After experiencing numerous boss runs where party members who have an NVIDIA GPU experience DCs in Horntail on head C/wings, I've decided to write a guide for a potential fix on how to avoid crashing mid-run! This is my first guide and it is on the more technical side, so I apologize in advance if things get confusing. Spoiler: HELP REQUEST FORM If you're having trouble following along, please send me a private message in this format: Title: Enable Integrated Graphics Help Request Monitor Setup (Single Monitor/HDMI Splitter/Dual Monitors): Discord Username: Available Times (based on Server Time): What you need help with: Spoiler: Example Title: Enable Integrated Graphics Help Request Monitor Setup (Single Monitor/HDMI Splitter/Dual Monitors): Dual Monitors Discord Username: discorduser#1234 Available Times (based on Server Time): 20:00 server time What you need help with: I'm not sure how to enable integrated graphics in my BIOS Disclaimer: The most efficient way for me to help you through my fix would require video chatting on your phone to walk you through the BIOS, followed by screen sharing on your computer to confirm that MapleRoyals is properly running on your integrated graphics. I respect everyone's privacy, so if you do not feel comfortable with video chatting/screen sharing, we can discuss an alternative (e.g. pictures of BIOS pages/screenshots of Task Manager) Requirements for this Configuration Anyone with a processor with integrated graphics! Intel processors only, run a quick Google search of your model to see if it comes with it! (Models ending in "F", such as "i5-9600KF" do not come with it, unfortunately ) Make sure you have the proper drivers installed for your integrated graphics. Instructions for single monitor, dual monitors, or HDMI splitter have been provided! Configuration Steps Access BIOS on your PC. For those of you who aren't sure how to access BIOS on your boot screen (usually by pressing either F2/F8/F10/F12/DEL), there is an alternative method: Spoiler: Alternative method [*]Press your start menu and select your power options. [*]While holding shift, press the restart option. [*]You'll be redirected to a screen where you'll then select "Troubleshoot" -> "Advanced Options" -> "UEFI Firmware Settings". From the BIOS, locate the integrated graphics settings. (You'll be on your own for this part of the guide. Please don't hesitate to PM me if you need help!) BIOS and their layouts vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so try Googling "enable integrated graphics (your motherboard brand) bios". For example, I have an ASUS motherboard, so I would enable Advanced Mode -> System Agent Configuration -> Graphics Configuration -> Toggle iGPU Multi-Monitor "ON". Once you've located and enabled integrated graphics in your BIOS, make sure to Save Changes and Exit. Now that integrated graphics are enabled, we're going to rewire our monitor(s). Please take note of which monitors are connected to which graphics output or HDMI splitter slot, this is a very important part of the configuration. (Only for splitter/2 monitors) If you have one monitor: Check step 5 of this section before you proceed, then simply switch the cable from your GPU to your motherboard. If you have two monitors: Unplug one monitor from your graphics card and connect it to your motherboard (integrated graphics output - usually HDMI, sometimes DisplayPort/VGA/DVI) If you are using a splitter: Simply connect both cables (1 from graphics card / 1 from motherboard) to the splitter. Spoiler: What it should look like After the monitor is connected to the integrated graphics output, confirm that there are two graphics outputs in Task Manager: Right click your task bar and select "Task Manager". Click the "Performance" tab and verify that there two GPUs in use on the left-hand column (GPU0 & GPU1). Spoiler: Task Manager View Setting up our display(s). (Skip if only 1 monitor) Right click your desktop and select "Display Settings". (Skip if using splitter) Rearrange your displays so they are properly oriented (clicking the identify button can help you determine which monitor corresponds to each number). Recall which monitor you had connected to your motherboard (integrated graphics output). If you have two monitors: Click on the monitor in the interface (labeled 1 or 2). Scroll to the bottom and check the box labeled "Make this my main display". If you are using a splitter: Scroll to the bottom and under the "Multiple displays" menu, select "Show only on *X*", where *X* is the number that corresponds to the output from your motherboard. Switch inputs on your splitter. Last step! Verify that MapleRoyals is using your integrated graphics card. Open up MapleRoyals and pull up Task Manager again. In the "Processes" tab, locate MapleRoyals, scroll to the right, and note the GPU engine it is using (GPU 0 / GPU 1). Click on the "Performance" tab and check that the GPU engine it is using is your Intel integrated graphics. Spoiler: Task Manager Verification If everything checks out, we're all done! Note: To switch back to dedicated graphics for other games, repeat steps in section 4.3 for the monitor connected to your graphics card. *If you only have one monitor, you may experience a black screen upon switching video outputs. A simple restart should fix this!* Caution: If you are using a splitter, do not switch inputs while you are in-game! Doing so will cause your client to freeze until you switch back. Feel free to ask questions if anything sounds unclear. Please bump and like this thread if this solution works out for you guys! Thanks for reading! Spoiler: FAQs Q: Why does my game experience more lag than before? A: When you are using your NVIDIA GPU to play MapleRoyals, your monitor is also using your NVIDIA GPU -- this is a matter of the refresh rate that your monitor supports while using certain graphics. For example. even if you have a 144hz (up to 144 visible frames per second) monitor, you most likely will only be able to set your monitor to 60hz (up to 60 visible fps) while the input source is from your integrated graphics. However, once you switch the input source to your monitor to your NVIDIA GPU, you can bump your refresh rate back to 144hz. Another example for dual monitors would be: Monitor 1: 144hz, connected to NVIDIA GPU Monitor 2: 60hz, connected to integrated GPU, set as main display to "force" use of the integrated graphics Situation: Running a client which starts on monitor 2 (running at 60 fps), but you drag it to monitor 1 which is 144hz. A common misconception is that you would expect your client to run at 144 fps because the client is on monitor 1 which is 144hz, however, the game is still being rendered by your integrated GPU, not your NVIDIA card, thus capping the framerate at 60 fps (or whatever the maximum refresh rate your integrated graphics can support). More to come...
So I have a question, can you use a HDMI splitter and connect 2 inputs into your CPU into one screen? Will this allow you to toggle between the GPU and CPU?
If you mean having only one monitor, and having HDMI outputs from both your CPU and GPU into the single monitor, then yes! One of my monitors has two inputs, so it wasn't necessary for me to go out and buy a splitter. The only thing I had to change about the configuration was the way I set up my displays. Rather than selecting the monitor that is connected to the CPU and setting that as my main display, I selected the dropdown option under "Multiple displays" to "Only show on *X*", where *X* is the number that corresponds to the output from your CPU. I'll be updating the post to reflect this workaround, thanks for the suggestion!
Provided instructions for users without a second monitor or a splitter, anyone with a processor with integrated graphics can try this out now!
One person who used this got a black screen when they went from MB to GPU, but they had no problems going from GPU to MB
added a help request form and a FAQ section Spoiler: if u have nvidia and haven't used this guide welcome to my blacklist
this works for me. i've only tried it with game sounds muted though. does it work with maple bgm/sound on?
This has been long overdue but I finally got a chance today to run 2 ht's in which I didn't d/c due to using this guide! Thank you!! I usually d/c after legs and tail during wings/head A and have been for the past few months. I run nvidia gpu with intel processor for reference and before using this guide, I would d/c maybe one out of every 3 to 4 runs. Thank you again p.s - I had sound muted though, someone in the party had nx stars and it was quite annoying, otherwise I think I would've left it on. I personally also had bgm off too.
Going to test this now after client froze (but was still playable) while using a VM during the first run. Will update the post with results! Edit: It worked!!! I finally finished my first Horntail run!
