Literally one of my fav items ever, I've had it and was never willing to sell it because it was gold and perfect.

Downgraded to basic blue trash now.

So I was really happy about these self-scrolled warrior pants:
    goodpants.png

Clean, they were perfect STR, and 1 wdef from perfect, and 1 accuracy from perfect. Almost completely perfect pants in all 3 stats (male warrior pants can't have DEX and STR, only one or the other). I then passed 6 out of 7 60% to make them 9/12/14 and yellow. Now?

    failpants.png

    Right...

And voting is down to almost 60% positive. I will keep advocating for this to be reverted (or made optional).

I'd like to point out that the votes on implementation were 104-43 and now are 109-74.

On one hand, it's cool to give weapon attack extra weighting on cgs so high attack gear can be reliably purple/yellow tagged.
On the other hand, every other aspect of this change is unnecessary and serves no real purpose other than to upset people.

Why don't acc/speed/jump count at all when those are stats people actually care about? Are the new tags balanced assuming you have 3 pets and an infinite supply of maple pops? Are they balanced for lv200s with auf helms?
Why were islanders completely disregarded for this change when they were brought up in the first page of this thread?
Why are shields so easy to yellow tag now? My yellow sword turned purple, my purple shield turned yellow, for what purpose?
Why does weapon attack count so much for for a wand/staff? If you're glancing at an inventory full of gacha elewands, the new tags are still useless for determining their value. You still need to check them individually.
And if you're making a rational stats-oriented purchase from fm, you don't need the item color to tell you what to buy. You're going to check the stats regardless.
The old system was flawed and the new system is flawed in different ways. The old system isn't just pre-bb nostalgia, it's how Royals itself worked for over 10 years. Many items exist on this server that were scrolled with the specific intention of hitting a certain tag color.

If the staff are committed to this, I agree it should be given an optional toggle.

This patch's sole purpose is not to "upset" those who spend time creating items that are yellow/purple tagged.

It is to give more straightforward visual clarity on items valuable to most of the player base,

which is the original reason for the system being added in Maplestory in the first place.

If you think about it, the reason why these purple/yellow items are more easily obtainable in royals is because

Royal's godly system allows for much higher average stats for most items.

Many of the items, even with the same scroll applied, would have a much more difficult time achieving the same color had it not been for

The additional stats were added from the system.

At the same time, many of the items that would typically be worthless to the core player base gain these colors designed to

indicate that the item at hand is something of value, causing disparity between the value of an item and its visual.

(I will not consider "value" outside of actual gameplay purpose, as such value is highly subjective)

If the game's inherent item-stat mechanism was modified, isn't it an obvious decision to modify the visual system for

    indicating item-stat/rarity?

I can see this system helping players not get baited over and over again in situations where they loot an item expect a godly item

from the visual queue, only to be disappointed by the actual stats of an item.

The change/implementation wasn't perfect, but I believe the inherent direction is correct.

I think it's BS that a +40 stat above avg 16 ATT sock (end-game or approaching it at worst for 99% of players) that was previously GOLDEN can go PURPLE after the update.

Any admin/players want to justify this to others? ~f18 +5.7 stat avg per CS x 7 (+15 att too) and we got nerfed bro

As others have said, item color for shoes and pants were drastically changed where they no longer accurately represent the magnitude of the stats of the item.

10/7 clean blue shoe going to 10/16 2 slots went from being yellow to still only blue...
7 str clean blue pants going to 7/12 3 slots went from being purple to still only blue...

You're kind of assuming the only reason why Nexon designed the item color system is simply to indicate how "strong" the item is.
But how do you convince everyone it's not originally/internally intended to provide a mixing of purposes between visual amusement(meme included) and it's seemingly main goal as above said.

Since this thread started from mid 2023, it seems to me that when godly item system first came out no one cared about how it will impact item color (Idk tho, I'm not one of the old players), and now we're trying to make up for the missing part by overlapping yet another potential mistake on top of that.
If it's so necessary and desperate to have it changed I would prefer to do as little as possible,
for example to have main stats just weight slightly more than other stats:
    STR/DEX/INT/LUK/WATK/MATK = 3pts
    DEF/HP/MP/ACC/AVOID/SPEED/JUMP = 2pts

The new color system is made in a way that any other stat without affecting actual damage is now completely irrelevant.
A minor thing i've found is that this sometimes makes new item colors more misleading than old color system, even betraying what it's supposed to serve: the threshold becomes too strict for those equips with single main stat.
A clean +8 STR(-1 from max), high accuracy Black Neos Pants used to have a decent chance to get blue tagged, but now it can only be white.
Lets say if I will keep +8/+9 STR Black Neos Pants and npc all others below. And if I solely rely on item color and with old color system I'll get maybe 90% false-positive among a few blue tagged ones and 3% false-negative among the majority of white ones. With new color system all +8 belong to white, +9 belong to blue, I get 0% false-positive among 1-2 blue tagged which sounds good, but I'll lose all +8 if I don't check every single white ones.

