being offensive and if they should be allowed on a private server is kinda funny to me.
