Time to necro bring this mess of a thread out with some stuff! Did you know that there exists more variants of Ghetto Beanie that is unobtainable in the game file? They actually look good, my personal favorite is the White Thief Fur Hat, would love to see them in Royals someday, unless I missed that out... Did you know that there exists an earring called Slime Earring, not to be confused with the Cash Shop version? As you can see, it's basically a recolored version of the Cat's Eye Earring. Did you know that Green Raggedy Cape is a thing? That's it... Did you know that there exists a Black Bath Towel and Yellow Bath Towel?
Did you know that Indonesian used to have their own version of Maplestory, published under a company called Lytogames? The server was launched on 2 June 2014, and ceased their operation on 16 December 2015. The server was based on the patch Resistance, which is really damn late since most regional server received their Resistance update somewhere around 2011. Not much information about the server or why they went defunct, but most of the stuff was localized to Bahasa Indonesia, from item description to NPC titles to quests. Here's some screenshots of IndonesiaMS : Another interesting about IndonesiaMS is that they apparently have two exclusive chair specifically made for them, obtainable as CBT rewards, which was the Garuda Bird chair and the Monas (Monumen Nasional Jakarta) chair. There are three other regional server that many people might not know, such as : VietnamMS that started operating on 2008 and ceased operation on 2010 BrazilMS started operating on 2008 and ceased operation on 2011 ThailandMS started operating on 2005, ceased operation on 2012, then relaunched again on 2017 and ceased operation again on 2020. Pretty sad that not much is known about these regional servers as there is not much information/exclusive content that came out, but here's some interesting quick facts. Obviously, Floating Market and Golden Temple was a ThailandMS exclusive World Tour Region that was based on an actual location in Thailand, and the latter was repurposed as time-limited Theme Dungeon on other region, then repurposed again as a permanent content and is now located somewhere near Herb Town and Mu Lung. The pet Toucan actually originated from BrazilMS. There exist an exclusive BrazilMS soundtrack in the file called "Feel Good" which you can listen to right now on Maplestory Sountrack Github databse. Currently, no one knows what is it for, but some speculated that it might be the BGM for Brazil exclusive world tour location (maybe Rio De Janiero with the statue of Christ as a background?). As for VietnamMS... I have no idea what kind of stuff they hiding. Would be interesting to see Ho Chi Minh or any other Vietnamese world tour area. There could be more exclusive stuffs on those regions, and I will try to dig some archives for it and hopefully, when I found something interesting to share, I will share it to you guys.
I should point out that I don't why Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia just join MapleSEA despite the fact that those countries are in the South East Asia region, and the fact that MapleSEA is only accessible to Singapore, Malaysia and later, the Philippines. ThailandMS was published by Nexon themselves, IndonesiaMS as mentioned above, was published by LytoGames. Oddly enough, Asiasoft published both MapleSEA and VietnamMS, so I guess it's just unlucky on Vietnam's part.
Did you know that Japanese player had a different tutorial for both Dual Blade and Evan in JMS? You can watch them here :
Gonna try to shove some Maplestory stuff that most people rarely talked about here. Also, keep in mind that some of the fact stated here might not be factually correct and information about them is surprisingly scarce, but I do hope that you guys will enjoy what I wanted to share with you all~ Did you know that MaplestorySEA had an exclusive event called Enchanted Forest? Here's the patch note link if you interested in checking out, because apparently no one recorded a video about it at all... http://www.maplesea.com/updates/view/the_enchanted_forest_patch_notes1/ Did you know that Japanese Maplestory used to have different Login music that changes monthly? Nanaironosekai by CHATA x Oster Project Hajimarino Story by Haruka Shimotsuki Sakura Pop by JIMANG Divinity by eufonius Memories of Maplestory by Mikuni Shimokawa There was another song on JMS data but I'm not sure if it was ever used or not, and the song in question is Morning Shot by FUNKY MONKEY BABIES. I wasn't able to find anything regarding this but, apparently JMS (or JMST, which stands for Test Server) also had their own version of Boss Rush but instead of normal boss area like the ones we have in Dojo/GMS Boss Rush, it strangely features World Tour area monster and bosses instead. Apparently, only JMS had received this special party quest called Pink Bean's Cake Quest where you need to team up with 2 to 3 people and work your way up until you get to fight Pink Bean that grows bigger every time you killed it. I do know that our neighbor over there had this party quest as their anniversary events, but I do wonder if we will get it for anniversary event this year on Royals? Big thanks for tanchan4 and ReiwaMagi for the footage by the way, it's hard to find new old stuff about Maplestory, really so I guess you can say I'm just scrapping the bottom of the barrel here (there's just not much of the "cat statue in Henesys Park blinks" kind if stuff, to be honest) Anyway, I will try to dig out some stuff soon, like the exclusive JMS Pachinko NX equip or something simillar someday.
