Most likely a stupid question but, how active and newb friendly is the server?

I downloaded the server yesterday and jumped in game. After getting off Maple Island I decided to go to the hangout spot that the [Trade] button takes you to and found a few people sitting inside. I asked them how the server was and all four told me to get out because the server was dead and worthless. They mentioned that a newb would have absolutely 0 chance of getting anywhere because of the way the server was run.

I feel like this was a biased opinion shared by some friends, and just figured I'd ask the forum here and see what the general public says.

Is there a leech meta here, where a new player is "forced" to make a mage or cleric in order to leech people simply to make money to fund the class they really want to play, or would I be able to play whatever I wanted to and not worry too much about funding? I also say the server did something to make HP not mandatory, however I didn't see any specifics on how, or what, the changes effected specifically.

Any information is helpful. Thank you all! :]

Some people on this server get very grumpy when some things aren't exactly the way they want them. They declare MapleRoyals a lost cause, a sinking ship that the staff is running into the ground with their incompetence (mixed metaphors are great). Nonetheless, these poor, deeply suffering souls log on every day, sit around on their perceived avant-garde chairs*, and complain, pausing only to say some spectacularly cringe things over super megaphone, or, for variety, relocate their whingeing to the forums for a spell.

It does help to have a bishop or arch mage to make money, but you're by no means "forced." Of course, you won't be able to afford really great stuff right away, but you can work your way up by selling scrolls, splits from bossing, etc.

*There was a chair gachapon as part of the Halloween event last year. It was 86'd because rich whiners can't deal with the plebes having the same chairs they do. Lol.

You'll meet decent people along the way. I'd say those people that you came across are those who have already given up playing the game (not sure why they're still online, if the game is as bad as they claim).
This is especially true when there's no P2W factors. It's all about how hard you "work" into getting where you want your characters to be. If you're a casual player like me, I don't necessary train that hard, but I find joy in doing the simplest thing.

And no, you don't necessary need to start off with a mage, although imo I think it'll make your journey alot more smoother if you can get some funding with selling leech. For me, I started mage simply because I like Bishop (main it in official, so naturally I'll do it here as my first char). After awhile when I got bored, I started my NL. :) So how do I get funding? Mainly I started off by selling AP Reset (it was 7~9m back then but it's 15~18m now, and Gachaing).

Play the character you want. At higher levels, the damage gap between classes can be great, but within the respective jobs, it's more about perseverance and working hard.
Although it's never a bad idea to make a HS mule...

I generally feel this server is very friendly towards the new players. Sure, there might be an unconscious emphasis on HP washing or getting godly gears or create a mage but remember this not force upon or a requirement to enjoy the game.

    SpecturmChart...GTGsoon-01.jpg
The players you encounter are probably from the extreme end of the spectrum, which tends to be the most vocal/visible groups but do not accurately depict the server at all. (Link on where I got the image from)

In its current form, a new player can enjoy most content without going out of their way to create a mage to farm for mesos. Being funded just makes things a lot easier and doing things much faster (just like in real life). Especially with the new update, HP washing is now less meaningful by increasing HP for traditional squishy classes that needs a degree of funding in order to access endgame content. Now with a proper party layout, you can easily access most endgame content with no additional commitment.

That said, due to the server's huge and diverse community, not everyone is solely focused on leech meta.

Different guilds for players enjoying various type of playstyle

Unwashed - Dedication to never HP washing their characters.
Ironman - Playing the game without leeching, trading or partying.
Caveman - For players who decided to exile themselves to the Sleepwood Dungeon.
Islander - For players who never wants to leave the island, and survive on whatever the island provides.
    OPQlovers - For PQs lovers.

    Caring and helpful veterans

    - Free leech (1)(2)(3)
    - Free NX/stuff/care package (1)(2)(3)(4)
    - Dedicated advice corner (1)

Please do not abuse other players' goodwill :p

A key to have an enjoyable experience here is just to be open-minded, join a like-minded guild and be nice to everyone! 0:)

Sorry if I sounded a bit too long-winded XD, probably need to edit this post once I get back.

