Are you receiving this error message?:

After several hours of frustration turning on and off my firewall and antivirus software, adding exceptions, and reinstalling MapleRoyals multiple times, I finally found the solution. I was connecting from outside the service region. Bonjour from Réunion Island, France!

This is not a comprehensive guide for this error message, but I could not find this information anywhere on the forum, so I'm posting it for posterity's sake. I would also like to report it as a potential bug. According to this Wikia page [http://nexoncommunitytech.wikia.com/wiki/Server_check,_a_firewall_block,_or_other_network_issues], it is a known issue that you cannot connect to GMS from Europe (or my little island) in vanilla MapleStory. Nexon wants you to use the appropriate server for each region. For this to be true in MapleRoyals seems nonsensical. It's probably a matter of being hard-built into the code.

The solution is to use a VPN and connecting through the United States. Basically, you're tricking the MapleRoyals servers into believing that you are connecting from the United States. I've used Private Internet Access before, so I defaulted to that. But I suppose its servers are limited in some way, because it failed to connect from my strange location. After Googling around for other forum posts, I was suggested this free VPN, Hotspot Shield: [https://www.hotspotshield.com/], and it worked. After playing for just a few minutes, I can say that the lag is of an acceptable quality, though your mileage may vary. Different VPNs will behave differently, so if one does not work for you, you can always try others.

    Hope it helps!

Using a free VPN service is a very bad idea, because that is what hackers do. And it's very easy for you to get caught up in a ban along with the IP used by hackers on these free services.

I learned a few hours after posting this that Hotspot Shield is not actually free for life, just free to try. It may not be a long term solution, but for the purpose of diagnosing whether your region is what is causing the error (as opposed to a firewall/antivirus setting), I'd say it still has its purpose.
