Hello Royalers, Some criticizing, some rumors and some legitimate answers towards the subjective and concrete reality of MapleRoyals success.. The passion of the staff - Subjective reality As I have done research towards successful servers throughout my journey, I have noticed that the only servers that truly persist are the servers with true passion for this game. Even though Matt doesn't have the best reputation in dealing with his staff at all times, he is truly passionate, as he reached level 200, on probably the worst server in Maple Story history, Demethos. Aside of programming, you need to have a true form of passion to create a legitimately good server. Lifetime of a server - Concrete truth Due to the lifetime of this server, you clearly get players that try and stick. This is also a very notable part in order to get a legitimate view of the reality as to why a server remains to exist. MapleRoyals, who has been attacked with a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) was forced to shut down after Nexon decided to try and sue them, which MapleRoyals replied by moving to Russia. So clearly, with this statement... You can see how dedicated they are at keeping their servers open and running. They are not playing around. Correct me if I'm wrong but after MapleRoyals moved from a 10x to a 4x server, we've been about 5 years in to this result, and that's astonishing for any server to make it past the 5 year mark. The seriousness of improvement - Subjective reality Even though this server started out with a pretty shitty secruity system, where Matt was called out for on ''hacker forums'' I noticed a slight amount of seriousness in his behavior towards security. Here is a very old thread on CCplz Where Matt simply replied: I'm not here to make a statement on my personal opinion, so let's keep it with the facts. What happened here is that Matt challenged the people on this forum to ''beat him to it''. Evidentially, no one seemed to ''crack his code''. So unless they've moved on to something new, which I am personally unaware of. The Sha1/2 security system has been doing a great job keeping the server ''safe'' The existence of ''Legends'' - Subjective reality When a server has people you ''look up to'' often mentioned ''players in the Fryslan guild''. You have someone to look up to. I personally think that this is evidential for any game. I don't want to elaborate too much on this as it speaks for itself, but what I remember from 06' was that people would literally ''stalk'' pro's in order to get a glance of them in order for them to feel motivated. Here's a video of what I mean. Knowing what the players want - Subjective reality combined with factual statistics It is pretty commonly known that players ''just don't want to deal with the low rates anymore''. Experimenting with the rates himself, the staff has come to a conclusion that 4x exp is precisely what players want, and that plays such an incredible role. Any lower would feel too slow, any higher would just be too fast. Even though they don't always listen to the players, they have a clear vision, and the statistics don't lie. That's why this server still lives, and continues to do so. Even the cosmetics play a giant role, and always has. It has been clear that other servers have tried to recreate the uniqueness of MapleRoyals, but failed due to the lack of lasting long enough and other reasons.
So how much did Matt pay you to write these out? lol jk. It's nice to see some new info I never knew! Good read!
Just clarifying a few things: Our host received a DMCA which we complied with, but there were no attempts of (or threats of) suing. We're now using Bcrypt (Like I said in the screenshot you quoted), and is much more secure of an encryption than Sha-1. This entire section seems unnecessary... Of course there are always rumours and thoughts of who might be behind certain DDoS attacks, but it is pretty unfair to publicly denounce both servers like that without proof, both for the act of DDoS'ing and the apparent accusations made by staff members of other servers. I've removed that section from your post, as well as the parts referring to other servers in general, since I don't feel that judging and comparing other servers is very appropriate for this forum.
@Matt, I was awaiting for my post to be removed, so I'm happy it didn't. Had it coming that the DDoS section was removed, I just wanted to leave nothing out, whether it played a factual role or not. The reason why I mentioned the other servers based on the DMCA was to give people the full picture of what happened as MapleRoyals wasn't the only one, but I can see why you deem it unnecessary which is fine. Either way, thank you for clarifying my errors.
As I was fearing for this thread to be taken down, I didn't make it as big as I was planning to, I left minor parts out. So I will correct and broaden the thread to where people can get a more clear and realistic view of Royals success. I'm asking for everyone who has an idea to give me concrete ideas with the elaboration that influenced Royals success.
Don't forget that when the server had huge lags spikes/disconnections/hackers everywhere, they never gave up. Even if the portals made you teleport from Zakum to Carnival PQ, they did everything to make it work, and that's what makes Royals successful from my point of view.
