Lately both Maple Global and Rien closed cause of Nexon and they were both pre-bb servers. Royals is a lot more popular than both of them so do you think Nexon would try to close it too?
I choose to believe Royals will not close down. Cuz I still have not reached end game YET!!! )VEWON ER*U@$N#*Y#)P@!~}PO VPQ
Why were they taken down though? Was it a copyright dispute? If that's the case, I don't think Nexon can touch Royals because everything is 'New Source' and not the original code Wizet wrote... But then again, maybe the sprites are copyrighted? The maps? The dialogue? I don't know how copyright works
It was a DMCA complaint. And according to them operating any private server of maple violates Nexon's right and is illegal by itself so the code doesn't matter.
This does seem like an issue. I was surprised that Rien received a copyright complaint and we didn't. Shouldn't Nexon target the most populated private servers first? It would be great to know if we had any precautions around the whole copyright thing. I do hope it never comes down to that though
Sounds to me, then, that there's no difference between Rien and Royals, in Nexon's eyes. I would imagine they're trying to get all private servers shut down right now, and maybe they've already been trying for a long time. But Nexon's probably got to wade through a ton of legal dreck to get the job done. Royals has certainly lasted a long time, and it would be sad if it were taken down out of the blue, but in the end, Nexon doesn't win. Servers that provide a nostalgic Maplestory experience will always exist, despite Nexon's efforts to close them. And I think it's better to have fun here on Royals for as long as we have it, and be prepared to move on if it closes. I suppose that's just the life we have to live.
This server is a bit different. I don't know a whole lot about those 2 servers but I do know some servers try to be modern GMS servers, or serve same functionalities as they do, also including all the class types etc. This is a replication of a time Nexon has long forgotten de wei of, and even there "Pree BB" servers or what ever they are actually called, are absolutely nothing like what it used to be. I personally believe that this server would be way more difficult for them to actually take down, since we dont replicate everything they do. But I could be completely wrong. I just hope for the best!
Apparently, NEXON doesn't want discussion about Oldschool Maple servers on their forums (http://forums.maplestory.nexon.net/discussion/6835/code-of-conduct#latest). They have received suggestions to create an official old-school server but decided to not do it, and if I understand it correctly, this is a final decision - that's why they won't allow any more discussion about it. Therefore, servers like MapleRoyals are not directly competing with NEXON, as the player-base is totally different. Should NEXON see, however, that some (a majority) of Royals players are the type of people who would be willing to pay for the current MapleStory, I believe they would seek to shut Royals down, as Royals are "stealing their customers". And, if they want to shut Royals down, I believe they can do it easily. After all, NEXON is a big company with legal rights. Why they choose to take other private servers down, I don't know. Well should Royals go down, I would not for anything in the world start play GMS again. Not even if I got paid for it! Eeek!
From what I great, Global got shutdown because it was trying too much to look like an official server and Rien got shutdown because it was part of Lumiere Network. They were about to release another server called Nautilus that I had hopes for due to its unique game version, but the Founder’s Pack they had was stupid imo and probably made it too noticeable that money made was being made even if it was to keep the server alive. So with targeting Nautilus, they took down Lumiere Network as a whole.
Might have something to do with the server moving to Russia. I know certain countries have very different laws when it comes to private server hosting. Pretty sure in Finland for example, it's perfectly legal to host a private server as long as it's a non-profit. You just need a Finnish citizen to sign up the non profit. Other countries don't actually enforce copy right laws at all.
We've had a fair share of copyright complaints (both real and fake) that we've had to deal with over the years. One of our servers did also get a DMCA from Nexon at the end of December, which was the reason for the web server change at the New Year and subsequent game server changes, so I believe we were the first private server to receive one. We don't have any plans to shut down server operations any time soon and will continue to mitigate copyright complaints where we can.
They pick the battles they can win. It's the same reason my Highschool got sued for our mascot (Based off an extinct tribe of Native Americans) and the Washington Redskins are left untouched, despite their name/mascot being significantly more offensive. Rien and other servers are smaller and are more likely to cave to pressure from legal maneuvers/unable to properly fight it/don't have the money or know how to avoid it.
I would understand if Global got shut down since they're basically replicating what was GMS like 7 to 8 years ago. Not just the server, but the damn website as well (which I must say, is quite a job well done because it brought back so much feels when I visited it). As for Rien, kind of a surprise. Not sure if they actually tried to mitigate it, or that they're tired of managing it and just so received a DMCA, so decided to use it as an excuse to shut it down. I mean, it's entirely possible though.
I had the same thought about their intentions. If they decided to close their server, it would be a lot easier to say that they did it because they received a copyright complaint rather than saying they no longer want to maintain the server. It would be a lot easier for their players to accept it with no backlash on them. Not saying they didn't receive the copyright claim, but you're right about the possibility of them using it as an excuse to shut down rather than fighting the claim or such.
I like how they have slided drugs, drinking, sexual activities in there with private servers - Controversial, illegal (pirating, drugs, other illicit etc.), adult (drinking, sexual activities and references) and Terms of Use-breaking (hacking, glitching, account trading, private servers, etc.) discussions are not allowed.
The original mascot was created by a local Native American man when the school was opened. What the article leaves out is the Wompanoag "assimilated" the Nauset tribe, but it occurred through civil war and forcing the survivors to join them. So the irony is claiming the mascot perpetuated violence (and racism) when the ones who filed the suit were the ones with the bloody history, and not the Nauset tribe. I digress though.. I'm sure the longer the server is around, the more Nexon will push it, and as Emo said, we're here for good time, not a long time... and I don't know how i'd explain to my kids someday that I play this is we're still here in 10 years Maybe Nexon will go bankrupt and eventually leave us free to do whatever. One can hope.