A small detail of the game I always thought was interesting is how the background music for Orbis Tower ('Come With Me') and the Upper Clocktower ('Wherever You Are') share a beat sample: In this track it plays continually as the song's percussion, and plays isolated in the first 14 seconds Here, I believe it starts playing as soon as the percussion kicks in, but is accompanied by additional clock ticking. It plays isolated at 1:51 What I find interesting is that, to my knowledge (I'm not very well-versed in post-BB lore), the Ludibrium Clocktower and Orbis Tower aren't related to one another at all. Why would they share a (partial) leitmotif like this? Furthermore, the beat being arranged with the ticking and clicks of clocks obviously makes a lot of sense for the Clocktower, but in what way is Orbis Tower related to a theme of time or timekeeping? Even more beyond that, the only thing Ludibrium and Orbis have in common in regards to themes and aesthetics is that both are constructed on very high towers, but the theme for Eos/Helios Tower ('Funny Time Maker') features nothing in terms of clock or ticking samples (despite Eos Tower being home to Alishar and Helios Tower having an actual time machine). If Nexon has since established some sort of connection between Orbis and the Clock Tower in post-BB content, please let me know.
citizenlenny whispered me in game when we were doing Anniversary PQ, telling me about the Grandma Tree sprite in Spriter Resource before falling down to the ground, and he was correct about the mob is part of Korean Folk Town. To be exact, it was used in a party quest for lovers called the Lover's Party Quest, originated and only exclusive to both ChinaMS and TaiwanMS. Most of this part will be lifted directly from StrategyWiki, so here you go : " Much like Papulatus, this is a series of quests culminating in a boss fight. It is available to all players, but only if in a party of 2 with a character of the opposite gender. The first step is to talk to Xiao Di, in Korean Folk Town. She's located in between the Well and the Helios entrance. She gives the quest only if in a party of two with a character of the opposite sex. The first task in her series is to collect 50 Pink Teddy Omok pieces. The next Quest needs the pair to gather 50 Sea Horse Horns. The third quest is to get 50 Star Pixie's Starpieces. Lastly, get 20 Fierry tentacles. The reward for all that is a safety charm. She then asks a series of questions about a famous Chinese poem. Provided these are all answered correctly, the pair can move on. For completing this part, each person gets a special Pendant that adds 20 Defense and Magic defense and has 5 slots. Finally, it's the PQ part. The male and female companions have to party to enter the map. Xiao Di will then send them to the Boss room. The boss has a lot of defense, but a very low knockback. It does a fair amount of damage, so archers and assassins may want to consider bringing a Dragon Knight for Hyper Body. The object is to kill the Grandma Tree, and get a ghost spirit it drops. The boss respawns every 10 minutes, and once in the special event map, players can change channels. This quest is also repeatable. At last, the pair get the final prize, 100% Shield ATT scrolls. " Yeah... it's just that, nothing really interesting other than this is the only known description and screenshot of the Lover's Party Quest. This is such a boring fact, let's be honest.
