I had the same problem with setting my screen to 60Hz in VMWare, but solved it by installing VMWare Tools. I assume that you haven't installed VMware Tools to your virtual machine.

To install VMware Tools, simply go to the top of your running virtual machine, select Player -> Manage -> Install VMWare Tools

If you get an error before starting the intsallation, you'll have to do it manually.

Download the VMware Tools packages for Windows and Linux at https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details?downloadGroup=VMTOOLS1032&productId=742

Locate the file windows.iso and take note of the file location.

Edit your virtual machine settings (you'll find the option in VMware Player before launching your virtual machine) and select "CD/DVD (IDE)" and browse to windows.iso.

When you launch your virtual machine you'll find a folder called VMware Tools in the explorer. Run the setup from there and let the program install.

I was able to set my frame to 60Hz and launch Royals after doing this. I hope that it'll resolve the issue for you as well.
