Is it possible to get rid of the black bars on the sides of the screen in fullscreen mode? If so how do I do that? I've been told to press alt+enter but all that does is put it in windowed mode

Change your graphics card settings to full screen and it'll be fixed.

Go to your graphics properties > general settings > scaling > change it to scale full screen. Try different resolution with same settings applied till it becomes full screen with no black bars on the both sides. It worked for me because i'm also using intel graphics hd.