Discovered something neat today while maging: Apparently quest items don't only drop when a specific quest is active, they apparently drop at all times but are made invisible for all users by default! I was previously aware that quest items are only visible to whoever has the specific quest that requires the item active, but I also thought they were never loaded unless a player with said quest active kills the related mobs (or anybody in their party). This knowledge will certainly come in handy for whenever I'll be helping somebody, for instance, get the rare ects for the Neo-Tokyo questline, knowing that you don't even need to share a party for the possibility of said ects to drop at any time.
Here's an evolution of Maplestory log in UI by the years~ KMS/JMS Beta GMS Beta/Pre-Big Bang First redesign on KMST (2010) MapleSEA/CMS/TMS exclusive (after Big Bang) Second redesign, just different background Third redesign, which is the current one Which one is your favorite here?
Here's something that I am not really sure about, but I feel like it's worth sharing anyway. I was digging through the game files and I stumbled upon these tiles that I think, was never used in the game before. Those two tiles are named "coalMine" and "dirtMine", respectively. As you can see, they do look different from most tiles in Maplestory, and here's how they look like on a custom map I made. As for what it is for, I legit have no idea. It looks like Perion tileset in a way, but that's just a guess. Let me know what you think of this or if you know what the tiles are for, do let me know!
I've talked about censorship in Maplestory once, where CMS, TMS and GMS had to change the appearance Yakuza in Showa Town (which I covered in this thread, give it a read too!) to be less violent and more cartoony for whatever reason it is, and today, I've discovered that in CMS, all of the skeletal enemies in Maplestory are censored due to new laws in China forbids the depiction of dead bodies, blood and mahjong in video games. Anyway, here's how they handled the censorship, let me know what you think about it! Skeledog -> Plasterdog Mummydog Skeleton Soldier -> Plaster Soldier Skeleton Officer -> Plaster Officer Skeleton Commander -> Plaster Commander Lord Skeleton -> Lord Plaster Riche Skelegon -> Plastergon Skelesaurus -> Plastersaurus Corrupted Skelegon -> Corrupted Plastergon Dark Demon Swordsman (the skeleton was removed) Dark Demon Axeman (the skeleton was removed) Dark Demon Shieldbearer (the skeleton was removed) Dark Demon Wolfrider (the skeleton was removed) Ergoth
Did you know that Omok and Memory Card minigame still uses the Beta UI? Speaking about Beta UI, did you know that they actually made a tournament roster board but never got around to use or implement the idea at all? Here's a mock up of what would the tournament roster UI would look like. Somewhere on the later patches, they decided to redesign the UI for both Omok and Memory Card for good. Here's how they look like.
Those plaster skeletons look rad as fuck, actually Were Coolie Zombie and Miner Zombie left unaffected? I wonder as you mention the law not allowing the depicting of 'dead bodies' and zombies are typically pretty dead.
Can't really find anything about the zombies, but I do know that they have jiangshis as a monster you can fight, which is technically a zombie too, so I assume they are left untouched. Anyway, to add on, it's a well known fact that anything that comes out from CMS is bound to be buggy as hell.
Video game censorship laws in China are very interesting--technically skeletons were never specifically prohibited but given the extremely strict yet vague censorship laws that did exist, many major MMORPGs (such as WoW) began to proactively censor themselves and other developers chose to follow their lead rather than take the risk. There are also conjectures that this self-censorship was to appeal to the Western perception of Chinese cultural fear of skeletons, but I personally doubt millennials who play video games would be particularly affected by such superstitions. New censorship laws were passed a year or two ago, and these prohibitions on depictions of "dead bodies" refer more specifically to corpses (and literally "pools of blood"). So cartoonish zombies are presumably safe from these new restrictions, especially considering that undead monsters like the jiangshi have always been very popular with MMORPGs.