Personally, I think if you want to play this game as efficiently as possible (and not waste time), making a leeching mage is a must. Unfortunately, the current state of the game rewards you better EXP by leeching than actively grinding on your main character.

I started off playing the game the more fun way and actively grinded my main character. But when I noticed how everybody else is HP washing heavily and leveling a lot faster than me, I had to give in and make a leeching mage and eventually restarted my main character as well.

Most of us who played official low-server MapleStory have fond memories of the game back then, but truth be told, it had its own issues. These are the issues we're experiencing here. Holy Symbol being overpowered and discouraging bigger party-play as it rewards you with better EXP in smaller parties. You will never see a full party of 6, killing monsters for EXP like we used to in the good ol' days in maps such as Ant Tunnel. Another issue is mages don't have some sort of cooldown on their ultimate abilities making them able to oneshot everything on the map? This is why leeching is a thing in the first place.. The fact that the supporting class (Bishops) is probably the strongest class overall, instead of actually being supporting. If you start playing 4fun4, you will eventually give in and make several buff mules. MapleRoyals feels like a single-player game most of the time and this is also what the official servers would've become if they were stuck on the same patches. But I have faith in the staff here and Kevin is an amazing developer. Hopefully we'll eventually see solutions to these issues and maybe get a secondary non-inflated world.

Sorry about the rant. Do yourself a favor and make a leeching mule. Welcome :)

You wrote a nice post and communicated your opinion in a good way, but I would like to bring to OP's attention that the following is just not true :
In certain cases and in certain levels, this will be true. But it is absolutely not generally true. Especially in lower levels, you can gain more EXP by grinding on your own, especially if you are a bit smart and efficient, and not lazy.

Also should note that OPQ and PPQ (as of the last update), are without a doubt faster than leeching for part of the level range you mentioned, presuming PQ's are being included in this discussion.

You play the game at your speed. You can make a bishop first or you can make whatever your heart desires.Either way, you will find that the game is mostly if not, 100% fun.

People in the game are another story. Some are rly nice, some are liars fakers cheaters, greeders,or just plain depressed with their lives.
Stay away from them and don't get involved, cause they will drag you down.

There are a lot of places to venture and zombie teeth and the mayor of NLC will give you experience when you are lvl 15,You will gain 2 lvls there by doing his quest. Later on the killing dyle quest will give you fame and exp.You need someone to party with if you can't kill dyle or the crocs.
I hope you have a great experience here!

My bad, definitely haven't tried these PQs since the EXP buff. I know I've slowly seen more smegas for OPQ recruiting, but still very few for PPQ.

It is not dead, it is definitly bleeding tho. However, latest update might bring New ways of playing instead of leeching all the goddamn way without any interaction between players.

It's not dead, it's gotten pretty active as of late. Up to 1500 players, and more i believe every August.

When i started, no one helped with me with money or anything but i knew this was a #1 server for a reason. Population is a great aspect of the game. There will be bad people and there will be real humble people that don't go around acting all stuck up. I had to grind in Ant Tunnel for equips for just 100k to get me going.

Also, yes i did ask for help like you did and no one helped me. I recommend not asking in Henesys as henehoes will just tell you the answer you got from those guys in the Lounge. Better off asking in Kerning, FM or Ludi in my opinion.

Thanks so much, everyone. I decided to download the server this morning. I'm going to work on a spearman, a class I've never actually played! I appreciate you all! :]

Invest in pet and buy autopickup and pot. NPC those eqs :).
Grind until lvl 21 then go kpq. Between lvl 30 to 35. U may either kpq or grind. Grinding at training area allows you to loot eq to sell thus making some mesos. At lvl 35 go lpq until lvl 50
After lpq. Go lmpq( not sure about popularity after new patch) then go opq since it is buffed. If you dont wanna do pq after lvl 50. U may train at mp3 or coolies zombie. But coolie zombie is far away from town, so u cant npc a lot of time. What you can do is buy a regular tele rock in fm to tp back to coolie zombie. As you get higher level as a dragon knight, you can party with a priest at either himes or wolfspider.
And also regarding selling ap reset or gachaing to make profit. If u cant hit the jackpot when gachaing, you are pretty much screwed.

    Just Some tips. Goodluck
