I don't see the need to swear or insult in Smegas (You don't go around screaming and swearing IRL to everything and everyone I think?). If you get "insulted" by someone, or you just don't like the way he/she acts, instead of insulting them try and be the better man(/woman) and ignore it. It's a game, people play to have fun, not to pick fights (although there have been a few people who's only goal is pissing people off). I get why you feel attacked when someone insults you but are you really gonna lower yourself to that person's level? I'm sure everyone's aware of the recent 'reporting other players' 'drama', if you think about it, is it really worth your time to take 5 or 10 minutes to report someone you don't even know? Please try and be a little bit more mature about it. It's normal that not everyone shares your ideas/views on things, but there's no need to start fighting over it. I know this thread is mainly about the language/swearing issues. But GMs don't ban for language or swearing like Matt mentioned earlier. There's been some confusion about this before and there have been misunderstandings. But in the end the only thing GMs try to do is keep racism/inappropriate language/insulting and hurting other people's feelings out of the general community. I hope everyone understands that there's a difference between the use of swear words in a general sense and actually aiming them at another person. I understand that some of you might be pissed because of a temp ban you had earlier. Maybe you deserved it, maybe you didn't. I trust in the other GMs judgement on this matter and I don't think anyone would (temp) ban anyone for an unfair reason. I hope some of you share my point of view and I hope there will be less drama and less reason to ban people for profanity in the future.
It amuses me how staff and fellow members are acting so righteous and respectful towards rules when we're all breaking laws and legal rules by playing a private server. Just as hackers and cheaters are also breaking legal rules because it tampers with the code of the client/server. Swearing doesn't. If a random person calls you a "Fucking f*ggot" in public, do you call the cops? No. You either yell back, or continue on with your day. Even if they continue on with their vulgar language. Getting the GM involved in such petty things is the same. I've dealt with my share of rude obnoxious pricks on the server; do you see me reporting anyone other than Tere; whom I only reported to prove a point when he was being rude. Surprise, he didn't get banned. I think it doesn't come down to breaking rules, what it comes down to is what mood the GM who gets the report is in, and if the insult hits close to home; or if they're taking it out of context. Anywho, just as I have my opinion of how silly it is to ban for language on an already illegal game. Everyone else has their opinion on how righteous we're all being in denying people freedom of speech. Hate crimes are crimes. Telling someone they're a "Fucking Loser" isn't. To each their own though.
As far as I'm concerned, it's not so much about rules per se, it's about having a bit of respect and consideration for other people. Swapping playful insults with your mates is one thing, but going round insulting other people doesn't make for a friendly community. If nobody showed any self-control and we all told other people exactly what we thought of them, often in the heat of the moment, there'd be a LOT of ill-feeling and un-necessary drama. This is the sort of community that I really, really don't want. It would be wonderful if we didn't need rules, but sometimes they're the best or even the only way to prevent things from getting (further) out of hand. They're there for the benefit of the community as a whole.
But this is not the outdoors. This is a game with rules that people agreed to when they registered. The main reason for having these rules in question are because there are users ranging from 13 to about 45 years of age, and from a wide range of backgrounds and ethnicity's. You can't see the person you are speaking to, you don't know what race they are, you don't know what kind of mood they are in and stuff like that. So I don't think you can really compare real life legislations to the rules of a game.
And I completely agree, but at the same time; because of that very reason, the rules shouldn't be as harsh. You really need to consider adding a warning system for minor offences as opposed to a 3 day ban. Since I don't know anything about a person; then does that mean I have to censor myself unless they tell me about their real life? The beauty about the online community is just that. It's online and you can be whoever you want. Someone might find a sexist joke overly offensive, whereas someone else will laugh at it. Then there's others who just don't care. Do you want me to pry out everyone's personal information before I make any statements? By your logic I need to assume that each person I speak with is: black, white, brown, hispanic, mexican, male, female, religious, atheist, non-religious, middle eastern, asian, etc. whenever I say anything; and need to be worried that quite literally anything I say can get me banned without warning or any kind of resolution. There has to be a deeper more thought-out system. Not just: Ban 3 days, month, perma. I'm also not a person who pries into people's personal lives since you need to respect boundaries; ergo in respecting people, that means I have to quite literally censor EVERY word I say in case it could be taken out of context in any shape or form simply based on your rules of "You get banned. No warnings; just banned."
I would be very interested to know what a 13 year old is doing on a v62 server.. or a private server in general.. They would have been like 7 or 8 years old when v62 was out in GMS?
I do agree it's lame for people to take advantage of this rule as most reports are done against people the reporter dislikes, not because they are offended. I can see someone swearing if they have a reason to be angry, but nothing in this game is anything to be that serious about. Besides, I'm pretty sure people don't swear that often in real life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1mnGkp34w4
That video actually sounds exactly like my mates, my workplace, everyone down here... in fact this is probably closer to what my everyday conversations sound like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMvtzpigvo4 everyone needs to eat a cup of concrete, and harden the f up
To be honest, what i'm worried about is the ban, where someone got banned instantly for 3 days after saying "hey fe@g" in kerning. I know that *** is a bad word, but all motives were to be friendly. (believe it or not) I think the person banned should of got a warning, or the person offended should of said "please stop" and only should of reported him, after he kept on offending her AFTER THE INITIAL "please stop". If you are offended by something please ask them to STOP before insta reporting -> 3 day ban. Source: http://royals.ms/forum/showthread.php?t=1575 For example, Dave and I call each other bad words all the time, but it is meant to be a friendly way of exchanging words. Exactly how Thom calls Chris "smelly". I know sometimes people aren't used to these gestures or might find some of these words offensive, so please just ask them to stop before reporting.
I rolled in the FM today and all these popular 4th job heroes are dropping F bombs and all of that . But I bring up a " DRAKE THE TYPE OF ****A " MEME FROM FACEBOOK and I'm suspended.... While the higher ups and popular heads get to say it ..
See. There is swearing and there is racial slurs. Racial slurs = Insta-banned General swearing = Don't smega it, and don't swear at people. Or you're asking to get banned We also don't have a warning system. So. With that in mind. Don't use any sort of racial slur ever, and don't name call. Pretty much. You can even get ban for being offensive without general swearing words. So basically, if you are just a good person... You really won't have a problem. If for some reason you have an actual problem with a person. Blacklist them. Or I'm sure there are a multitude of other steps you can take. *Shrugs* Like SS'ing the issue and reporting them, but as a community we don't really like when people get banned for this kind of issue. We have people like Antti as a classic example of what we consider a snitch. (= With that said. The server has been down for like a long time because of emergency shizz. So you aren't missing out. I just hope the time you're away helps you get into the right mindset. Matt wants a generally good, and friendly community. Hope you'll add to it.
I have only read a few posts in this thread, so blame me if this was already said. Smegas are easy to get, making the chance of showing everyone how "cool" you are very easy. I'm not saying you should lower the drop rate. Maple has always been like this and will always be like this. If you can't handle a little internet gangster, then just black list them.
Agreed. --guys this is the internet, the very home of the trolls, keyboard warriors, etc. swearing is 50% of the vocabulary here. in my opinion, you simply cannot fix this problem, unless you want a bunch of pissed off people. i see people insult each other on a daily basis on this server, and im sure 70% of it is meant in a good way, you know? this server consists of people who are 17+ mainly, can we seriously not handle a swearing problem?
If you the owner doesn't like vulgar language why didn't he add a censorship before starting making the server? Its like being a cop , and giving someone meth and then busting him for possesion -_- straight feels like a set up .. haha
