Hello all. I'm hoping there is someone here on Royals who has come across a similar issue and found a fix for it. I haven't had time (or money) to build a PC in some time. Right now I'm using a Dell Optiplex 980 with a first gen i5 and 8 GB of RAM. More than enough for Maple. I also like to stream video from it to my TV via HDMI cable. So I need a good video card. My friend gave me a decent card for $20, but it requires two 6 pin power plugs. So here's my issue. My onboard power supply is all used up. No spare connectors. And I can't easily replace it with an aftermarket because Dell uses a proprietary ATX power connector to the motherboard. So, what options do I have for upgrading the power supply WITHOUT changing the motherboard?
Does your previous graphics card require less power plugs? Other than that, it seems like a quite difficult task to upgrade psu on dell like that. Im no expert on this stuff so I would advice you to check out http://www.tomshardware.co.uk and either ask there about it (unless someone else here can help you out) or search for previous posts on the matter. There should be plenty as this isnt the most uncommon issue
My current graphics card is a 512 MB GeForce 8400 GS, no additional power is needed. I may just bite the bullet and buy a new motherboard and CPU.
I know this is an extremely overdue answer but since just getting back to the forums, this is my first time seeing your question. To answer your question (if you're still searching) it'll work as long as you purchase an adapter like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Female-Small-Male-Power-Cable/dp/B0182KS0HY
