A thread that combines every thing about new source all into one. What is New Source and what's the point of it? This is, by far, the biggest update to happen to MapleRoyals since it was founded in 2013. Quite literally every aspect of the game has been re-coded from scratch. New source is a custom coded source code written by our own developer, Kevin (Karven). Kevin was the owner/developer for MapleFrontier years ago and joined our team to help us out. The new source code is based off a v83 code, but we won't be bringing all of v83's content to our server. Read down for more information. What's the point? Well, one of the big issues we faced here with old source was the lag. There are so many of you from around the world, and old source was run on such antiquated and inefficient code that no matter how powerful our server was (and we have one the best servers a consumer can buy from a web host), the source itself just couldn't deal with everything going on. Old source had many issues. Frequent d/cing at bosses, frequent loss of merchant items, various timer errors that resulted in things like perma-stun, perma-seduce, server crashes from GM events, zakum not warping people in, horntail preheads not spawning, horntail not dropping loot, stuck apples, some skills were beyond broken and had been for years, etc etc.. Some things were truly unfix-able just because of the source code itself was so out dated and so full of holes. The new source code has been written completely from scratch with efficiency and stability as the basis for every aspect of the game. Why are certain things not working? Even though this project has been in production for a long time, the increasing amount of tweaks has affected many of the aspects of the game on how they function and how they are read. Basically everything in the game has to be revisited and tweaked to work on this new backbone. Some of these things take a while due to their complexity, and others are somewhat easier to re-attach. When will they be working again? We have a priority list that's being updated. Eventually everything will be working again and more. In the near future we're looking at the remaining broken skills, anti cheating, account registration and new character access for example. We do not have estimated dates for when these features will return, but we are working every day on things. Why have some of these changes been made? Based on community and staff feedback and the opportunity to have a lag-free server for all of our players we started this project, and the changes and ideas we wanted to implement in it, two years ago. Some things are easier to explain: for example we want the playerbase to spend the same amount of time to level up as they did before we launched this new source. The EXP rate was lowered to reflect the different EXP curve used by the v83 client. The 3.2x rate closely resembles the 4x rate used on the Old Source. For example.... Level 166: Originally needing- 345,790,561 EXP @ 4x. So when we divide 4 by that number you get: 86,447,640.25 New needed exp- 276,632,449 @ 3.2x. So when we divide 3.2 you get: 86,447,640.3125 Level 179: Originally- 691,870,326 @ 4x= 172,967,581.5 New needed- 553,496,261 @ 3.2= 172,967,581.5625 If you have a specific change you want us to talk about that isn't detailed out below, please let us know in a feedback thread so we can discuss it there. What will change or what has changed? In order to take advantage of the some of the new content we plan to offer, we are now using a v83 client. Does that mean we are a v83 or a v62 or a vxx server? No, we will continue to be a nostalgic server like we always have been with an updated client and a server built from scratch by Kevin. By using an updated client we are reaping all the benefits that the updated client has to offer (belts, medals, etc.) while keeping the game data from MapleRoyals (ToT, Ulu, etc.) the same as we had it. Functionally, the main differences that you will see is the EXP curve has been changed, and so to compensate for the difference the server's EXP rate was changed to 3.2x. Essentially, you will still level at the same rate as before, with little to no difference. Other changes to note: We will be getting Mu Lung Dojo PQ and Crimsonwood Keep PQ ((CWKPQ)). Party quests like Carnival PQ and LMPQ will return. Some handpicked skills of less popular 4th job classes have also received a v72 - v86 buff. Spoiler: Specific skill changes Spoiler: Warrior Spoiler: Magician Spoiler: Archer Spoiler: Thief Spoiler: Pirate A new voting and RP charging system has been written which enables you to vote and charge RP while your character is logged into the game (outside of the Cash Shop). We imported the v62 Bigfoot that still has invincibility frames. We aren't currently opening any new areas, though it can be discussed later in the future. Pets, Hired Merchants and Regular stores will now expire according to their set date in the Cash Shop. Pets will require the Water of Life quest to be completed for the pet to be revived. Maximum inventory space is now 96 instead of 100. Any items in the last 4 slots of your inventory has been safely stored within Fredrick to be retrieved once functional. Base AP stats are now capped at 999 because of a client limitation. Changing your hairstyle at Big Headward in the Free Market Entrance will now require a Royal Coupon from the Cash Shop under DONOR > Use. Zakum pre-quests now start at your 3rd job instructor instead of Adobis. Regular Stores and Hired Merchants must now be purchased from the Cash Shop instead of Fredrick. iTCG questline and related Crimsonwood Keep quests including the Badge Bounty exchange quest are implemented. This means that items that were previously craftable at NPC Glimmerman must now be obtained through the items' proper iTCG questline. Level 64 Maple Shields will be available from Gachapon instead of being craftable through Mia. Removal of warp-to-FM button functionality. Why not go back to old source? It's not possible for us to go back for one, as the current character data is different from what we had in the old source. But we also don't want to take a step back in our progression towards a stable server with more functionality and possibilities for future content and events. We're actively working on making and maintaining the game playable as we develop and release the next steps towards this goal. Why is it not possible? Why not just copy and paste the data over? Courtesy of John: Just look at how a password hash works. MD5, SHA1, etc hashes are only one way. You can encrypt a password in a hash but you cannot decrypt the hash back to a password. (Before anyone starts posting links showing how MD5 has been "cracked", it's more like guess and check, not actually following a formula or calculation to decrypt the hash like you would follow a formula/calculation to create the hash in the first place). With the difference in structures and fields between old source and new source database, it might be possible to convert the data back, but would probably take longer than it would take for Kevin to finish coding the cash shop, which is the largest part that needs to be done. Everything else should come fairly easily afterwards.