So I have been working on a game idea for a couple months now that would play kind of like a maplestory with combat similar to super smash bros. Here's a brief description of what it would be like: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Art: --Soft, cartoony graphics --2D with parallaxing Sound: --Not much here, basically similar to maplestory, bit different theme Gameplay: --2D sidescrolling MMORPG with classes, skills, stats, etc, but combat would be similar to super smash bros. in that it would be more fast paced, reaction combat using combinations of keys and directions. You would have a key be set to "Fire element skill" and a sword, and you would use your sword to do fire slashes to the sides, or do an upwards slash, or a spin attack for example. It would be really flexible, each key would be able to have a skill/element assigned to it, along with whether it's used for melee or range. --A major mechanic in the game would be based around elements, I am not sure if I want it to be something like "your appearance and elemental affinities are related" or what but I do want something more complex than "pick class > pick skills > grind level > pick subclass" more along the lines of "pick main class > pick some skills > use skills with different elements > level up skills? > advance/crossover class" --Elemental interactions would be decently complex, think kinda pokemonish. Two elemental attacks hit, one element is good against the other, that attack goes through, other attack is weakened or cancelled. Would tie into the "elements and appearance related" thing, since monsters would be colored in a similar way. --Skills would be separated into skill trees, starting from basic and narrowing further down "Magic mastery > Fire, earth, water, air masteries > fire slash, water bolt, etc masteries > etc" --One of the other main things about the game would be the very large world with a variety of different continents, caves, mountains, rivers, oceans, islands, etc to explore. --Monster generation would be more realistic than just popping up out of nowhere, each monster type would have certain areas (nests) that they would spawn, and would slowly spread out from that area. Raiding the nest would be very difficult, equivalent to a dungeon with a boss of some kind. Apart from nests, smaller burrows could also spawn in other areas, and would be an enterable mini-dungeon. The mini-dungeon would disappear once it is cleared out, but until then monsters would spawn inside it and spread outwards. Whenever a creature spawns, it has a small chance of being a variant type which would drop different/rare materials. Quests would be generated if a monster burrow spawns near a city. Maybe chances of 'rouge magicians' taking over a monster nest and increasing the spawning, but gets quest to clear and drops items when killed. Clans, guilds and the like: --I'm not really decided on what I want this to be, but my current idea is that there is a separate inventory piece that a clan ring or something would be placed in, and the ring can only be crafted by clan leader/sub-leaders. It would bind once traded, and maybe give some bonuses. I like this idea more than just clicking "invite", since it is a bit more immersive. --Other player/npc organizations would work in a similar way, maybe have a "mage guild" and a "warrior guild" etc for each profession. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am working on making a single player version of my ideas to test out how they work, but I'm not sure how long it will take for me to finish making a working version with the features I want, and make a decent prototype for the art style. I'll put up a link here when I make a demo version (~'.')~ Let me know what you guys think of the game idea and any suggestions/questions you have about it Some random images I was doing: Forest sketch: Map sketch:
