A Thread of Mostly Random Maplestory Stuff

Yup, this area is used for a questline on finding the truth about the missing alchemist in Magatia, you really should give it a try if you have the time, the quest can be a bit long and requires bits of backtracking and what not, but if it satisfies your mystery hunting feeling, I'd say go for it!

 

Some items had a different purpose during the beta release of Maplestory, but was changed later on during the game's life cycle. Also, translation might not be correct since I'm using a translator for this, so yeah-


피닉스의 깃털
(Phoenix Feather)
Consumable
전설의 새, 피닉스의 깃털이다. 전투불능 상태가 된 캐릭터를 되살릴 수 있다.
(It is the feather of the legendary bird, Phoenix. You can revive a character who has become incapacitated.)

This item was later changed to what we know as the Flaming Feather, used for Manji's Old Gladius questline and the revive ability was given to the Wheel of Fortune item instead.


독수리의 눈
(Eagle's Eye)
Consumable
독수리의 눈을 마법 재료로 만든 것이다. 적 하나의 HP, MP 양을 보여준다.
(The eagle's eyes were made of magic material. Shows the amount of HP and MP of one enemy.)

This item was later changed to what some might know as the Evil Eye Eyeball, used for How to Avoid the Stink questline where you can craft an item called Wild Eye's Gas Mask for the Astaroth questline and the ability to show an enemy's HP/MP was changed as a game feature instead of consumable effect.


성수
(Holy Water)
Consumable
성스러운 힘이 담겨있는 신성한 물이다. 언데드 몬스터의 현재 HP를 반으로 줄인다.
(It is sacred water that contains divine power. Reduces the current HP of undead monsters by half.)

It is still known as the Holy Water as the name never changed, but it recovers you from state of cursed and sealed now instead of actually being used against evil spirits and undead alike.

This appears to be the early version of omok pieces before they got replaced with newer omok pieces that we all recognize today.

(In the chat window, if you write a word that includes 'Wow', the character will make a vomit expression.)

One of the earlier facial expression to be added to the game, it's in this list because of the icon used for the item.

This is an odd item, it's just a ring, doesn't change your nametag, your bubble chat or anything, it's just a plain shiny ring.

I'm sure some of you know about this, but there's a bunch of stamps depicting a Snail, Blue Snail, Stump and Slime in the game files. No idea what are they for though...

Same goes with these fun looking 테트리스 조각 (Tetris pieces), definitely used for a Tetris minigame that never made it into the game (probably due to copyright reasons).

As with any other videogames out there, Maplestory also has plenty of real-life figures and celebrities being referenced as NPC in game!

Starting with the World Tour area of Ximending, Taiwan, we have :

Aaron Quack, based on Wang Leehom, an American singer-songwriter, actor, producer and film director

Coco Dee, based on Jolin Tsai, a Taiwanese singer, songwriter, actress, considered as one of the most influential figures in Chinese popular culture

Sammi Fab, based on Stefanie Sun, a Singaporean singer and songwriter

Wang Jianmin, based on Chien-Ming Wang, a Taiwanese former professional baseball pitcher, where he played in MLB for New York Yankees, Washington Nationals, Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals

Wang Xingling, based on Cindy Wang, a Taiwanese singer and actress

Jay Chewy, based on Jay Chou, a Taiwanese singer, songwriter, record producer, rapper, actor and television personality. The Toyota AE86 is a reference of Jay's role and his acting debut in the live action movie adaptation of Initial D, where he played the role of Takumi Fujiwara

Agent Marco and Agent Falcon, based on Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones who appeared in Men in Black as Agent J and Agent K

Cake Boss Daniel, based on Gordon Ramsay, world renowned British chef, restaurateur, television personality and writer

Gourdon Ritzy, also known as Gordon Romsay Freeman in MSEA that appeared during Absolute Taste event is also based on Gordon Ramsay, and could be referencing Gordon Freeman from Half Life series for the MSEA version

Donald, based on Donald Trump, an American businessman, media personality and former United States president appeared in Maplestory as a replacement for Duey before being removed from the game recently

There's probably still more real life figure references as NPC in Maplestory, but here's the one that I can think of so far so feel free to add more!​

 

@nut brought this thing up to me, but did you guys know Zakum arm has a hit animation just like Horntail heads? This one is probably a bit less known than the Horntail ones, but it's interesting nevertheless!

I tried my best aligning the arms, but here's what they look like! The more you know, huh?​