We appreciate everyone’s input on the change so far and are very interested to keep brainstorming with you.
That being said, we hear you and understand that this change may not be what you expected it to be now that it's in game. We made this change because over 75% of votes were in favor of this idea prior to implementation and the post was up and pinned in the feedback section for months . It took the devs a trivial amount of time to implement and there were no big projects delayed for this. We also considered the effect it would have on islander equipment as pointed out by Pragmasaurus on the first page however other Islanders hadn't provided additional feedback which meant we weren't (made) aware that most of you feel the way he does on this subject. It’s very hard in general to consider alternative playstyles like intentionally staying in the tutorial area when doing game changes. To be fair the argument of working hard for an item and scrolling it and that justifying a good color tag can be used on both sides. I’m pretty sure that you agree with us that this should not only be orange for example and no it’s not my item ~f12.
    cape.png

Most issues people have seem to be related to scrolled items and by reading the posts it’s clear many people want a more trustworthy system for clean items/drops. Therefore we are also considering the old system including weapon def, magic def, HP and Mp, Jump and Speed, accuracy and avoidability for scrolled items with or without more points for weapon attack/magic attack/str/dex/int/luk and only revamping the clean item system to please both sides. Seperating the threshold for clean and scrolled items would also make it much easier for us to fine tune the numbers. Please let us know what you think about that approach!

All in all we are open for suggestions on changes or tweaks on this matter, even a revert isn't off the table so please continue to give feedback on this topic, continue voting on the initial poll and get your friends involved to give us an accurate idea of what you prefer or want to see changed.

    Hi Zancks,

    Thank you for your response.

    In relation to this post:

Whilst ignorance is not an excuse, many currently active islanders were not aware of these changes. I began islanding in June of 2023 and it was still very new to me in July, when this was posted. I certainly would have voiced my opinion on this sooner, had I been aware of its existence. I'd like to offer my sincerest apologies for not responding to these proposals until after their implementation.

My personal issue with the change:

For me personally, it felt unreasonable to me that one can pass 5/7 10% scrolls, or even 7/7 10% scrolls, and the item is not gold. I feel it should not matter if those scrolls are for HP, WA, Dex, Def, MP, etc, it should be a gold tag. Similarly, it felt reasonable that passing 4/7 10% scrolls made the tag on an item purple.

I feel the old system for scrolled items was most inclusive. It enabled players to scroll in accordance with their own personal values, islander or not, without negative consequence. It celebrates difference: a community I can get on board with.

You want all-gold purely HP gear? You go right ahead and make it!
You want gold +5 Pink Whitebottom Boots instead of +5 Facestompers? Sure! You do you, we won't give you a lower item tag for it. We celebrate individuality here.

In relation to your most recent thoughts and suggestions:

I would agree that much of the tension is regarding scrolled items. It feels reasonable to me that clean and scrolled items could be tagged differently. I think it is a good compromise for players, to be able to NPC clean items efficiently, in accordance with their true potential market value, whilst the value of other stats when scrolled are protected. I feel it is important that the 100+ people who voted for this change are meaningfully taken into consideration, alongside those of us calling for a revert to the old system. If implemented correctly, I feel it has the potential to work very well, and hopefully mend the current rift in the community.

Questions in relation to how we proceed:

We have known average stat to be entwined with scrolled and unscrolled items up to this point. If we change the un-scrolled perimeters of average stat items, that currently changes the scrolled ones also. My largest question is, if we disconnect the two, what do you intend for that to look like? How would you plan to define the perimeters for these tags on scrolled items in a way that makes it fair, inclusive for everyone, and market friendly for the player base at large?

Once again, I'd like to thank you, for your response, your hard work, and your time.

    ~ Adaryn

One of the main reasons i dislike the guaranteed color when you hit a certain att on CGS is because i think it fuels or even enables elitism to a certain degree. This change puts a definitive standard on what the 'benchmarks' for CGS are, and i can imagine players sizing each other up asking what color are their cgs, stuff like that. Players of course have been doing this even before this change but this change gives them even more reason to do so, so yeah.

Based on all the feedback, I think honestly that Royals is missing a prime opportunity to have item color dyes for RP and make a killing.

"Make your item look purple" - 10 RP
"Make your item look blue - 3 RP

    Etc.

Won't change any stats of course xD Just the color of the item if it should be a blue or not, etc.

Pay-to-win directly conflicts with the ethos of the server. We as players work hard to create gear, and that, in my opinion, should be reflected and rewarded in-game at no additional cost.

There's no pay to win? I said keep the stats the same, it's just a cosmetic change.

It's still p2w once you combine it with the market - if people are willing to pay extra meso for gold tags you could buy an item, pay IRL $$ to gold tag, and resell for profit, turning $$ into meso. That's why all donor items are untradable.

    Hi Zancks,

For clean items, would it be possible to include the stat range of the items (maybe by toggle) when viewing the item.

For example if an item has an attack of 48 and a str of 2 a player would be able to see the full range of that items attack and str when clean (40-55) (1-7) when the feature is toggled on. This would help players get a good idea of whether the item is good or not. I don't know whether its feasible.

I really liked the old color system, but maybe this feature would allow players to understand WHY their item has the color it has and also solve the problem of not knowing whether their item is good or not. (They would see their Red Craven has 8 luk but 56 attack, and seeing that the attack range of an RC is 41-56, they would know that their craven HAS to be worth something).

Many games use this feature to allow players to know whether they have gotten something good or not!

One thing I noticed, and I'm not sure if it's been since this implementation, but certain items like the Nisrocks (100 wa) and Nescheres (103 wa), they are becoming blue when the item is average

However, I have yet to loot anything higher than above average from them in a while.
