Welcome Jeremy. I have the same MS background as you do and the nostalgia as well! According to my tastes, the experience rate/drop rate is actually just spot on (I originally looked for a 5x exp/ 1x drop preBB server). The server does have a few errors here and there, but Matt is extremely attentive and responds quickly to them (props to Matt). I hope you find MapleRoyals an enjoyable experience as much as I do.
