I fear that if I play MapleRoyals these days, my time will be wasted and I don't want to play Nexon's server as I guess it must be pay-to-win.
This server can be shut down in two days or two decades. Play and have fun, you don't have to invest 14 hours a day, this is a game after all. Every game can eventually be shut down.
Measures have been taken to keep the hosting anonymous that makes it hard for Nexon to find, They've tried taking down the server for years to no success. The best they've been able to do is seize a domain name and shut down a discord server and both have been pivoted to new resources. As long as Matt & Tim are never are flying on the same plane together we've probably got MapleRoyals.
Nexon have always been trying to take down private servers (not just Royals) The ones that are still around on Gtop100 after a few months are the ones that survived Nexon copyright strikes The release of MapleStory Classic won't be related to their takedown of private server
I think there's still a tangible likelihood of takedown attempts of servers that impose risk to Nexon increasing after the release of Classic World. Apparently there was a private server that actually bothered to remake a modern client, and it worked in browsers too. Nexon took that down real quick since a private server that can work on any device is a substantial risk to a game that only works on Windows. Potential players who couldn't even play the real game could then play this private server, quantifying player share that Nexon is actively losing out on because they can't be bothered to go web-first. So likewise, I think Nexon will ramp up takedown activity as Classic World comes out, since the existing established private servers account for player share that could be playing Classic World instead. But Royals (and Legends) have survived for this long, I think they'll continue to survive just fine.
