How to Horntail without graphical glitches closing your client

    There are cases where NVIDIA cards run fine like Mansiut's however as you mentioned there's also luck involved. Mecheez for instance runs NVIDIA and survives the glitches 'most of the time'. I haven't been able to narrow down which cards or other related specs are having these Horntail issues simply because I don't own more than two NVIDIA cards hehe.

    Hello, the Gr2D problem has to do with your display hardware acceleration settings. You can check these when you right click your desktop and go to properties:

    then click advanced, it will pop up a new window, browse to the Troubleshoot tab there and increase your Hardware acceleration to something like this

    If your mapleroyals still wont run in the windows 98 / Me compatibility mode try running the Setup.exe in your mapleroyals folder (it will look for a screen refresh rate and possibly edit your monitor Hertz to make mapleroyals visible for you).
    Let me know if you're still unable to play, there's a few more things to try to get Hardware acceleration to work if this didn't help.

    I'm pretty sure you should be able to complete a similar setup on parallels for Mac. I'm afraid I can't really help you in this aspect because the only Apple devices I own are my iPhone and my iPad. If you really can't figure it out I suggest shooting an inbox message to @Zoink and inquire him on how he successfully does his Horntail runs, he has a Macbook with parallels running on it and he's never DCed from a graphical error.

    As to all of you I updated the Windows XP download link to the one I used in my example screenshots. I intended to use the official one from the Microsoft site for this guide but I'm afraid it didn't work for most of you, hope that helps!

    I run an nvidia card on my desktop as well and have succesfully gone through 2 runs with no issues, however I do get issues at zak if I don't gfx throughout. I regularly gfx through HT just to be safe, but have yet to d/c. Fingers crossed.

    installing royals on my new parallels XP VM right now. I'll be able to say more about how well it does/doesn't work in about 12 hours. I'll try to zak tonight to see if I notice any improvements or issues there.

    Let me just give a small explanation to mac users who want to HT (nothing in dept):
    Unfortunately, VMware fusion has stopped working with Royals on macs since the ToT/Ulu patch. However, Parallels, a very simular piece of software can do the same thing. E.g. emulating windows xp for a smooth sailing bossing experience without a chance of non server sided d/c's. Parallels works very easily and is very simular to VMWare Fusion in its use, so Tim's guide largely applies to Mac users too.

    Did a HT run today using parallels and XP - never realized quite how poorly things were running on windows 7 until I had something to compare it to, and it's definitely nice to not have to reboot my PC.

    A+ for this guide!

    So I kind of have the same problem as Ein does. I don't think I have a NVIDIA graphics card, but idk I've never really had that much of a graphics problem, but I wanted to use the VMWare thing anyway. Sooo.... I get the same thing Ein is getting. The GR2D failure thing:

    I guess it's time to dive into some deeper settings in order to make this work for you. There's a number of things you can try to get this to work so lets start with a checklist:
    - Are you running the MapleRoyals application (not the shortcut) in compatibility mode for Windows 98 / Me?
    - Have you tried to run setup.exe (the program that asks you to press Alt + H once you see the message)?
    - Are you sure you have all the files / do you see ''Gr2D_DX8.dll'' on your folder?
    - Is your hardware acceleration turned up to the maximum?

    If yes is the answer to these questions these are the things you can try next:

    1) Checking your dxdiag.
    Go to Start and click on Run. Write ''dxdiag'' in the Run window and click ok.

    The first time you do this on your VM you might get a message asking you to connect to the internet to check some windows credentials for a more detailed result but we don't need this for our purpose so just say no to that. it will then open your DirectX Diagnostic Tool which will look something like this:

    The first step here is to double check if you have a DirectX Version of 8 or higher, in my case its 9.0c and if you used the same windows link as I did you should have the same.
    Next up go to the second tab that says DirectX Files. If the Notes say: - No problems found. we can move on, if it displays a problem please post that here so we can work from there.

    If we're still sailing along smoothly lets go to the next tab called 'Display'. In order for GR2D to work the Direct3D Acceleration has to be enabled.

    You can try testing your DirectDraw and Direct3D if you are unable to enable these functions. If they're still 'grayed out' like the AGP Texture-Acceleration on my screenshot you have to move on to the next step and navigate back here once that's done.

    2) Editing your monitor settings.
    In case the steps above are all ok or if you're unable to Enable your Direct3D acceleration you can try the following:
    Go to your desktop, right click it and go to properties, click the Settings tab here.

    If you have two monitors attached to your PC like I do make sure only one is selected for your VM. Now click on Advanced to get to the following pop up:

    Click on the Adapter tab and go to 'List All Modes' there. You can try to select different modes and repeat the steps from '1)'.

