    Hi,

I have seen a lot of reports about defaming lately, and for that matter I'm writing this thread. If you get defamed 7+ times. Okay, I feel your report but some people do it after being defamed 3 times. Which in my opinion is too little to call it real harassment.

So my suggestion would be to just return the fame that was lost that day. Why? Because this would save a lot of time AND drama. Both of those are unnecessarily spend, which I would like to see fixed.

So rather than making this a report thread, making this a ''suggest for fame back'' thread. But ONLY and ONLY if those characters are famed 3 or more times. By the same individual.

You might counter argue with me about this costing too much time, but I genuinely believe that having all this drama, trying to figure out who is right and wrong, takes at least twice the amount of time.

Having people actually having the need to act so childish and defame using several characters in the first place is the problem.
If anything those characters should have a permanent fame/defame block.

I think the problem is people putting so much stock in a pixelated number going up or down on their screen that they feel the need to take time out of their own day and the staff's day to write a report and then expect said report to be rectified immediately. Other than randomly trading fame and quest rewards, I don't really mess with it so I may be highly biased, but I feel like there are so many more important things in game that people can focus on...or even outside of the game  haha.

Different people have different priorities. People always call MapleStory a social game, yet I rarely socialize with people in-game and just grind away in my boredom. So, for people to feel this same way but about their fame isn't surprising. If they consider this an important element of their gameplay and it is being ruined by another player then I would call it harassment. Just my opinion. :)

I don't think defame should count as harassment AT ALL. It's a freaking number attached to your name. Someone defames you? Suck it up or go defame them back! I don't see why we are even entertaining these trivial reports and giving bans. It doesn't affect your enjoyment of the game, your leveling & training capabilities, no one is KSing you. What a waste of time.

There are quests and equips that require a certain amount of fame - presumably Nexon's way of trying to encourage people to socialize, be nice to people and get famed for it. For someone that's relatively new here, or pretty quiet and largely keeps themselves to themselves, it probably is an issue if they go below the required amount of fame for their equips.

I know defaming is part of Old School MapleStory nostalgia but there's times when I wonder if it would make things a whole lot simpler if the ability to lower someone's fame was simply removed... >_>

Yeah pretty dumb rule in regular Maple Story back in the day you got defamed because you were an immature 12 year old, a jerk or for scamming. If you pissed someone off then the whole guild would defame someone. Now on this server you go and defame a notorious scammer like Zico or Netalia a couple times to show people that they aren't trustworthy and you can get banned for three days.

But isn't the point of fame in the first place to be a kind of value set on you by your peers? If you're a jerk and people don't like you and defame you... it's an accurate portrayal. So really, it's not harassment... it's utilizing the fame function the way it's meant to be used.

The issue with that is multiple defames coming from a single person. While it's just my opinion, I would assume that the fame function set in place was never intended to be abused by characters with multiple accounts.

If someone has 10 characters to fame/defame on, and another person has only one, why should someone else's fame count more just because they have more accounts than another person? In that regards, it turns into a less-accurate portrayal when someone can defame you 10 times because you were subpar in a LPQ.

Edit: However, I'm not saying that people should run off and submit an abuse report every time they get defamed 3 times. Again, in my opinion, that's being extremely petty. I'm willing to bet that not every person who submits a report regarding defaming is actually using that fame for equips, and they probably have buddies and/or alt accounts that have unused fame that could undo the damage, and they can move on instead of filing an entire report about it.

That's true. I guess I have a limited scope on the whole thing. I couldn't imagine going through the trouble of logging in, traveling, logging out, and repeating that process multiple times for something super basic like that. I would assume that if someone went through that much trouble that it would be for a very good reason, warranting that many defames.

But there's a good chance that I just have too much faith in other people and they're more ridiculous than I previously assumed.

It is ridiculous, and like Andreas said, people acting so childish to feel the need to defame on multiple characters is the issue. Many times people don't have reason good enough to write home about when they defame on multiple characters.

The same could be same about mass faming as well so how come that's okay? If mass faming is allowed then mass defaming should be too.

Except in 9/10 situations people aren't mass defaming for the sake of not letting you wear certain equipments, they do it out of hate, frustration, or revenge. Look at every defame report that's been filed on this server, all of them are for reasons, how good or bad those reasons may be is not of importance, the point is mass defames don't happen without a reason. Rather than taking defames at face value, we should look at the behaviors that cause them, because that's the bigger issue. If we remove the ability to defame, we're essentially adding a type of censorship into the game which is something I 100% do not agree with. Fame may be an arbitrary number and it is, but the thought behind it goes much further than that. It could mean either "thank you" or "fuck you", both of which is acceptable under the right context.

Next time you get mass defamed, think about why you got it instead of pleading on the forums for a ban. Regardless if it's fair or not, just know that you did do something to trigger it.

It's funny that you've mentioned this. I've joked about with my friends and wondered what would happen if say, I preferred defame and someone decided to fame me on three of their characters.

More on topic though, I totally agree that removing the fame feature probably would not the best course of action for this.

To be honest I completely forgot about the 'dark' colored versions of items which required 20 fame or so...
Rather than removing the option to defame - I think removing fame requirements from items would be a better route, as some people like to collect defame. This would render fame a completely non-required component of the game.

Fame another imaginative number people actually seem to care about.
    My two cents are:
    • Fame is irrelevant, as long as the player has above 20 (The minimum for certain equips)
    • Defaming/faming someone can be done without a reason needed. Its a personal choice.
    • People get way to upset over getting defamed. Some actually react really upsettingly upset.
    • If there are people having 100+ fame-mules, having multiple DEFAME-mules should be allowed.
    • People tend to become really upset over defames. A fame costs around 1m a piece. Would you really send someone to ban-hell for three days over 3-10(average) millions?
    • Are you accomplishing anything extra by getting said person banned? Do you get your fames back? Its not like he/she can defame you again, he/she'll have to wait a month anyways.
    • Are you spending more of your time, and a GMs time with a report than the said millions to rebuy the fames back are worth?

I like this idea! =) There's various dark equips that have a fame requirement to wear, one or more Blackbull quest that requires fame, and I know in GMS/EMS there was something you couldn't do if you had more than a certain number of negative fame - I just don't recall clearly what it was or the amount of negative fame required for that to happen. It might have affected your ability to set up an FM store... really unsure. I'd prefer that fame/defame was purely a social/personal goal element of the game.

As for my suggestion about removing the ability to defame - I wasn't being entirely serious and I wouldn't realistically expect anyone to support that idea! It just dawned on me that the absence of this function would mean less hassle all round for players and for staff, but at the same time, defames are an important part of oldschool Maple nostalgia.

Tbh, I think that Defaming can be considered harrassment. BUT the GMs needs to look into it instead of just banning someone for mass defame..
For example: You were scammed, the scammer isn't going to get banned or any sort of punishment because GMs don't take part in 'personal matters'. So the only thing one can do is defame lol.. And then if that person reports the defamer person.. They will pay the price intead lol..

Another example: Some guy randomly defamed me in the FM. And when I asked him, he said," Just." So I defamed him 3 times and told him," Just." as well. He said he was going to report me for mass defame. I told him tat I had SS too. BUT if he had reported me, I'd be banned. I could have just defamed him once too, but he messed with a RANDOM person, for no reason so it was a way to telling him to not f**k with other ppl for no reason..