(read: It would take a long time to write a converter). Other frequently asked questions Why not hire more developers? It is incredibly hard to find competent developers that have enough knowledge and experience with MapleStory. Because of this, it makes it even more difficult to find developers that are trustworthy enough to have access to the source code that Kevin has spent tons of time working on. Additionally, any new developer would need to spend a lot of time understanding the methodology of the new source's code itself before being able to know how to proceed with any additional coding on their part. Therefore the time it would take to find somebody competent enough, and the time that would need to be taken away from Kevin to tutor any new developer on the source code, along with the incredible risk to the code's integrity means that it is not a worthwhile solution. Why is Kevin the only one working on the code? This question is mostly answered above, but additionally: Kevin is the one who created the code from the ground up. It's not as simple as just copy/pasting another server code. As many of you know, most every private server is riddled with bugs that have to be patched, exploits that get abused before they're found - some of which even result in major rollbacks, etc. With a source code written from the start, Kevin has the ability to control many aspects of what's happening and know where to go to fix it. This also allows him to implement working features that many other servers don't have. Why change something after player feedback was against the change? (IE: Boat rides, FM warp button, expiring NX merchants) Removal of the warp to FM button: The warp to FM button is something that was implemented in the very early days of MapleRoyals with the sole purpose of it being a way for players to quickly be able to socialise with each other on a server which at the time had no more than 100 players online. It was intended to be removed at a later date once the server had gotten more popular (which at the time wasn't expected to happen). It was removed not only for the sake of a bit of nostalgia but also due to the button being used for purposes outside of what it was intended for; Buff mules in the Free Market, a way to change channel without being returned to town when you normally would be, and other things which would not be possible otherwise. As thoughts of a new source code came to light, Matt figured that the change would be best implemented once the new source launched, which back then we thought might happen near the end of 2015 or the beginning of 2016. Matt has said: "It is definitely something that I somewhat regret implementing into the game in the first place, although there is no way to know whether the server would have gotten as popular as it has been without it. And because this is a change that has been playing on my mind since the beginning of the server, and that it is something that I strongly feel that many players will be able to get used to after a while, it is something I am very reluctant to change back." Mandatory Boat rides Not yet implemented but will likely be arriving in the near future are functional boat rides, there's been a lot of controversy about having them being mandatory. To come to a happy medium, we introduced a custom item called a "Fast Travel ticket". Buying one from the Cash Shop with enable you to present it to ticket ushers and skip boat rides and such for the period of time until it expires. Monster spawn changes As some of you may know, the old source's monster spawning system was a complete mess, not entirely GMS-like, and with us having done many hacky fixes to try to make certain maps worth training on. The new source now uses the proper spawning system which has now brought back some memorable training spots like MP3 and Red Nose Pirate Den. However the new spawning system has caused some maps to be nerfed. We want to try and avoid doing any hacky changes to the spawning system in the new source and if we do want to try and buff some maps to make them viable again, it may be best for us to think about adjusting EXP/HP ratios rather than simply making the maps have more monsters spawning. We have thought up some potential issues with this as well, but we will be open to discussing changes further at a later date. Expiring Merchants, Pets, and Chalkboards This is something that we feel will pose as a good additional NX sink in general, and will bring in functionality of Mar' the Fairy and the Water of Life. We will also have Regular Stores available to those who don't want to spend the increased amount that it will cost to have a 24/7 Merchant up for multiple days. This has yet to be implemented but we don't think there are too many downsides to implementing this, apart from needing to figure something out for Maple Island. If there are any concerns then please start a discussion about it prior to it being implemented. By pets expiring, it does not mean the pet will be removed from your inventory. When a pet expires, it turns into a nonfunctional doll that needs to be brought back to life by Marr the Fairy in Ellinia. This applies to RP pets as well - they will not be removed from your inventory. They will simply need the Water of Life to be revived. Important things to note We do not have a mac client available right now, but it's something we will be trying to look into in the (distant) future. We are aware that spawn rates in many maps are decreased. This is a result of using the original v83 spawn rates. We have been discussing ways to bring it back to its former state, but keep in mind we will be getting Mini Dungeons as well, which should help in a lot of areas. Additionally: Yes, we said we would allow a Full SP Reset for characters. This was done as part of Update #19. The invincible 'bot-catcher' monsters have been removed from maps. The Maple Leaf (5,000 NX item) has been replaced with a 5,000 NX card. Skill Points have been reset for all characters to allow the free redistribution of points now that many skills have been fixed. Note: Please take extreme care when reallocating your Skill Points to ensure that you do not spend points earned from a higher level job on a lower level skill-set - unless this is what you want to do! The amount of SP that must be spent on a skill level before being able to add SP to a higher skill level are as follows: For non-magician classes: To allocate to 2nd job skills; 61 SP is required to be spent on 1st job. To allocate to 3rd job skills; 61 SP is required to be spent on 1st job and 121 SP on 2nd job, or a total of 182 across both 1st and 2nd job. To allocate to 4th job skills; 61 SP is required to be spent on 1st job, 121 SP on 2nd job, 151 SP on 3rd job, or a total of 333 SP across 1st, 2nd and 3rd job. For magicians: To allocate to 2nd job skills; 67 SP is required to be spent on 1st job.
