Character Name: CauseReasons Last thing you did: Shop Glitch Why do you think you got banned?: Shop Glitch. Ban message when attempting to log in: Glitch Abuse What GM banned you (optional): Timk Mostly posting out of curiosity. Got a 7 day ban for the shop glitch abuse rather than the 3 day that everyone else seems to be getting handed. I'd assume this is because I blatantly did it for sh*ts and giggles and possibly Tim noticed my forum post as well, but felt like posting an appeal just in case. Just as a note: Not asking for a full unban, and I will not reuse the glitch. I'm was aware of the possible consequences and was prepared to accept them for a bit of fun as I've been less active lately anyways. Simply wanted a clarification in policy and, if you so please, a fix on the ban length. This comes partly because of all of the misc. reports coming in lately. As the community continues to grow, we will naturally see more and more reports, but I also noticed a severe decrease in the general severity of the reports as well as an unusually high amount of backlash against many GM decisions. With the smaller more tight-knit community before, it was easier to let the little things pass and settle most cases ourselves, but with all the new players, I feel I'm often seeing edge-cases being reported where either GM's questionably should intervene, or whether they are legitimate reports at all. I mean someone just got reported for getting called a number... At this point, I'm admittedly either rambling because I'm banned and bored or curious because I do browse the Report/Appeal forums a lot and would like a clear understanding of the rules for some of these more....interesting... cases. TLR: Got a 7 day ban for shop abuse. Probably my fault but just wondering. Also have you seen some of these reports lately? I mean c'mon. From the Achievement/Failure threads:
Also, considering that there is now a no-overlapping policy on shops now I guess I can reveal the principal by which shop glitches occur: From my testing, I've discovered there are two checks while opening a shop: (1) A box-check + character check when you initially click your shopkeeper in your inventory. This first one checks your character state, (position, jumping, skills, etc) as well as a shop-sized box around your character to ensure that there are no NPCs, portals, or other conflicting objects within the area which the box should be opened. (2) A severely less strict character check when you click OK from the large info-prompt which actually opens your store. This second check assumes multiple variables have already been checked. While this one still checks some character states (whether you're on a ladder seems to be the only one I can remember) it ignores others such as being mounted. This particular case is not relevant to the glitch, just an interesting note. The jump glitch and the one shown above derive from the fact that there is no box check during this second phase. Or rather, the box check only encloses your character model. Because of this, it only checks whether you are standing directly upon an NPC or portal. The jump glitch and the one shown above abuse this fact in the second check in order to open shops in less conventional spaces. The fix for this may be as simple as moving some of the code from the first check into the second one. Considering that much of what I've learned cannot be ascertained from the jump glitch, I figured it was possible that the GMs were not aware of this. On another note: This also explains why the other overlap glitch worked. Because an NPC is not created until you actually open your shop, if two people reach the shop window (in which they can input items) without opening the shop itself, there is no longer a check. This is why there is only one way that players can overlap their shop NPCs.
We've been exploring the store 'glitches' to ensure we fix them all for the new source. With the new rule in place for the current game I have reduced your ban to 3 days like everyone else.
Thanks very much for your help! It looks like the "can't reply to your own thread within 24 hours" issue is solved!
