The UK National Cyber Security Centre said this week it would stop using "whitelist" and "blacklist" due to racial stereotyping surrounding the two terms. Instead, it would use the terms "allow list" and "deny list" instead of the two. "It's fairly common to say whitelisting and blacklisting to describe desirable and undesirable things in cyber security," said Emma W., Head of Advice and Guidance at the NCSC. "However, there's an issue with the terminology. It only makes sense if you equate white with 'good, permitted, safe' and black with 'bad, dangerous, forbidden'. There are some obvious problems with this," she added. "So in the name of helping to stamp out racism in cyber security, we will avoid this casually pejorative wording on our website in the future." Edit: You know what, im gonna take my own advice and ignore this sort of topic. Its premise isnt one i agree with, it doesnt apply to me, my friends or anyone else i know. Its just a magnet for drama.
The terms blacklist and whitelist have never referred to skin colour. The colours black and white representing bad/good, darkness/light cross cultural boundaries and have predated racial tensions by centuries. For example; Fear of the night and worshipping the light are universal. The idea that someone or something might be racist just by using words that refer to this concept is absurd, and so is choosing to not use these words for this reason. The companies that have chosen to make these changes are doing it for publicity. Closing thread.