    You can also go to the Troubleshoot tab here and check if your Hardware acceleration is set to full.

    If that option is still unavailable or 'grayed out' your Direct3D is most likely still not working.
    The next thing you can do is checking out the Properties button in the Adapter tab.

    You can troubleshoot on the General tab if your device isnt working properly or look for other drivers in the Driver tab to get your Direct3D acceleration to work in your dxdiag.

    3) Editing your virtual machine settings.
    If none of the above worked after some retrying and changes you can try to change your VM settings and start at the beginning. To do that you first have to shut your VM down and go back to your VMware Player screen. Instead of Play virtual machine you should click the option below it to Edit the virtual machine settings. You will be back at the window you first used to set your VM up:

    Go to the Display option and make sure that 'Accelerate 3D graphics is checked.

    If it wasn't you can 'ok' these changes now and restart your VM to try the previous steps again. If it was already checked and you just can't get your VM to run MapleRoyals try changing one of your VM Processors settings, especially the ones at the Virtualization engine menu.

    That's about all I can think of. There are some miscellaneous things you can still try if none of this worked for you and you can probably google your way to an answer that works for you if none of this had any effect. Keep in mind your issue most likely has something to do with accelerated graphics, Direct3D and your display settings. The final resort would be:
    - trying to install a different version of DirectX
    - running MapleRoyals in a different compatibility mode
    - installing a different Windows XP (if you haven't used the same link I provided)
    - crying in a corner and reconsidering your life choices
    - googling: gr2d maplestory

    For those having the Gr2D issue, literally all I had to do was install vmware tools. I changed no other settings anywhere (other than changing the desktop resolution to 800x600). Its in the first post of this thread, but perhaps the step was missed by some.

    Well I noticed my VMware did not have the tools installed so yes after I got the tools it worked. Thanks alot for all replies trying to solve the issue.

    Jinxed myself. 2 d/cs now within 10 runs.. Once was when I clicked "party invite" button to reinvite someone to the party during tail. Second time today was just random, black screen then client closed with no error. Trying VM ware now...and going on another HT run once I'm all set up. Hopefully this works. Is it normal for it to feel "slow" compared to my regular pc? I mean I guess it is just 1 gig of ram vs 8.

    Also for anyone like myself who tends to use ctrl + alt at the same time for skills (Such as jump + FJ), you can do this to change it to cltr shift alt instead:

    1. Open the preferences file in a text editor.

    The file is located in one of the following locations:

    ◦ %AppData%\VMware\preferences.ini

    ◦ ~/.vmware/preferences

    2. Add the following lines to the file:

    pref.hotkey.shift = "true"
    pref.hotkey.alt = "true"
    pref.hotkey.control = "true"

    pref.hotkey.disableExitFullScreenOnHotkeyRelease
    pref.hotkey.disableHotkeyDelete
    pref.hotkey.disableHotkeyEscape
    pref.hotkey.disableHotkeyInsert
    pref.hotkey.leftAlt
    pref.hotkey.leftControl
    pref.hotkey.leftShift
    pref.hotkey.rightAlt
    pref.hotkey.rightControl
    pref.hotkey.rightShift

    This combination sets the hot keys to CTRL + ALT + Shift . Other settings yield different combinations.

    3. Save the file and restart the Remote Console.

    I dced 1 time out of 2 running with nvidia card and gfxing every 3-5mins.

    Went through every run i attended with my XP virtual machine. Little lag but as long as it doesnt dc its fine 0:)

    I died from lag on VMware... lol. @Kaizoku I have 8 gigs of ram on my computer, running windows 7 in classic mode (aka no Aero theme).. Should I give vmware 2 gigs of ram perhaps? I was at arm and had some visual lag, next thing I know I had died. @_@

    You can try giving your VM more ram but it wont have a lot of effect since Windows XP and Maplestory use around 40% of my 1 GB CPU (peaking at 50%) so about 500MB. Playing on VMware feels slightly delayed and has freezing lagspikes when the server lags so it does take some time to get used to. You could play some other content than HT to get a better feel for it I suppose.

    this doesnt work for me. i cant get the setup.exe of the iso file to download windows XP because it "compatibility issues". i tried changing it to everything (xp, vista, 7, 8, 98) but nothing works. Because i cant download XP from the iso file setup.exe, i cant get the VMware player to create a new virtual machine. HELP!! D:

    I'm not sure what you're trying to say. The VMware setup and the Windows XP are separate downloads. You don't use one to download the other. There are two links to file locations in the guide, one for VMware and one for the Windows XP iso. One you have both you have to browse your computer and locate the Windows XP iso file that you downloaded to load it in the VMware Player. You have to wait for it to finish downloading though.
