After the short conversation I had with @Shiyui and @EeveeTheFox on the shoutbox a few days ago regarding ban notices, it got me thinking -- would players appreciate it if GMs announce bans, or not? I tried it once though, and in respond I got a few smegas that say "Oh, finally GMs are working?", and something along that line "Since when do bans get broadcasted?". On a side note, I think this discussion will be useful to the staff in deciding whether we should broadcast autoban messages like in old source when we get to fully implementing autoban. Discuss.
the announcements are like advertisements, like ''hey, if you do this, then this will happen to you. be smart, not stupid''. And it gives us an impression about whats happening on the server, so... yeah, it woulb be fun
Would be a tad difficult to fit someone people on the announcement though. I mean you guys ban as a person right? So what happens if that person has a ton of accounts? The purpose of those ban broadcasts generally go from amusement (of course) to wanting to know if that person banned is someone related to them. So if you only display the main offending account that no one knows about, wouldn't it defeat the purpose of broadcasting it at all?
Exactly the fact that they are banned? Honestly don't feel like it gives anything for anyone to see bans broadcasted. Just my opinion though.
Secondly GMs thinking how could they get the ban message linked to ones main account for more amusement value doesn't sound all that healthy approach towards managing the community.
A short 2hours after post, seems like theres a whooping 70% yes! Meanwhile, I feel daily ban appeals, GMs replying to enquiries from player and replying shoutbox. All players seems to know that in MapleRoyals GM Actually does work! once again, this is definitely a positive addition to the game Yes!
I encountered many newbies who aren't interested in forums nor in reading server T&C upon registration. I saw them going for common rule breaks such as vote abuse and acc sharing. When I criticized them to stop what they were doing, they replied "But they won't know". Bans are issued anonymously, unless the convict makes a ban appeal and that's only if we make the initiative to go and watch the drama. Many don't realize how strict the rules are and how many are getting banned per day. If bans can be announced, with the reason for the ban, it will raise awareness among new and old players and remind them of the consequences. I believe this will significantly reduce the rate of rule breaking in royals.
Will there be an announcement (+apology) for people getting unbanned after "you've been banned for ?suspicious activity but actually we have 0 concrete proof and so now we will unban you with or without compensation"? I agree that increased awareness (particularly in regards to vote abuse) is needed given the majority of players don't read TnCs thoroughly (and to be fair, in my limited few months on this game it seems that these terms get reviewed and updated every so often?). However, a public announcement saying "x has been banned for "ownership of ___ mesos/___ gear" or "suspected RWT/activity" just doesn't seem very convincing to the general public as hacking/macrobotting etc are, perhaps. Spoiler: Digression. I'm about to go back home for Christmas where apart from catching up with people / roadtrips etc will probably be at home playing this game, and tbh 1b+/day from farming/selling leech isn't actually that hard and so, you know, 15-20b at least in a month is probably doable. Is it really my responsibility to ~servertime/~mapowner each and every one of my transaction screenshots in case I have to "produce evidence of how much time you've been spending in this game"? Honestly I'm ambivalent towards this concept because I don't even know of a single government who broadcasts every single arrest within their region (this is a far stretch from a good analogy but anyway). Then again, anyone can apparently broadcast their lives for 2m/20+ words in this game so who's to decide GMs can't have free speech on ban broadcasting?
I don't think your analogy of a government fits into this scenario. Regarding your initial paragraph, good point. Perhaps we could hold back on broadcasting bans that are 100% certain such as those banned under suspicion? Meaning, we only broadcast bans that we are 101% sure of.
Will this cover all types of bans as well? I feel like it shouldn't, and maybe should be left for the minor offences only. It might actually play to the servers disadvantage to see the true frequency and stats of people getting banned, perhaps even becoming a discouragement for newer players.
I don like this suggestion. It is too much. BUT if you put the notice, just put it like this: "18 accounts have been banned today. 5 accounts for RWT, 2 accounts for KS, 7 for botting and 4 for harrasment." No player names. Just smega only one time everday. 0:00 server time. EDIT: If you smega when you ban one account, it is too much. Mapleroyals is game. It needs fun.
I like this idea a lot. We see like 2 ban appeals a day but there's probably a lot more than just 2 players getting banned. Also regarding their privacy, it will be pretty interesting how some people you know could be rule breakers.
Definitely would like to see this. People need to know all the slew of things they can get banned for and need to know that GMs are always there. I myself have come upon several cases where people would say something like "Eh GMs aren't here they don't know." In the case of multiple accounts, I assume the message would be broadcast for that one person that got banned and all the other account get autobanned as well without a message.
