How about adding Omok as multiplayer forum game, including a competitive ranking system?

Don't we all love that mini-game, Omok? I do! Sadly, it doesn't work on MapleRoyals... thus my suggestion! I was thinking we could have the beloved mini-game from Maple, Omok, as forum multiplayer mini-game! This would then probably be an extra page (next to the User CP, FAQ, Arcade, etc. stuff) instead of a simple Arcade game, since it's multiplayer. You should also be able to choose if you want to play against someone specific or just a random person currently waiting to play.

It doesn't have to be all fancy-looking, really; just the simple concept of Omok. A competitive ranking system, for example the Elo rating system, which is a good ranking system for 1v1 games like Chess or, in fact, Omok. A bit of friendly competition never hurts, right? Maybe you could add a sort of ranking list and add everyone's individual Elo rating to their public profile.

I believe this would provide more variety in our daily endeavours here on MapleRoyals and give us more to do during e.g. server downtime. I also think I can speak for a big part of the community that they enjoyed playing Omok and are disappointed that it doesn't work in-game.

I honestly don't know how much work this would be concerning the coding and stuff, since I'm not an expert at all, nor do I know if it's possible (but I'm guessing it is). Looking for feedback from more experienced players and preferably Chokladkakan the web developer here. :)

So, what do you guys think? Any comments, feedback or further suggestions related to the topic are more than welcome!

I love this idea just because I've always enjoyed playing Omok and getting into mini-tournaments on GMS. *-*

If it's not too much trouble to possibly implement (verses fixing omok sets), I'd love to see this happen.

I agree. I also think we should have Match Cards here as well, if possible.

Obvious question, unless I'm missing something...

Who the hell has time and knowledge to make a browser based MapleStory Omok game with multiplayer capability? And investing time into doing something like that does not seem like a very smart idea. I'm sure it would take somebody many weeks if not months to create something like this.

Well, Omok isn't a Maple game, it's been around waaaay before Maple. It's something you can find numerous apps, browser games and programs for online, some even have such a multiplayer feature... That's why I even suggested this. The only thing that would make a MapleRoyals omok browser game attractive is a competition within our own community.

And as I said, I don't know how long this would take to create. But if you can find a simple, open-source version somewhere, that would make things easier since you don't have to code the entire game... Just the rankings.

Edit: More about Omok and its origin...

Definitely not something the Staff should be investing time in, though. That's what I think.

So you think investing time in something the community wants and would enjoy more than a lot of other things is stupid? Okay, good to know.

I thought it's been made clear people miss Omok in MapleRoyals. :l

I used to play so many omok money matches, if only we could add betting it'd be great xD. I'd love to see this added, but not at the cost of regular server investment.

I believe the community would enjoy Omok in the game more, as well as other bugs and improvements that need doing. Joong also did not say it was stupid, just something that should not have time invested into it as there are plenty of other things to look into.

Yeah, my point is that the community wants to see Omok. This was merely an alternative proposal to the in-game Omok (which isn't working), in case this would be easier to set up. Christine summed it up perfectly earlier:

I mean, if it's easier to be [STRIKE="1"]implemented[/STRIKE] fixed in-game, then that'd be a better solution, of course.

This would definitely be a hell of a lot more trouble than adding Omok and Match cards in the game.

Okay, scratch that, then. On a side-note, though; would it be possible to have a ranking for Omok scores (once Omok gets fixed)? That'd be swell, since without one, no one really knows how many points everyone has... And, after all, it's a competitive game.

A ranking based on the number of points would be nice to have so I can play against people who have similar points as me. Losing to someone who has significantly less points than me means I lose so much with a loss. It would be nice if the scores took into account win-loss percentages also, as you can have a low W-L ratio but still have a high number of points through getting wins against people with high points.

Omok is srs ty. You can't make it not serious. :(

If you want a ranking, just make a tournament system, an inbuilt ranking wouldn't make sense as you don't have to play people at your level.

I used to edit and customize javascript-based mini-games for my old website, so I'm fairly sure something like this would be do-able with a free-to-use Omok script and some replacement images and text.

However, like other members of staff, I'm lacking in time right now, but if someone wants to make a custom browser-based multiplayer Omok game for us as a stopgap while the real deal is being fixed or for times when the server is down, I think that would be cool.
