I did some quick searching and the last feedback threads on this topic were from 2017, a bit after new source came out. I believe this issue is a tad bit different to the more generic "feel" feedback thread on set-up that was stickied on Feb of this year. Having the game auto-patch instead of having to re-download the entire set-up would be very convenient and I presume would also be faster too. I know there are higher priority issues to tackle, but this is a change that would positively affect every member of this community since we all have to re-download the entire set-up every patch. (or twice if you happen to be using both the big and small client) https://royals.ms/forum/threads/mapleroyalss-patching.104745/#post-575497 Post by Matt in 2017 highlighting challenges in bandwidth, and his proposed ideal solution, which involves only downloading what has changed between updates. I agree with Matt's solution, but I wanted to ask if there was any progress being made or if there's new challenges that have prohibited progress in regards to making an automatic patcher.
I have no updates for you on an auto-patcher, but our new file-format allows us to upload very lightweight installers that can help players transition from, for example: Update 71 to 71.1 in just a few seconds (think a 5 MB installer compared to the normal 1.X GB installer), assuming all of their files are from Update 71 in the first place. We can possibly consider releasing such installers from Update 71 to 72, as well. I would have to investigate the feasibility of that before I can make promises, however.
Thank you for replying so quickly. Yeah, I assumed the new file format would facilitate updates. I think it would be really neat if there was some way to get those lightweight installers for bigger updates. I understand that the bandwidth costs associated with royals patching things might make a full auto-patcher not ideal (if the hosting situation is similar to when Matt made that post back in 2017), but again it would be really neat if the lightweight installers became the norm for people just jumping from the last update to the most recent one.
a torrent style auto updater like battle.net would remove most of the bandwidth requirements from royals
