Greeting and salutations Royalers! Today I'd like to know what the heck a VPN is. I see it become an issue with players that live in the east but I don't truly grasp what it means or the difference between a VPN account. Decided to put this here because it's more of a curiosity and I'd like to ask the community instead of bothering the Gm's. Thank you for helping to remove my ignorance on this matter!
VPN is basically a private internet inside of the public internet. There are some that you subscribe to (TunnelBear), and some that are public. It's kind of an optional mid-point between a LAN and a WAN network. You can connect to a VPN in Japan if you're in the USA, but to all websites and services you use will see the JPN IP of the VPN instead of your US IP. This effectively make web services think you're browsing from Japan instead of the USA.This helps get around pesky country blocks and IP bans, and sometimes even speed issues. VPNs can be used for a variety of things, including data protection, location spoofing, data privacy, and more. Hackers love VPN's because they share an IP with thousands of other people, making them pretty much untraceable, hence why they're banned here. For my personal use I use a VPn to access some Japanese websites that are restricted to JPN citizens (for some reason...?). At my office we use a VPN between 2 office locations across state lines so that it would appear that all the computers on the VPN are actually all located in the same building. So If i got out of state, I can connect to the office VPN and use my work network as if I'm actually sitting at my desk even though I'm laying in the sand on the beach. There's more to VPN's then that, but those are the basics. Questions?
So in a practical sense businesses use a VPN in order to communicate information between the businesses? Does a VPN work for all country specific websites? Or does it only for work for Japan?
Also since Royals now requires a private VPN does that mean that people have to pay for their own VPN now?
You don't require a VPN at all to play MapleRoyals, I think you misunderstood the announcement. One of the only scenarios you'd need a VPN to play MapleRoyals would be if your country restricts your access to the game, in which case we ask of you to use a private VPN instead of a public one. If you use a public VPN your IP address will be shared with many others who use the same VPN IP, meaning if one another gets banned using that VPN IP everyone else using that VPN IP also gets banned. That is why we ask of players to please use a private VPN if you have to use one, to avoid us having to unban around 20-50 players each time someone hacks or cheats using a public VPN.
