For those of you who don't know what it is: Dwarf Fortress is a game where you either can play as a team of dwarves who embark on a quest to build a great fortress! Encounter werebeasts, artifacts, monsters, and invasions as you build your fort up! You can also play as a lone dwarf, elf, human, animal man, or kobold as you journey across a randomly generated world. Or, if you just want to read, use legends mode to view the history of your random world. http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Quickstart_guide - DF Wiki quickstart guide for fortress mode. Feel free to use wiki to look up anything you encounter. https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/ - DF subreddit, with a helpful weekly questions thread. http://lazynewbpack.com/ - Lazynewbpack, a helpful tool to organize utilities, graphics, options, and more. Allows you to customize graphics, if you don't like or find the ASCII confusing. Contains Dwarf Therapist to manage jobs, and DFHack to use commands. Highly recommended for new players, or old ones if you just like to be organized. NOTE: Contains DF with the install, so you don't need to download the actual game separate. http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ - Dwarf Fortress website, with download links. Tips! Don't quit because it's confusing. After you understand the basic controls, it's a breeze. Just search up any questions you have. There's a large community. If you are using LNP, disable aquifers. They add an extra challenge that may confuse a new player. Don't sell tree hugging hippies elves wooden objects unless you want to anger them like a true dwarf Magma fixes everything Losing is fun! In this thread, you can post questions about the game, stories that happen in your game, or just anything DF related. To start off, I will try to post a story about a fort I am creating as I write this post.
We start our humble journey in Teyo Alino, "The World of Dawning" We can see that goblins and humans are bitter rivals, both competing for top place in the world. Elves are very few in between (thank god), aswell as kobolds. Dwarves sit in the middle of all this chaos. Our world map The map shows two large islands on the west, with one large continent taking up the rest, full of mountains and a plethora of landscapes. We pledge our allegiance to "The Tools of Budding", hoping to establish a fortress in the fertile central lands of the continent. Unfortunately for them, they hired me to lead this expedition, and we may have taken a wrong turn and have now ended up south between two conifer forests and a taiga biome seperated by a river, cold and terrifying. I believe this is the exact opposite of the fertile lands with rolling golden hills we heard of, but whatever. Too late now. We begin to settle down. We make Zareg Molrulnar our swordsdwarf, because of his agile and strong skills. The rest of our crew doesn't matter, and is assigned the jobs of leader, farmer/brewer, two miners, a carpenter and a mason. Finally, we settle down in our new home. Kilrudlised, also known as "Bronzemarks" After a quick scout around, we find a longnose gar and a common snapping turtle in the river. We also see many strange purple trees here. One of our miners said they're called "Grumprongs". Their wood is pretty heavy, but nice looking. We probably will have to use it for defensive traps and housing because of this. This doesn't look so bad after all.
This game owns. IT OWNS. Words alone do not do it justice. Sadly, but not surprisingly, few here will have heard of it and fewer still will have the patience to get deep into it. But for those that do... I salute you!
