When we discussed this, we concluded that there are hazards with each implementation, and it depends on what you want to achieve with the Item Guard.

If you want to lock your item for X number of days, perhaps to prevent a risk of dropping or selling, then that's fine. If this is the case, should there be an unlock item, as well? On the other hand, if you intend to use it to safeguard against account hacking attempts, the item can be just as well be used against you, to lock items maliciously. In this case, does it make sense for there be an unlock item?

I’m sure we know the server’s niche meta of using your main character too loot while farming very well by now. Be it in Ulu or Stoppers.

A pepega guildie of mine recently NPC-ed his 7dex 7luk auf helm (+1) while farming. Supposedly he was to put it on and leave the pilgrim hat in his inventory tab, since its un-NPCable.
    ~buyback sure.
That idiot didn’t even notice that he screwed up after the next day. Hilarious yes, but it does happen.
Murphy’s law: a supposed law of nature, expressed in various humorous popular sayings, to the effect that anything that can go wrong - will go wrong.

There was a time that I accidentally NPC-ed my pants too. I know how painful it feels.
We’ve seen several cases such as the Perf Revolver in happyvile memes as well. What can i say, shit does happen :adminban:

Theres a Picklock NPC at kerning that one can pay to get their items unlocked. Possibly a 3K NX for a perma lock, and to unlock you have to pay that NPC, simply thats it. Obviously you gotta pay a premium for it. Good meso sink.

Thought of proposing using PIC/PIN to unlock the item in case the player wants to trade away the item, but in the situation where the hacker has breached into the account, the hacker probably have the PIC/PIN as well

So I take it you are in the camp of using locks as a utility (preventing accidental loss of precious equips). I have to agree with this, if we can only have it one way or the other (See Joong's post).

Yes, there was a huge account security debacle a couple of months ago, but I think we have to realize that account security, for the most part, is completely up to the player. We have the ability to set a secure, unique password, pin, and pic. How many methods of account security must be implemented before people follow the essentials of account security (please, don't misunderstand this as victim blaming.)

On the other hand, I can also see it from a security point of view. There are two cases if you get hacked:
    1. Your precious items are locked, and there is no way to unlock them. You are safe, you report the incident, and your items are kept.
    2. Your items are unlocked, and a hacker decides to grief you by locking your items.
Case 1 is pretty straightforward. In Case 2, we can assume the hacker is going to take all your valuables anyway. You can report the incident and get locks removed on remaining items, if any. If the hacker just maliciously locks all your items, one can make a report. I don't think this would occur often enough to eat up staff time, but that is just my assumption. Further, if they wanted to grief you they could just drop untradeables. I don't really see too much of a problem here.

How about we have exactly two item locks to solve this, as opposed to completely sticking to the original lock implementation.
    • Rusted item lock - Locks an equipment item, preventing it from being dropped, sold, or traded. If I no longer want this, perhaps Mr. Pickall can help?
    • Golden item lock - Locks an equipment item, preventing it from being dropped, sold, or traded. Not even the Maple Goddess can unlock this.
They will both have a 30-day duration, as that to me is a nice sweet spot (I could also see 14 days). The rusted can be removed, the golden cannot. In the case the Golden item lock is abused by a hacker, a report is sufficient, and if staff is backed up 30 days is not too terrible. I cannot see malicious locking being a concern.

To be completely clear, I am suggesting there be one Rusted and one Golden, no other durations (we don't need clutter.)

Is this possible to implement? Please let me know if I haven't considered your points fully.
