May we please have an option to not have a reply bump a thread? After reviewing the ToS again, before making a funny thread in the Off Topic section, like the good wee lad I am, I had a ponder about this rule under the "Breach of Forum Etiquette" section: "Bumping one's own thread more frequently than once per every server day (UTC)." Before making the thread, I wondered- what if I replied to my own thread, a few times, back to back, because I had new ideas I wanted to put across several posts? I'd be forced to bump my thread each time, which, even if a moderator allowed it, would still be in violation of the ToS. Even moreso, I'd be bumping my own thread, when I may not want to, because it may overtake a better thread in the catalogue that needs or deserves the attention more. Also, it would show up in the "New Posts" side box every time. Even if the nature of the thread could allow it, and moderators were fine with it, it'd still be rude to bump your own thread over 9,000 times in a row, and clog up the "New Posts" box, because you wanted to add more posts to it. e.g. I make a thread for composing short stories, and make 5 stories in one day, for the same thread, posting them all, within 24 hours. Presuming I were allowed to do so, not only would my thread be bumped to the top of the catalogue each time, but you'd also see them come up in the "New Posts" box at the front of the forum. If there were an option to reply to my own thread, more than once, without bumping it, and/or without it showing up in the "New Posts" box, I would be: 1: Abiding by that rule of the Forum ToS, while still being able to reply to my own thread in a short time frame 2: Respecting other OPs by not overtaking their threads 3: Respecting front page visitors by not clogging up the "New Posts" box On that note, what if someone answers a question for someone, and doesn't want the thread bumped as a result? There is a courtesy in Japanese image board culture where, upon giving an answer that would cease further discussion, they would type, "sage", into the "options" field, so that their reply would not bump the thread, as the thread is now finished, and should be left to fall off, into the archive. This could benefit the Help & Advice section, as the OP would still get an alert they had a reply, without the thread getting bumped above other queries. If the "saged" reply doesn't actually answer the OPs question, the OP could then bump their own thread with a follow, telling that person that they did not answer their question (respectfully). Furthermore, perhaps there could be an option to turn off/toggle bumps for your thread entirely; that way, once an OP has their question answered, they can edit their thread, to turn off posts bumping it, as a courtesy to others. Back onto the "New Posts" issue; I noticed, when participating in the "counting" threads, each count post would show up in the "New Posts" box. That's a LOT of new posts being announced that are just numbers, each one bumping the thread. Given how slow the Off Topic section is, perhaps there could even be a limit, set by the OP, of how many times a user can bump their thread and have it show up in the "New Posts" box. Another example; what if someone wanted to reply to a thread from 2+ years ago, with a relevant post, but did not want to "necro" it in the process? Having a "no bump" option would be pretty useful, in that instance. In fact, what if there were a timer, where, if a thread does not receive a reply within a default time frame, the thread automatically turns off bumping, and it is up to the OP, or a moderator, to turn it back on? (I'm talking about threads in the off topic section that've been dead for like a year at LEAST) This could also be useful for moderators. THIS IS THE TLDR PART, LOOK HERE HEYYYY So, gentleroyallers, here is what I propose: 1: An option, upon making a reply to a thread, to not have it bump the thread, and/or show up in the "New Posts" box. 2: The option for an OP to toggle their thread from being bumped, for when the thread is finished. 3: The option for an OP to set a limit on how many times unique posters' replies bump their thread, within a specified time frame. (e.g. 1 bump per user, per 24 hours, synced with server clock) 4: A feature where a thread will automatically stop getting bumped by replies, if not replied to for X amount of time. Edit: sorry I accidentally generated a slime emote when writing "tldr" with a semicolon. Placing him right here for safe keeping --->
The clause is for people who bump without content. If you have proper stories to share within the day, you can post it so long as it adds content to the thread.
Hello, To clarify, the rule “Bumping one’s own thread more frequently than once per every server day (UTC)” is only enforced within the Marketplace sections (Buying, Selling, Trading). For other areas such as General Discussion, we generally do not apply this rule unless the bumps become excessive. Hope this clears up any confusion about the risk of receiving warning point(s).