I got my hands on an IndonesiaMS files from an archives on forums, and to be honest, I am quite disappointed that I didn't find anything much, but a discovery is still a discovery nevertheless, so do enjoy what I've discovered for now! I also got JapanMS, BrazilMS and ThailandMS files too, so do keep an eye out on this thread if you are interested~ The only exclusive equipment I discovered on the game file is a hat called Peci (or also known as songkok), a cap that is widely used on the ASEAN region, most commonly among the Muslim men and an Indonesian Flag Balloon cap. No Beta bandana or whatsoever like MSEA and EMS used to hand out to players who joined during Beta testing. As I mentioned before, IndonesiaMS has two exclusive chair which is the Mini Monas chair and the Garuda chair, and here's the preview~ I can't really find any information on this NPC, so I'll assume that it's an exclusive for IndoMS and his name is Gondrong. Apparently, he is the owner for the Dingdong Central, and I assume it's a minigame room judging from the Pachinko slot machine and the Maple One card game (which is just literally UNO) where you can play with your friends or randoms after long day Mapling~ Other than that, there is really nothing much for me to look for in IndoMS files, so I will slip some extra random Maplestory information that you might not know about- Did you know there exists two special map for Spinel? Here's what's inside the inaccessible area on Ellin Forest's Conference Room. What purpose it may serve was unknown, but other private server repurpose the room as a jail room for naughty players. There exist a Coca-Cola variant of Coconut Harvest GM event, with Coke Play cap as the coconut this time. There exists a medal that was dedicated to 46 sailors that was tragically involved in the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan, where a group of an international team of experts from South Korea, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Sweden concluded that Cheonan was sunk by a torpedo launched by the North Korean Yeono-class mini submarine, which causes the Cheonan to break in two.
Here's more digging on BrazilMS... BrazilMS exclusive bandana, Brasil Bandana. A wig of the Brazilian folklore tale, the Curupira, a dwarf like creature with bright red/orange hair and backward feet. Crown of Dom Pedro I, the founder and the first ruler of Brazil. I can't find these hats on GMS, but these hats appears to be the free hat that is given to you when you job advance (judging from the name, which is chapéu do -class- iniciante). Some Brazilian themed hat. I think that's all for BrazilMS items? Can't find anything more so... Here's some digging on TaiwanMS/ThaiMS stuff. I personally do not know if these items are exclusive to TMS/THMS or whatsoever, but I am pretty sure that I've never seen them at all before. A matchstick weapon? I have no idea what is it actually... Never saw these weapons before, so I am not sure about it. I forgot the name of this thing but I do know that it is Asiasoft mascot. A Balrog hat, which is also available on JMS as a Pachinko reward. Other region probably has this, but I think it looks cool. A hat for Loi Krathong, there's three variants of it but its mostly recolors. Father's Day Hat! More bandana, this one is called Regular Bandana, and there is a red/black stripe and black/white stripe variant too. Father's Day Cape! Never seen this ice cream before, and I don't know what flavor it is. A Taipei 101 effect. To be honest, this is a mess of a thread but I hope you enjoy seeing cash items and equips you probably never seen before orz
Here's some JMS exclusive stuff I suppose? Did you know that JMS back then had a different version of Crimsonwood Mountain than the ones we have in GMS? Instead of going to New Leaf City, you need to go to a cave in Aqua Road to go to Crimsonwood Mountain. There's not much of a difference between these versions, other than the route to Crimsonwood Keep was streamlined and easier in JMS. EXTRA FACT : The cave background was supposed to be a static image, somehow this was bugged in GMS (the background is blinking wildly for a reason) and the JMS version actually fixed this. Time to check out some weapons and equips! Starting with this lantern and this toy thing. I don't know if GMS had a different variants of Stormshear, but I think they are cool looking weapons. Some anime crossovers stuff. A baseball jersey I think? A clear overall? K-ON! related chairs. Baseball related chair? A firework chair, possibly a pair chair A pachinko mount Some weird gacha ticket thing? Bunch of foods and drinks FMA couple ring, of all things More couple rings
That Brazilian thief hat rules, please add it in! Also this Absolutely amazing, brb bumping my monthly Omok server tourney thread
