Today I talked about KMS and told people that Maplestory is made by Koreans and a Korean company. But not many people seem to believe it. Someone said I am lying. Lol. Maplestory used to be one of the most popular games in Korea and I can say at least 70% of all new generation (1990~2000) boys have played Maple. What about in your country? Was it popular among the people? Or was it just a game that only few people enjoyed? As a Korean myself, I can't really imagain Europeans/Africans play Maplestory because I had been thinking it is popular only in Korea. Am I wrong? Did many Europeans and Africans play Maplestory? I've been to America and Americans don't really play Maple..

I notice my fellow Americans on Reddit talking about it in the past tense only. I'd be curious how popular it is now. I feel like everything from Japan and South Korea goes through 1-2 years of popularity here, then gets dropped for the next thing. (Except anime and K-pop, clearly.)

I think many knew about it, but didn't play it seriously if they did try it (North America). I've met people who remembered it as "the game where you kill mushrooms and snails" which always yields laughter

Not just 2 years. I would say it was at least 5~7 years of super popularity in Korea. Many people still play but no more elementary kids bcoz of the massive pay2win system.

I'm pretty confident to say that I'm the only person connecting from the Africa continent. Maplestory is as foreign to Africans as voodoo rituals are to Koreans.

Well, I live in Israel. So, back in the day and even in these days, Israeli people play this game quite a lot. Back in the day, children mostly ages 10 to 16 have played this game mostly, but these days people around my age play it a lot more, somewhere around age 20 to 27 or 28. There are also some who are 16 to 19 who play, but not a lot under age 16 who play. Yes, it's quite popular here, especially the pre-BB servers. Not a lot of people in my country play the official servers, because of the large amount of boring content added and too many bad changes. On Royals, specifically, I've met quite a lot of Israeli's like me! So yeah, the answer is definitely yes, its quite popula here and doesn't seem to be losing popularity either. If you'd like to be specific, and ask about which Israeli cities specifically play it the most - I would say the cities in and around Tel Aviv mostly, especially the metropolian area. Here, its called Gush Dan. So, mostly players from Holon, Petah Tikva, Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan. Not many from Haifa, Jerusalem, Beer Sheva etc. Personally, I was always one of the few players who live near Jerusalem who play this game. It's quite rare to see Israeli's from there.

Yeah, I met a lot of Israelis in GMS, I was about to write about it haha. That's very interesting tho, why Israel? haha, and also, same here in Korea, it used to be a childish game that only 8~15 year old boys play, now it is a game that 25~40 year old fellas play. Usually spend $100~50000 on Nexon. Now it has a very huge gap between funded and non funded players. That made me return to an old Maplestory which is this.

Yeah since Maple doesn't require a fast internet speed, pretty much anyone in anywhere can enjoy with no problems. The only problem in Africa and Oceania is that they have very high pings that it makes kinda impossible to play some games that require a fast internet speed, like PUBG thingies. Keep up your good work man.

Well, the culture here likes games like Maple Story and that's probably why a lot of Israeli's like me still like this game. In fact, a lot of Israeli players have quitted and moved on to other things in life, and don't want to play video games at this age. Some people still laugh at me for playing this game when I'm 26, which is indeed a bit weird to play this game at this age, but I don't care what others think, really. If I like it, then I like it. People's negative thoughts on this shouldn't matter to me, you just enjoy what you enjoy. Specifically Israeli's, are literate people with good English and good social skills, too. The Israeli's who are younger can be very silly and immature. The ones who played in the past know this game very well. But, regarding the reason why there are more Israeli's from Tel Aviv and the central area, than Jerusalem, Beer Sheva, Haifa, etc. - I really don't know. It's difficult to explain this matter. Being from a town near Jerusalem myself, I have not yet even encountered any players from Jerusalem, but only those from Tel aviv and the surrounding cities. If they were from my city/area I would probably meet them up in real life at some point, if we became friends. Sometimes you can do that with people you get along with.

MapleSEA was such a hit in my place that two of my teachers were high level bishops back then.

Coming from the USA, no one really talked about Maple when it was at it's peak. It was just a game no one talked about it, but everyone seemed to play. It wasn't until about 4 or so years ago that people I had been friends with for years, talked about how they had played Maplestory. Surprisingly I found out there was a lot of people who played it in the past. I'm not sure if Maple was taken seriously enough, or people felt off about talking about how they played a cartoony, 2D, side scrolling, adventure game and felt like it could possibly be embarrassing since on the surface it seemed childish. Nonetheless I still played Maple since 2005 and continue to play today (albeit only private servers).

I know this issue of being unable to talk about the game with others. Because of the game's 2d anime-style graphics, that's probably what makes it appear childish to people who don't know the game good enough. But, the problem is there are people who refuse to listen, understand things before concluding that the game is childish or meant for children, etc. But like I stated before, in the end you just play what you play and enjoy what you enjoy, you don't let other people's thoughts affect your decisions and the things you enjoy, etc. Let them think you're a childish 10 year old who have failed to become a mature person, etc. They can think whatever they want! Who cares!

Oh yeah I'd also like to add, another thing. If it's someone close to you, like a relative or a boyfriend/girlfriend, etc. - and they think you're childish for playing this game, then you should go ahead and explain to them how you're not and why it's not childish. If it's someone you don't know, like a guest or a friend's friend, or just someone you don't care about - no point explaining, not worth your time. Let him/her think whatever. Because, for me, if it's someone close to me, I would care what they think about me. But if its someone that isnt close to me, I wouldn't care.

I'm sure there are thousands of americans who play maple, but around my area it was me and only a couple others who actually played it for more than a week. I still can't believe I'm still enjoying it, albeit as a private server.

We Italians have been so scarce in EuropeMS, back in the day, that we didn't even deserve our cute little language channel.
Can't say about GMS, as I've never played there, but I can't see it being any different.

We used to have our Italian Maplestory forum, that peaked at uh, like, 1000?ish members, counting one-timers and the likes, including both EMS and GMS.

yeah yeah, that's what had happened in KMS, now people who enjoyed Maple are now like 20~30 and they don't really play such games like Maple you know, and most of teens nowadays don't really get to play Maple because of the new high quality video games that have more contents and better graphics, and,,etc. Haha, but I think Maple is such a good game to retrospect my young teenage life, not really retrospect but just kinda like nostalgia! haha
